The InterAcademy Council (within the UN framework) has been considering recently "inventing a new global organization for developing worldwide cooperation for a science-based better future". Seems to me that the long march towards a worldwide cooperation for a "science-based better future" might require, first, a starting step to develop a worldwide consensus on the reasons-incentives-goals for the march. The following is an outline of a project I propose for starting such a worldwide move. Any comments/ suggestions? SCM PROJECT A. Prepare and present a Scientist Creed Manifest (SCM) as a basis of a call for tolerance and cooperation between humans.…

Jeez this must be tedious, but i promise this is the last time i'll ask this type of question. I've started like two other threads on basically the same premise, and posted my demand for someone to make me understand on more threads than i can remember. So I was over this idiocy when someone pointed out to me how complicated evolution really is, and anyone who claims to understand really how it works is not being honest. But i was just wondering, can anyone tell me or is there a book that tells me step by step how we got to where we are today : I understand the concept that small variations lead up to complex adaptations, i am just wondering how extensive our knowle…

I need to identify a motor/system that has sufficient capacity to open and close double hung windows at a speed consistent with that at which a person would raise and close them, figure about 16 inches of movement per sec with a maximum range of 18 inches. The apparatus would need to be capable of repeating this operations several times a minute for durations up to about 3 or 4 hours. Any recommendations? This is for a public health research product and I'm a chemist not an engineer so pardon the lack of mechanical fluency in this description. However, I am capable of handling the mechanics once identified. I know that many sites sell motors, but they are a bit overwh…

I've been tossing around the idea of starting a small organization or website to promote an early interest in science for kids ages 6-14. I just don't see as many kids interested in core sciences these days. When I was younger, I had a chemistry set, telescope, model rockets, gyroscopes, and all kinds of fascinating "science-type" toys. Most kids now days would rather play nintendo and browse the internet (ironic of course, being that the internet would be the main delivery format). Anyhow, I'm looking for ideas. Obviously it would be a non-profit site. I'm thinking about an interactive site with tons of fun (safe) things to do and make, and simple experiments to do. …

There is this black string that used to be my belt. Well it's not a string exactly. It's a stretchy, elastic material. I tied this string to my back pack and string it. It makes sounds. It vibrates very fast. When it vibrates, I can see a meshing of red and blue. I don't know where this red and blue comes from. Can someone explain this phenomena to me? This red and blue appearing when I pluck my guitar.

Ok, if I boil some rice with water, and take the ricey boiled water, and put it in, oh, say, a petri dish, and I put it (dish w/ rice water) in the refrigerator, will it make a gel??? I have heard it is a great substitute for agar. Also, some rice that i boiled, I left wet, and put it in the refrig to save, the next day, it seemed to be in a gel. Is boiling rice and taking the "juice" a procedure of making gel, will it work, or was my experience just a freak accident, comments will be appreciated?

today in London a new world record was set by a man wearing a rocket pack. he acheived a vertical height of 152 feet, and landed ontop of a building in front of a huge crowd. I`ll pressent more details as they appear later {edit} I`m awaiting email from Sky News, hopefully they`ll send me the full story, at that point, I`ll then paste it in here, and maybe move this to the News forum at that point

Hey, I had a question that i cannot for the life of me figure out, and this is how it goes, "1. Find the amount of kinetic energy (joules) of the earth's Atmosphere" So i know that temprature is the measure of the kinetic energy that molecules are giving off at a certain time, or something to that extent But I cannot figure out how to convert lets say an average sunny day temprature into joules, if anyone knows how i can do that or if my whole train of thought is off, please tell me Here are 2 other questions that go along with it, 2. Find the kinetic energy of a moderate hurricane 3. Find the latent heat released by 5cm of rain over the state of G…

