How come it doesn't go really low when you're asleep? I mean, you can sleep for 12 hours and so and feel fine when you wake up....if you went for 12 hours without eating when awake you'd probably pass out from hypoglycemia. How does your body keep it level?

This conversation came up in my sunday school class a few years ago and I could never answer it. So everyone around us sees "blue", or "red", or "green"... But are those colours the same for everyone? If I see 'blue' is it someone else's 'green'? And vice versa?

Hello. Application of electrical current for just a second from an electrode in a metal pot should destroy most if not all life in its water instantaneously. Why is such procedure not exploited ? At least I do not know of it being used to disinfect water Or is it ? The typical action is to boil the water; with huge amount of power used.

what would be some sources or error in a potato lab where each patoto slice (3 cm in length) is put into a test tube with different concetrations of water for example : 100 % , 99.5 % , 99 % , 98.5 % , 98 % are all concentrations of water in which a potato slice was put in and left for 24 hours in order to determine if the overall mass has gone down or increased. Someone please give some ideas on this. Thank You

How come under certain conditions like if you're hyperactive or out walking in the cold, your skin can be cold on the surface but you still feel overheated? Is it just that the blood withdraws from the skin?

how does the body create electricity? i know we use it to think, and move, but what and where creates it? biology isnt realy my subject, even though how interesting it is, i am realy interested in energy and electricity production though. and im curios how we derive electricity, though we dont have any copper or ceramic-titanium mixes in us{as far as i know} and that sparcks up another q, how does the atmosphere make electricity, or the clouds. like lightning. is it the water in the clouds and the movement adjacent to the magnetized earth? i know this isnt really biology, but i thought id ad that on and see if i can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Hey all, need some help. I'm running an experiment exposing Vicia Faba (beans) to UVA and UVB light, observing chromosome breaks, and repeating the process with sunscreen added. I need to find a way to introduce the sunscreen somewhere in between the path of the light and the plants (whether this involves application to the leaves, some sort of glass plate or other) whatever the solution entails, the following must be true: 1)The sunscreen must be uniformly administered to all plants at once (ie: no gradients in distribution, no "by hand" application, etc...) Any ideas? I've already attempted to press the sunscreen between two glass plates to spread it un…

Currently enrolled in Applied Microbiology, I'm responsible for developing a culture collection of > 10 different species. Having only a simple general microbiology background, I don't know many microbes by name. It's been suggested that we bring in samples from outside the classroom and try to isolate and culture several specimens. Fungi can be included, but bacteria should be the focus of this collection. I'm looking for any ideas so feel free to namedrop. Here are some ideas I've got so far: Fungi: Geotrichum fici -- While looking up various genera for an assignment, I discovered G. fici produces a pungent odor reminiscent of pineapple. How would I select an …

Hi everyone, I made ampicillin-LB media on Wednesday and poured it into plates on wednesday afternoon. After allowing them to set i turned the plates over and left them on my desk wednesday night, Thursday day and Thursday night:doh:. This morning (Friday) i have packed them and put them in the fridge. I was just wondering, was it a mistake to have left them a whole day at room temperature? Has my media or the ampicillin gone off over this time? Can i still use my plates or should i just make new ones? Thanks heaps for your help, Christy.

Fossils can be dated with a fairly high degree of accuracy and precision using radiometric methods. Dating of lineage divergence events using DNA sequence divergence data is more problematic, but such data consistently give lineage divergence dates that are tens of millions of years older than dates from the fossil record. How can these differences be reconciled? Thanks!

More seriously, what's the longest a single virus can exist in the host? Once a duplicate virus has been manufactured and released by a cell, does it have an expiration date, a time period in which it must reach an uninhabited cell and duplicate, before it loses its ability to be sprung into action by entering a healthy cell? Also, some medicines work by disabling the cell's borrowed manufacturing process that a virus depends on. I'd assume the medicine has a time limit, and once the cells' process are functioning again, the virus in stasis has a chance to become functional again -- unless by then it's already "dead".

I'm confused about something. Its probably a mere problem of semantics but I figured I'd ask to make sure. The following site defines Gill slit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gill_slit) as follows So gill slits are a type of gill. But at the bottom it says Those two statements taken together are confusing to me. gill slits of vertebrate embryos -Are they are or are they not gill slits? Is this an issue of semantics?

Many people accuse creationism of having no predictions, but I think it does make a few. Dismissing it as making no predictions seems like a disingenuous approach to me. However, if they want to say god made additional changes than the ones mentioned, then all bets are off. Also, I'd like to limit this discussion to the predictions made rather than the accuracy of the predictions, so that creationists can work together with everyone else to tell what their theory predicts, then we can discuss the predictions in a separate thread. Predictions of creationism: * The DNA of all species should "look" designed. This is ambiguous, but at the very least it could mean that it…

i've been reading about chimera, and i was wondering whether it would be possible to insert wolf claw cells or hair cells into a human embryo and make some sort of wolf-man. i know this would be morally wrong im just talking theoretically so don't get all accusing and start saying how sick i am. if you're wondering what im talking about please read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimera_(genetics)

Is there a CRC or Bible for biochemists? Basically, a reference book which one could use to look up the intra/extracellular concentrations of various metabolites, proteins, lipids, membranes, plasmids and or other macromolecules possibly organized by organism. Maybe containing lists of good buffers to use when working with particular cells or lists of the compositions of certain cells. You name it, it would be found in this tome. Does such a thing exist? What is it? Thanks, CSR

Hi people, I'm new here. I hope this is the right forum to post this in. Anyway, I need some help with my Bilogy assignment. I'm meant to relate structure to function for the digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system and respiratory system. I made a table with structure on one side and function on the other but apparently that's not good enough. Can someone help me to connect structure to function please?

Would I be right in saying that a person's physical beauty is really just a tool of the gene to further propagate itself because it's 'hardwired' into us to see beauty as a sign of fecundity? Heh, that's what one of my papers is based on, and if the whole premise of it is wrong... I guess this fits into the selfish gene theory. I'd love if you know something more about this subject and you could tell me more about it, too. Thanks! Edit: I suppose someone should move this thread to the Evolution subforum. Sorry about that.
