I'm just going to ask a couple of simple questions here; what, exactly, would it mean for a future computer A.I. to be better than their human counterparts? What would such a system be like? There is much talk about creating such systems (after we figure out how to make it more human-like), and certainly many sci-fi speculations as to what might happen, but they don't really address the epistemological issues directly. Say we did create a system that did indeed surpass us in intellectual and cognitive abilities. What would that be like and how would we know?

Hey Everyone :-D I was just wondering if there are many Science Jobs out there focusing on paranormal activity? I would really like to look into this kind of work as i find it fascinating, I also enjoy gathering info on other dimensions such as dream planes and how the subconscious mind works. Iv included a Wikipidia link to give an idea of what kind of areas I would like to go into. Any suggestion would be welcome Mel

I would like to recieve responses in this post regarding people's understanding of the universe. Or rather how they perceive it. Was there a beginning and will there be an end, or is the universe static?

Hello everyone I have a quick question why is the air less dense higher up you go. I can understand air expands and the volume is bigger hence less dence but that only happens if it is warm, higher you go it is cooler so how does air expand. Thank you!!

Okay I have this really puzzling question. People say years from now that the water supply will get really low.But we have miles of ocean that can be used and purified. Suprisingly we can't get it from the ocean to the purification place. I have a solution though or atleast a hypothesis to solve the problem. Why don't we just use them like to phone cables in the ocean? They travel along the ocean to the purification! Please state your flaws with my idea, your own ideas, etc.

WARNING: bad grammer ahead I kept wondering.. since i was 5.. teachers kept telling me that "the big bang" made the universe.. but i just couldn't understand how the "universe" came from a bang.. so, from then on, i always thought that empty space resulted from the bang... (i learn later that matter/energy.. etc) now, here's what i dont understand.. if the universe came from a bang.. then, what did it expand into? another universe or just space? like.. how can space go on forever,.. ive always imagined space to be a big box of empty space.. but.. sooner or later, won't you reach a stop?.. and if you do reach that "wall".. what's after that wall.??? if space loop…

Im doing a presentation for school and I need different perspectives on peoples ideas on the limits of science (eg like on genetic engineering, using science to kill(eg atomic bomb)) Here are some questions; What do you think the limits should be? Why do you think this? Has anything in your own life influenced this? And the generic questions (for status and what not) age- county- job-(if you want) thanks alot

If im right, theres only a set amount of things to learn in the universe before you learn it all, and i know theres alot of time until so, will we or any other civilization learn it all so science is no longer science and it is just learning already recorded things? I hope im wrong.

Unable to find any proper justification to place this in any other category, I suppose this shall suffice, however I have a question. I'm thinking, for an upcoming science fair, to do a project regarding a possible method to stop shoreline erosion. I've delved into the basic concepts, chemical and physical weathering, transportation erosion, on the general topic, however, I find myself lacking ideas. Asked my teacher for help, which I gained little of, though he gave the hint of looking up how the direction of shoreline currents play an active role. I searched on google, but found little. Any ideas perhaps on the subject. Information is important, however, might anyone a…

hi. im a freshman in highschool, and i want to finish highschool much faster than its going. i know i can learn all the stuff myself through the library and internet{wich i am} but i still have to go through 4 years of stuff i already know. im not saying that im smarter than anyone else, i just am more interested in science in particular and take in information becuase i want to, not because i have to, so its alot easier for me than the average teenager who takes 4 reluctant years to learn stuff that their going to discard afterwards anyways. my point is that i wanted to see if anyone knew of any ways to get out of the 4 year thing, still learning the same stuff, jus…

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me decide on which material i should use. I am looking for a material that has a high specific heat and does not radiate (any or very little) heat from the sun. This material would need to be relatively cheap and easy to obtain. Some one told me that styrofoam may work well because it does not radiate very much heat from the sun, but im not sure about that idea. If anyone has any other ideas on what i might be possibly looking for please let me know. Thanks

Lacking any better category, i've decided to use the General Sciences thread. Anyway, to go straight to the point. In cryogenics, chemistry, and other such endeavours, how are incredibly low temperatures achieved? I understand how high temperatures would work, (simple heating) however how can heat be taken away. I know based on the basic gas laws that increasing the pressure, would work, but how is it actually done? Are there pressurized gases at work, around a main tank, or is it done by some other means? Help would be most appreciated.

First off, I'm not quite sure if this is in the right section...I guess that in some sense this could be considered more of a philosophy question than a science one. Anyways, here goes: Most people probably believe that we have free will, and that all of our actions are completely decided by, well, "us". I'm not so sure about it, though. Here's my reasoning: Most of the universe seems to work in very exact clockwork patterns. If you mix A amount of B chemical with X amount of Y chemical, it will always produce the same results. No variation. Of course, you could say that something like flipping a coin is random. But is it really? The amount of force you flip …

New Publications: "Spatial and temporal variability in aerosol properties over the Mediterranean basin based on 6-year (2000-2006) MODIS data" Papadimas et al., 2008 JGR (JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-Atmospheres), VOL. 113, D11205, doi:10.1029/2007JD009189, 2008 http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2008/2007JD009189.shtml Abstract The temporal variability of aerosol optical properties is investigated over the broader Mediterranean basin, with emphasis on aerosol optical depth (AOD) that is an effective measure of aerosol load. The study is performed using Collection 005 Level-3 mean daily spectral aerosol data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrora…
