I have heard of two such reagent, one is sulfuric acid, another one is iodine, both of them are claimed to have been able to stain all carbohydrates, amino acids, and fat. But I'm interested in the mechanism, or chemical reactions involved. For the sulfuric acid as a reagent, possibly, though I'm not quite sure, is due to dehydration of targets resulting in carbon formation making the spots visible. For the iodine, I know iodine could stain starch by complexing, but I can't think of a staining mechanism for other carbohydrates. For fat, maybe the iodine vapor dissolves into fat and such dissolved iodine appears purple. The amino acids again I have no idea how it w…

Hello everyone, My note says in fatty acid synthesis, one acetyl unit enters the synthesis pathway directly but the remainder must be first converted to malonyl CoA. I can understand the latter but why does one acetyl unit enter directly where did it come from? Thanks

  3. Is it because they are unsaturated and can unfold. I understand how one radical would create another radical but I don't know exactly how radical could spread in a fatty acid chain. Any diagram would be useful. Thank you

  4. I've seen 'recipes' for salt crystals, but also salt and vinegar crystals. I don't really understand what the difference is (other than one has vinegar). So, how does the lower pH of the solution affect the growth of salt crystals? And, just wondering, would lemon juice have a similar effect as vinegar? Thanks. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedAlso, can anyone tell me what a 'non-solvent' is? Is vinegar or lemon juice a non-solvent of salt? Thanks

Hi all- Sorry for asking such an elementary question... I feel like I'm getting progressively worse at chemistry as I go through the AP course. Anyway, I'm studying for the midterm (which is tomorrow), and I'm reading over some stuff about Le Châtelier's principle, specifically the effect of temperature changes. I understand it all and don't really have a problem, per se, just a bit of a curiosity. The book explains the effect of temperature changes very well in terms of endo- and exothermic reactions: "In an endothermic reaction, we can consider heat as a reactant, whereas in an exothermic reaction we can consider heat as a product." So my question is:…

Can I use any of the spectrometers offered by Vernier.com? What types should I lokk at (NIR, FT-IR, etc) Thanks, Jose

I'm kind of fed up with all of the wrong accusation that my teacher has been making in her math word problems that's supposed to be "practice". Yes, they do help us practice, but that's besides the point. In quite a few, I have found completely WRONG information, which just annoys me. I couldn't confirm this anywhere else, so maybe here might help. Does anyone know what % of carbon is in carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide? In a certain problem my teacher gave me, it says "Carbon monoxide is a gas that is 43% carbon. Carbon dioxide is only 27% carbon." Thanks!

Hello I need oleic acid for a ferrofluid display. I have a mixture of omega oils which contains omega 3, 6, and 9 oils. 9 is the oleic acid. Anyone know a method to extract the omega nine from the omega blend? Anyother methods for creating oleic acid or any other type of surfactant?

  15. ok so in a cabon zinc battery there is a graphite anode and a zinc case as the cathode. in between these two you have a mixture of carbon and Manganese dioxide. so after harvesting the cathode and anode (i use the graphite rod for electrolysis) i have a bunch of left over carbon/Manganese dioxide mixture. so i was wonder if there is a way to seperate the two? i mainly would like the Manganese dioxide so if the process ruins the carbon in the mixture i dont care. I really dont have a need for the Manganese dioxide but i figured since i have it i might as well try to extract it and save it incase i do have a use for it in the future. any help would be great! t…

Does anyone know how iron chloride, magnesium chloride, and copper chloride should be properly disposed. All three are potential products of the metals and hydrochloric acid (1M). After a bit of searching most of the information that I find is the check your state guidelines (CA), but of course I can't find any state guidelines! I'm fairly certain that all three could be disposed of in a typical drain as long as any remaining HCl is neutralized first.

  17. Hey I have searched in the internet, but I didn't find anything related to that. I found how to extract the hot substances like gingerol. But I didn't find anything for ascorbic acid. So does anyone has an idea? I want to quantify the amount of vitamin C in ginger. It is for a project work at school. Any suggestion is welcome!

My friend just decided to make homemade alcohol. He put powdered sugar, 95 degree water, and a packet of yeast in a mason jar. He poked a hole in the lid and stuffed a piece of paper towel to plug it. In a couple of days he's going to filter it twice through coffee filters and then he plans to drink it. I'm only in my freshman year of college chemistry but I'm pretty sure this will produce methanol in lethal amounts since it isn't distilled. Am I right? Thanks in advance!

I know when thinking about radioactive decay, unstable isotopes are what come to mind. But out of curiosity (and I really have no education on the matter, if you couldn't tell), would any given matter decay into pure radiation in theory, if given an extremely vast period of time?

ok so radioactive elements decay into other stable or unstable isotopes and i under stand that and how it works. but how is this affected when its in a compound? lets use tritium for example which decays into He3. so if you reacted tritium with oxygen you create Tritiated water also known as super heavy water. similar to "heavy water" that has the H2 isotope in place of regular H. so you have T20(using T for tritium or H3). so the half life of tritium is 12.32 years as it decays into He3. So as it decays does the chemical bond stay intact? leaving you with He(3)2O? with helium being a noble gas this seem like it would cause some problems with the comp…
