Cu(s) + 2NO3-(aq) + 4H+(aq) -> Cu2+(aq) + 2NO2(g) + 2H2O(l) Which of the following takes place during the reaction above? A) Cu(s) is oxidized B)Cu(s) is reduced C)H+(aq) is oxidized D)H+(aq) is reduced E)NO3-(aq) is oxidized The answer is A, and I got it right, but the solution also said that NO3- is reduced, but I don't see how that's possible.Wouldn't it be oxidized if it's going from NO3- to NO2?

Hi guys so this is the problem I want to ask. For part A I got F=mg +k (deltax), And for part B I got P=Patm+F/A (F is from part A.) So part C is where I got confused. What does it mean by here quadratic equation? In my mind if the piston is allowed to reach equilibrium, the volume of the gas would change(in this case, double) and the pressure would maintain the same. But them I saw part D part E and so on and I got threw off. I have no idea how to approach part c. Please help!

  4. The problem asks what is wrong with the name 3-ethyl-4,4,-dimethylhexane. Is ethyl supposed to be on carbon 4 and the two methyls on carbon 3? McMurry's text if there is a branch point occuring equidistant from both ends, begin counting from the end nearer the second branch point. In this case, both ends are still the same distance from the second branch point. Do I begin counting from the end closer to the higher branched carbon, the carbon with two methyls attached to it?

Let's say we have a pentane with an oxygen double bonded to carbon 2. Is that an acetyl functional group or a ketone? My organic chemistry book by McMurry doesn't list acetyl in the table of functional groups which orders them in the priority they have in the name. How do I prioritize an acetyl functional group when naming a compound?

Hello to all.. I have some homework to do but I haven't good thermodynamics background experience... The "translated homework is".. The compressor has a gass mas flow of 45 kg/min. on the entrance the specific enthalpy is 46 kJ/kg. On the exhaust the enthalpy is of 175 kJ/kg. Heat "dispersion" into the environment is 105 kJ/min. Define the engine power if the effiency is 75%... From this i have first defined the variables h1 = 46 kJ/kg h2= 175 kJ/kg Qod = 105 kJ/min = 0,75 kg/s ?? eff = 75% = 0,75 m= 45 kg/min = 0,75 kg/s ?? On some internet pages i have found that Power = m * (h2 - h1) and eff = P/Psteam Please let me know 1.) If the u…

Hey guys! I'm new here, so firstly- hello! I've a exercise to from Metrology. Evaluate measurement uncertainty for the following measurement: 1. Measurement quantity: length of a bar L = 500 mm 2. Material of the measuring object: steel 3. Temperature range in the measuring room: 14 to 26 °C 4. Measurement instrument: Micrometer; digital (resolution 0,001 mm) - Uncertainty of calibration: U = 2 µ m + 4 × 10-6 × L 5. Temperature difference between the measurement object and the measurement instrument:DT = 2 °C I have problem because I'm now on exchange, and this is my first time with Metrology. I didn't had any lectures, practice and etc. In internet I found a lot of …

Hello everyone! In preperation for my approval exam to med school: A sound source sends waves with a power of [math]100\text{ W}[/math]. The sound level, expressed in [math]\text{dB}[/math] at a distance of [math]10\text{ m}[/math] is: A. 139 B. 129 C. 109 D. 10 I tried to solve this like this: If [math]\left[i\right]=\text{Wm}^{-2}[/math], then [math]I=Px^{-2}[/math]: [math]I=100\text{ W}\cdot 100^{-1}\text{ m}^{-2}=1\text{ Wm}^{-2}[/math] [math]N=120+10\cdot\log{I}=120+10\cdot\log{1}=120\text{ dB}[/math] Clearly, this isn't right. Can someone help me? The answer should be C. Also tried to solve this by picking x² = 10²*pi, the result then w…

Elements A and X combine to form the compound A3X2. If the electron-dot symbol of the neutral atom A shows two electrons, the number of electrons in this symbol for atom X must be 2 4 5 6 My initial answer would have been 3 because if each A has 2, and there are three of them, there would be 6 total for A, so you need 6 total for X, so each X would need 3, but that would not an option. So I just picked 5 because 3+5=8. 5 is the right answer, but why?

I'm supposed to determine products for the given set of reactions (A,B, C) CH2=CH-CH3 + HBr --> A A + H2S --> B B + CH3I --> C A is obviously 2-bromopropane, but what I'm unsure about is whether it will react with H2S in both substitution and elimination? If yes, would the resulting alkene (elimination product) react with CH3-I to form alkyl halide, whereas thiol (substitution product) would react to form sulfide?

  17. Hello. I am a third year Medical Technology student. In our country, Phlebotomy is almost always done by the MedTechs. You can say that it is a very, very vital skill for me to learn. However, no matter how many times I've done it, I can't seem to get it right. Our class is using vacutainers and is currently working on the median cubital vein. While I have no problem locating the vein with my fingers, everytime I slide the needle in, no blood comes out when I finally insert the vacutainer tube. I always, always seem to be missing the vein. Is there any tips or tricksin hitting the veins? How would you know if you've already hit one? My uncle, an old student of Phy…

When is it correct to draw a lone pair of electrons on a carbon atom in a molecule when drawing resonance structures? Is it correct as long as the carbon atom fits the X=Y-Z* model? The "X" atom and "Y" atom are double bonded and the * denotes the "Z" atom, which is single bonded to the "Y" atom, has either an empty orbital, orbital with one electron, or a lone pair. In carbon's case I believe it would usually be an empty orbital.

  22. I'm re-reading my organic chemistry book to prepare for a lab class, and I've taken a quantum chemistry class. I don't remember too much from quantum chemistry. In a general chemistry sense, is there a way to determine a number of bonds an atom can make just by looking at its position from the periodic table? For example, without quantum chemistry knowledge, how should I know that phosphorous can make 5 bonds? Is it just something to be memorized until quantum chemistry?

  23. Hi all, I'm a high school student looking to perform research for science fair, but I want to make sure my experiment follows the "Use of Humans as Test Subjects" rules. 1. Part of my experiment requires participants to undergo ~24 hours of sleep loss. I understand that sleep loss is taxing on the body, but the negative effects of pulling an all-nighter do not pose any serious health risks and disappear after a good night's sleep. Would this violate the rule "Humans must not be subjected to treatments that are considered hazardous and that could result in undue stress, injury, or death to the subject"? 2. My experiment also requires the administration of caffeine…