Heelstone Carvings "Quartz Hydration" The new technique, called "Quartz Hydration", takes advantage of the natural properties of quartz, a mineral found in many rocks. Whenever a rock containing quartz is cut or polished, as in the world famous Lion head, Calf head, Man face, and Eagle wings' Heelstone Carvings at Stonehenge, the quartz at the surface is left exposed. Over time, water diffuses into the quartz, forming a layer. By measuring the layer, how long ago the rock was cut is determined. The technique can be used to date stone carvings that were created between 100 and about 100,000 years ago. A paper outlining the technique is available in the current issue of…

This morning I woke up wondering: Where does the force come from that splits trees in two and can 'blow' poeple away. -about the tree: The tree is an conductor and the gas of water creates the pressure that causes the damage. But why nicely split up, shouldn't the whole tree have equal damage? (current spread over the full diameter of the trunk) maybe some electromagnetical forces? -about the body: (not necessary lightning) The muscles of the body are triggered and you are actually throwing yourself away? and some help from wind due to the heated air? any more thoughts?

Well, I was scanning through a bunch of raw image files from nasa's site, and I came accross this stuff. They are NOT EDITED IMAGES. What are these, they seem artificcial, could it be an affect of the spirit ship on a rock or soething??? Here are the image URLs. UPDATE: THIS IS NO JOKE, THESE ARE REAL IMAGES FROM NASA, THEIR SOURCE: http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit.html ANOTHER UPDATE, lol OK, The images were found in sets 56 and 60 of the navigation camera, HERE are links(click each thumbnail to view a larger one, then click again to view the full image): http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit_n060.html AND http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.go…

When I was 8 or 9 or so...I had night terrors, they started off pretty randomly and not very often. But eventually they started to get bad, no violent or anything, but frequent. So, I went to the doctors. Well, when I was in pre-school I was left handed. But, I went to a Catholic school. The crazy nuns made me write with my right hand. The doctors said that people that write with there left hand think with the right side of there brain and people that write with there right hand think with the left side of there brain. When they made me switch hands it messed up something, causing night terrors. I'm not sure if this is right, but maybe...it made me incredible intellegent…

I was wondering...If the technology wree available, could one dig a hole EXTREMELY far down into the earth and put the hole in the middle of the ocean then let the ocean water inside? What would happen? Would the core blow up? Would the tectonic plates shift suddenly? Would volcanoes form where there were no volcanoes before? I would love you have more information on the outcome.

To be my "payload specialist" for my next video rocket. I want to purchase a wireless camera, but it requires that someone with a HAM license is at least involved with the rocket. This would entail telling what I can and can't do. Anyone anyone?

I launched the second incarnation of my video rocket today. Initially I tried to spark the ignitor using a 6 volt battery, but it wouldn't fire. Then I hooked it up to my van's battery (in the video), which worked fine. Unfortunately, the rocket suffered a hard impact (you can sort of see at the end of the video). The rocket was quite a few ounces heavier than the parachute was designed for, but I figured it would be fine. Two fins broke off when the rocket touched down. The camera lens was (unwisely designed) protruding a tiny bit from the rocket's nose cone. On impact, the lens came loose from its port on the chipset, which destroyed all the data. So all I have left…

Thorne shrugged, "They're still just fantasies, They're not real. Have you ever seen a self-esteem? Can you bring me one on a plate? How about a photon? Can you bring me one of those?" Kelly shook her head. "No, but. . ." "And you never will, because those things don't exist. No matter how seriously people take them," Thorne said. "A hundred years from now people will look back at us and laugh. They'll say, 'You know what people used to belive? They belived in photons and electrons. Can you imagine anything so silly?' They'll have a good laugh, because by then there will be newer and better fantasies." Thorne shook his head. "And meanwhile, you feel the way th…

I just did a crysstal making experiment and it went a little wacky. I used Magnesium Sulphate and created a super-saturatedd solution. Let it crystalie for a couple of weeks, and I have HUGE GREAT CRYSTALS. However, there is also a HUGE problem. He crystals are sooooooooooooooo fragile, that even if I ligtly touch them, they seem to fall apart. Is there any way tat I can preserve the crystals. Could I coat them with something, to make them stifer? please help me preserve these beuties!!?
