Is there a limit to how much our bodies can adapt? For example, if you lifted weights and you lifted more and more, will there be a time when your muscles can't get stronger?

Today I read a news from website, something is similar to twitter. It announces that Tsinghua University is the first one who prove that Heat Shock Protein 90α (Hsp90α) is a new marker for tumors, and also they have already researched and designed test kit with only a drop of blood. But upon the interesting and curious motion, i found one paper which has been published in Jan of 2012. Now i am confused. The address of that news as follows: http://blog.dianlake.com/tsinghua-university-developed-only-a-drop-of-blood-test-kits-can-be-measured-a-variety-of-cancers.html The address of that paper as follows: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3308794/#FN2 …

I was not certain where to post this, sorry if this is not the correct place. During breakfast the other day my friend randomly asked a question somewhere along the lines of "If you were to bathe in a pool of syrup, would you loose water through your skin?" i.e. through diffusion/osmosis. I found I was not able to come up with a satisfactory answer. Ultimately, I decided no, that there must be some barrier to prevent this, but i was not certain at all about this. My thought was, that if this was true, it would also mean that you would swell with water if you were swimming in a lake, which I feel does not happen, although I am not sure about this either. After rece…

Grasshoppers transform into locusts under certain adverse conditions. Obviously this is a survival strategy of the species. How did this kind of ‘collective wisdom’ develop? Is this explainable by evolution? Random mutation can probably explain structural enhancements of organisms, but seems a bit far fetch for that kind of survival strategies. There are many similar examples so there be must heaps of research into this area. Grateful for any pointers.

I have been researching into muscular growth and the science behind it and I am unsure about the volume of sarcoplasm between different muscle fibre types. I understand that in sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (type IIA fibres) there is an increase in sarcoplasm volume and less myofilament construction. I understand that in myofibrillar hypertrophy (type IIB fibres) there is an increase in myofilament construction but little increase in sarcoplasm volume. However in muscular cardio (type I fibres) is there an increase/decrease in sarcoplasm or myofilament volume/construction. I know that there are alot of blood vessels that contain myoglobin which transport away waste materials a…

As iron moves in the molten core it is accompanied by a change in the position of the magnetic poles. How does this effect migratory birds that rely on this for navigation? Can they undergo automatic re-calibration?

Yesterday I saw what I thought at first to be a black or dark brown squirrel sitting up on it;s back legs. But then it hopped on its back legs into the weeds & I noticed it had a slimmer tail than a squirrel. I'm in West Virginia. Any ideas about what it was?

Hi to everyone! I am a biomedical engineer but now i'm working with cell cultures, in particular c2c12 cells. My question is: how long the culture medium, and the differentiation medium, are good after I prepared it? Now I conserve them in a fridge at 4° C. Thanks

Hello! This is my first post so I hope that I am not breaking any rules by posting this thread here. This is however not a homework or I would post it in that section. This is just a random question that we got. Diarrhea means, as you probably know, that you have very loose stools with high water content. To counteract diarrhea the patient is sometimes given fructose because fructose is absorbed very efficiently in the cells of the small intestine. Explain why this counteracts diarrhea! I know or my guessings are that it got something to do with osmos. Could someone please explain this for me? Regards!

I put used tea leaves in a rubbish bin with a plastic liner. A strange looking orange growth appeard on the leaves. See photo. Strangely, when I put used tea leaves in a bin with a white plastic liner, snow white blooms of what appeard to be fungus grew on it, similar to the orange blooms but much more prolific. My great concern is whether there is something in the tea that may be harmful. Appreciate thoughts please.

This is the first time I used this forum. And English is my Second language. Sorry about any inconvenience. >< Cell organelles was discover many years ago with microscope. Bu how did they know the organelles shape and function?. For example : Mitochondria, how they know it is the 'powerhouse' of the cell? I read many Biology-related books but they always tell me the function with no history of discovery. I'm just curious. =)

Okay folks... please bear with me here... I needed a lighter topic (with all of the US government shutdown and debt ceiling talk nonsense), so am posting this rather silly question, but one to which I'm genuinely curious to know the answer. I've read what triggers the scent of asparagus pee, and how certain sulphur compounds are created when asparagusic acid gets broken down. I've also learned how 1) for some people there will be no detectable change in the scent of their urine after eating asparagus, 2) some people's pee smells after eating asparagus, but through some gift of fate they happen to lack the olfactory configuration to detect that smell, and 3) the …

Some people believe life begins at conception. It actually begins before that. Every egg cell, sperm cell and blood cell in our bodies are alive. The much more important question in the abortion debate is when does that life become human? Science and federal law say it is a human life when the baby is viable to live outside the mother. It is true that at conception the egg cell has a complete set of genes but it is not yet a human life. If I were to hire an architect to design a million dollar home but then someone were to destroy those plans, I could not sue for a million dollars. It is not yet a home although the plans show just what the final house would look like.

I'm guessing that nummulites usually fossilize dorsal side down. Is this correct? I've found a line in the PT that suggests the stones in the great pyramids were usually inverted so am seeking to falsify the concept. I've been looking at this for some time as it seems likely that the concepts have been with us a very long time and might even be the origin of "heads" and "tails" for coins. Greek boys used to tar one side of these fossils to play games with them. They make up a significant percentage of the weight of G1.

Thanks. I am trying to work on a science project involving the relationship between external sound and cricket chirps, and I want to check if this article has anything to do with my topic. Thank you!
