In the wikipedia article about infanticide, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infanticide there is a paragraph that says: "However, Milner's treatise includes at the same time cultural hypotheses for the practice, and his approach to the subject has been criticized as both scholarly and an idealized view of infanticide.[143]" What the heck does it mean that a scientific work is "scholarly?"

My transit tickets have a magnetic strip, and are regularly getting demagnetized. I've eliminated every magnet I can find, but despite my best efforts, I cannot track down the source....so have to assume its coming from outside the house. I'm looking for any cheap/commonly available material to make a ticket holder that will protect my tickets. I'm already aware of the expensive stuff (like metal alloys). Any ideas?

What would happen if... 1. There was no gravity for 10 seconds?2. you put a spider in a container and pump it up with huge amounts of oxygen? 3. you put spider dna in a human. Theoretically you make spiderman? Now a few other questions 1. Why do we get goosebumps on a really good part of a song? 2. Why do males get the "morning erection" sometimes? 3. How do ice comets work? If they are travelling so fast, surely they should be on fire and lose ice? Please answers sensibly. If it isn't too hard please go into detail and justify certain conclusions. Don't ask why i ask these. These are just some of many questions that i do or will wonder.. Thanks

If you vote a as b, a becomes b. This bother anyone else? also, 0 doesn't have any volume does it? Also, I got to thinking, since zero doesn't exist can't it not actually be used for any sort of measurement? You would have to use only quantatitive values to measure right?

Hello Everyone. Do you know any cases in your research field when a paper, which was supposed to be referenced in another paper, but did not get a citation? How often do such cases happen?

  8. Hello, everyone! I'm new so bare with me if this is a repeated topic or in the wrong place A coworker of mine swears he is experiencing "paranormal activity" in his new home. I'm skeptical to say the least. However, I don't want to bludgeon him with my skepticism every time he talks with me about it. I want to be reasonably skeptical but also maintain a good scientific mindset about it. So my question is this: are there any good, reliable scientific studies into the paranormal? And if so, what were their conclusions? I did some Googling and found mostly non-scientific results and mumbo-jumbo. I'd like to get a good scientific basis on the topic so I don't feel ignorant …

Also, DSC = Differential Scanning Calorimetry. PS: Sorry if this is the wrong place of the forum to ask such question.

  10. Hey guys, I came across this article and wanted to hear your guys' input on it. I believe it is called mind-body dualism, but basically it asks the question "Where is the mind located" ? Before you call it pseudoscience, there are many credible researchers doing studies on this in the topic of Cognitive Science Read it and let me know what you think! [link removed]

  11. I'm talking a sociology of science course and am due to write an essay on a topic of my choosing, but I'm having trouble finding a topic. I've found sociology in general to not be my cup of tea, but one aspect I did find interesting was the history of science aspect - we reviewed a few cases trying laboriously to find instances where factors from outside of science (ideologies, personal beliefs of scientists or even ideas from other more or less unrelated scientific disciplines) influenced the development of a branch of science or a theory. Could someone point me to some such cases that I might investigate and find enough material to write an essay on? One thing t…

I've heard that were using new technologies to predict patterns. Theres a wide range of applicability, but i'd like to focus on more immediate precautions. We will notice patterns of activity and be able to trace them better. War is not an option.... But, stress shouldn't be am option either. Atriophibrilation can kill and it's best to ease into change. Please, proceed to give out warnings to repeat offenders for the below examples. Smoking. A new form of smoking had been released that has challenged the healthiness and gave us an alternative, namely, electronic cigarettes. It is a fallacy to appeal to tradition and these people should be aware that there are heal…

Hi. Garlic is supposed to be harvested by mid summer, when plant shows certain signs and bulb has developed to a 'normal' size. The question is; not harvesting the garlic for another year until next summer, will the plant produce more bulbs, bigger bulb, plant dies, existing cloves germinate or stays the same ?

Upon extending a pseudoscientific theory of mine for a science fiction novel, I came upon a rather unforseen problem. I realised that I needed a unit with which to measure the complexity of physical systems. As with most of my struggles, I immediately consulted Google, but could find nothing more helpful than this. The problem is, quantifying complexity is made very complex (pardon the pun) by principle, as complexity is generally defined by the observer. If you define complexity as the number and intricacy of connections in a system, how do you define which of those connections are more complex? Perhaps the reasons I can't find a unit of complexity is because complex…

  17. Hey guys thanks for reading. Usually I would float on down to the local University, however due to newly imposed campus laws only students are permitted. To start with, classic rookie question, when a metal (Let's say Iron for example) is in its liquid/molten form, does it react to magnetism the same as it would as a solid? And if not, are there any metals that do? (Tried googling a lot of the questions I have to no avail) Cheers again!!

I have posted this in Biology and Earth Sciences. Hi everyone I am taking a course on career exploration and one of the things I have to do is interview some people who are in careers of which I am studying for (Natural Sciences at the moment). If anyone has a moment to answer some Q's I will post them here and you can reply or PM me the answers. Thanks if you have time! What is your job? What do you like most about you job and why? How did you decide to get into this field and what steps did you take to enter the field? What alternative ways can one enter this field? What training would you recommend for someone who wanted to enter this field now? Wha…

I always put a spoonful of honey on my breakfast porridge. (Granulated sugar tastes nicer, but honey is better for health, supposedly). The thing is, where does all the honey come from. I buy my honey in a jar, from a local supermarket, and its shelves always have masses of jars stacked on them. When you think of how many supermarkets there are in the world, and how many jars of honey they have on their shelves, how much honey does that represent - a million tons? Could that massive amount really all come from bees - wouldn't there have to be so many bees, to produce it, that there'd be huge bee-farms all over the place? But has anyone ever seen them? The …

I feel that teaching methods of Science today is too theoretical. There is not too much emphasis on practicals. And we are not told much about the scientific method ( the cornerstone of science ). Science in school has become too boring and dry I feel. Should the way of teaching be changed, what are your thoughts ? ( I have experience with the Indian Education system only as I live in India, but, I think the world prevails worldwide. Correct me if i'm wrong. )

  23. I just got an Inspector Geiger Counter that has a data-out port. It normally is used with "Observer" software from SEINTL but I was wondering if there are other data loggers that can pull in the data? I'd like to wander around various places (amatuer rock collector and I live in a very granite-rich area) and collect data on the radioactive content of some of the rocks around here but the INspector doesn't have any onboard data storage and I don't really want to lug the laptop along with it. Does anyone have one of these and any ideas on datalogging for it? Thanks
