The Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan has launched the world's first solar sail in to orbit. Previously only seen in science fiction, solar sails represent a fuel-free method of constant acceleration. They are the first potential extrasolar transport technology mankind has managed to fully realise. http://www.isas.jaxa.jp/e/snews/2004/0809.shtml

I have been reviewing my recent posts, and most in this forum seem to reply to yours. I just want to assure you that this is entirely without intent. I don't know, maybe it's because we are both Aussies, but at seemingly opposite ends of the political spectrum that your posts strike a chord with me, (After all, who cares what the yanks and poms think? ) and so I reply. (What do the people in the Psych Forum think of that theory? ) I just wanted you to know that my responses have not in any way been the result of a personal vendetta, and if I have given the impression that I've been hounding you, then I honestly apologise. That was never my intent. Should yo…

last night i had the opportunity to see howard dean speak. i found him to be remarkably reasonable and insightful. he first spoke of the importance of running for office. according to him, most of the people in lower political positions have minimal if any prior experience. he told the story of his cousin, a democrat who was elected to a position in utah, the most conservative state. he won because there was a scandal, but now he has the opportunity to gain back some left support in a very conservative state. also, he mentioned how in alabama (i think it was alabama, or another southern state) a black lesbian woman was elected. now she may be able to influence p…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3005875.stm One of the greatest problems in mathematics, the Poincare Conjecture, may have been solved by a Russian Mathematician, but only as an afterthought to his solution of the "Geometrisation Conjecture" proposed by the American mathematician William Thurston in the 1970s - a far more ambitious proposal that defines and characterises all three-dimensional surfaces. Should his solution survive scrutiny for two years, then he wins a $1m prize from the Clay Mathematics Institute in Massachusetts. apparently this has great implications for physics and maths, but I don't know what they are!

This is a twist on the standard county-level electoral map, done by a professor at Princeton. The problem with those "sea of red" maps is that they convey the idea that the "red states" are 100% pro-Bush, when in fact that's just an artifact of the electoral college system (nor are the "blue states" typically 100% pro-Kerry). We all know this intuitively, but there wasn't a really good graphic that showed it. Well, no longer. This map actually conveys the county-by-county vote using shades, from blue to red, indicating percentages. http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/ It sure gives a much different perspective, doesn't it?

I'm kinda bleary-eyed at the moment so these numbers might not be all that accurate. I just threw 'em together myself, they're not from a news source. Just some stuff I thought was interesting. Please don't construe this as pro-Bush sentiment. As I've said before, I love "sticking it" to extremists on both sides, and I'm going to enjoy laughing at liberals in particular, but my positions, as stated elsewhere on this board, have not changed. I'm especially outraged at the lack of work in fixing the influence of special interests in the House. But that having been said.... - Bush won both the popular vote and the electoral college vote - He got more total vo…

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=6663896 This is hitting at just the right moment to catch the Friday evening news cycle. Normally this is the "take out the trash" news day, but Jennings, Rather and Brokaw will all be on the air tonight (they don't always "do" Fridays). I predict this will sharply spike Bush's poll numbers over the weekend polls, which are typically conducted on Friday night and Saturday. It could be just enough to nudge Ohio and New Jersey, both of which have been moving to the right specifically because of security issues, over the edge. Nothing helps an incumbant like a murderous terrorist telling you …

This thread is probably useful to Florida residents only, but since blike asked, and I know we have a few Floridians here, I'll go ahead and post them. Apologies to anyone outside of Florida for any wasted bandwidth. ================== (By the way, one of the links Douglas posted in another thread, at the Florida Sports Fishermen Forum, has an excellent discussion area for all eight amendments, including polls. Some good discussion going on there. Link just below this paragraph.) http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=99 ================== There are EIGHT proposed amendments to the state constitution. Amendmends Sources: http://www.c…

Which party are you? http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz-score/ LIBERTARIANS support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties See where it maps you at.

After Micheal Moore puts his personal agenda movie out to promote the size of his wallet, there is a documentary dedicate to proving him wrong. In the major rental stores, there will be only a couple of copies there compared to Moores 40. I havent seen either movie, but for you Moore fans, why dont you watch it and see for yourself. I really do hate politics and hollywood. Actors, directors, singers, and so on just need to quit putting there own agenda out there. Too many people these days trust everything they read, hear and see on tv. People just need to research and make up there own mind.

http://www.itshappening.com made headline news when the owner of the site successfully hijacked the former site of Al-Qaeda http://www.alneda.com shortly following 9/11. The FBI and CIA have kept close watch of the site. After the hijacking, many followers of the crazed terrorist mastermind took the newly created message board to rant and rave their frustration and many have dived head in to debate the terrorists and pre-empt as well as neutralize their propaganda. Some terrorists and terrorist sympathizers such as Usamah AlQariah and FC-UK, as well as many others rant incoherently on the net calling for the death of all Americans in this no-holds-barred where the intr…

Recently, there were dozens of fliers posted all around the school about a free showing of Michael Moore's film [9/11] in one of the small auditorium. Although I’ve heard a lot about it, good and bad, I still wanted to see it. (Plus I can hardly ever turn up something free ) In any case, I’ve gotten word that the school has stopped the showing. I don’t exactly know why. What exactly could that movie accomplish? Is it really bias enough to where its worth banning to young voters? Like I said before in other posts, I continue to be indifferent onto conservatism and liberalism – I’m, at this point- neither; this wouldn’t stop me from going to see it tho…

There was once a kingdom where most people could not see. Citizens coped with this cheerfully, for it was a gentle land where familiar chores changed little from day to day. Furthermore, about one person in a hundred did have eyesight! These specialists took care of jobs like policing, shouting directions, or reporting when something new was going on. The sighted ones weren't superior. They acquired vision by eating a certain type of extremely bitter fruit. Everyone else thanked them for undergoing this sacrifice, and so left the task of seeing to professionals. They went on with their routines, confident in a popular old saying: "A sighted person never lies…
