    We all know that silicon dioxide is in giant covalent structure, and atoms are joined together by strong covalent bonds. While we silicon dioxide dissolves in concentrated sodium hydroxide,SiO2 + 2OH- --> SiO32- + H2O I would like to know the processes involved in detail and how can this be done in molecular level. Beside, it is known that C60 is a very hard material, and it is in sphere shape, I would like to know is there any bond between C60 molecules so that C60 could be observable to our naked eyes (I have not ever seen C60).

    We all know that even so called 'insoluble salt' would dissolve a bit in water forming a saturated solution. For example, PbSO4, how could we test for the sulphate ion inside? I've asked my teacher about this question, he suggested adding enough amount of lead(ll) sulphate to a certain volume of water forming a saturated solution then filter the excess solid and then test for the ions by using the solution. Now I've got two questions. As there is an equilibrium between solid lead(ll) sulphate and the soluble mobile ions, PbSO4(s) + (aq) <----> Pb2+(aq) + SO42-(aq), as the solubility of lead(ll) sulphate is quite low, 0.99g per 100 ml water, we may expect that the…

    Hi, I was doing some experiments with wax and now that I'm done I want to clean everything up. Problem is my beakers are coated with wax and its a pain to get the stuff off. I tried scraping it and heating it. I can't seem to find a way to get the beaker clean of that stuff. Anyone know a solvent that can dissolve wax? or an effecient method of cleaning up my glassware? Thanks Edit: Oh yeah, It's candle wax in case it matters.

  9. A little back story first, here in Bermuda we use our roofs to catch rainwater. We have no lakes or rivers; all of our water comes from the rain or is desalinated from brackish/marine water. In order to keep the roofs clean, they are power washed and painted every few years. To make a long story short: while painting our roof, some of the paint washed off and got into the storage tank, and now our water supply (about 17,000 gallons) is contaminated with paint. The water is now slightly cloudy and has a very slight paint smell; I also noticed a very small amount of foaming when shaken.     Hi, Why do different metals react in odd ways with different acids, example: Zn + HNO3 ---> Zn(NO3)2 + NO2 + H2O Zn + H2SO4 ==> ZnSO4 + H2 Zn + HCl ----> ZnCl2 + H2 Why does HNO3 give off NO2 gas when reacting with zinc instead of all the NO3- anions going towards making the salt? Now looking at another reaction: Cu + H2SO4 ==> CuSO4 + SO2 + H2O In this reaction Sulfur Dioxide is formed. What's the reason behind this? Again why doesnt all of the SO4 go towards making a salt?     I always drink honeyd water and noticed cold water becomes "sweeter" than warm (boiled) water with the same amount of honey applied. I thought it's because of the lime, but what exactly happens when water is boiled?

    The question simply is, which could be reduced by Cu? Sn2+ (superscript 2+) Ag+ (superscript +) Zn2+ (superscript 2+) How do i figure this out? ...by using some sort of database? I know copper will spontaneously reduce Ag+ Not sure about the other 2.

  14. can someone confirm or correct this? * Strong bases are soluble in strong acids and vice versa. * weak acids are NOT soluble in strong acids. * weak bases are NOT soluble in strong base. * weak acids CAN dissolve in weak acids * weak bases CAN dissolve in weak bases. what about weak acid in weak base? are they soluble?   16. I did a nice and quite spectacular experiment, in which red phosphorous is reacting with KIO4. A pink/purple cloud is produced and an intensely bright and hot flash. Really beautiful. I made little movies at this at 60 frames per second, and the result is quite impressive. Unfortunately, I could not capture the very moment of explosion itself (total overexposure of the camera), but both the onset and the afterglow can perfectly be captured.     Hi, I placed two silver disks in a beaker and added excess nitric acid to it, all of this was done in the balcony. I had my hot plate out there too. So i mix it and leave quickly and shut the balcony door. After the mixture heats up, a ton of NO2 gas starts evolving. After I while I started smelling it through the closed window, so I gather together two big fans, wait till the NO2 gas production has decreased, and open the balcony door. I aim the fans outside and turn them on full speed. Then i hold my breath and run out quickly (with a mask on of course) and turn off the hot plate.     Hi, I'm new to this forum and am trying to produce Fe203(RUST aka Ferric oxide) through electrolysis. I have attatched a thick copper wire to the negative(black)lead and a normal galvanized steel nail.(I think its galvanized, its the kind that is not all rough, it is smooth and kind of gold/bronze). Anyways I want to make sure im not making Acid rust, the opposite of rust. When i do this i yield a thick goopy black/grey liquid that contains only the tiniest trace of rust in it.     I was mucking around with chemicals at the weekend, and we mixed anything vaguely flammable together (stupid i know).. As far as i know, our cocktail included: Rust, Aluminium, gin, KNO3, Sulphur and Magnesium. Oh, and burnt matches. Can anyone shed any light on why it loads of ammonia was evolved?! I know that the test for nitrates uses aluminium and generates ammonia, but this requires NaOH, which i didn't add. My only other thought is that KOH from the burnt matches did it instead, but i dont know if this is possible.. Any ideas?
