Science Education

Colleges, grad programs, MCAT, GRE, courses, and other aspects of scientific education.

  1. I plan on going to this school, and I want to know if anyone else here has been there, went there, and what opinions you have about it. I also want to know how good of a program it is. I've checked the website (very thoroughly, mind you), and read about it, but I think first hand experience is better. http://www.ncssm.edu

In the middle are the other species of man in their evolutionary form. can anyone direct me to a link that shows this diagram. it is not a chart it is a true drawing of cro-magnum to neanderthal and so on. hope you can help, thanks.

This dual standard in science is connected to the different perfection constraints placed on different types of science. Let me explain this with an example. If one was to propose a theory for a phenomena in nature, which can explain the obervational data and be supported with the math it will last until data appears that creates contradictions. The theory either has to be able to evolve and accommodate the new data or it becomes obsolete. Theory is subject to a very high standard, which is good. If we look at empirical correlations, which are a different breed of theory, the standards are much more lax. For example, the empirical data equates cigarette smoking with…

I'm going to be taking the GRE subject test in general biology this fall. If anyone else going to be taking it as well, I'd love to study with you. Though we can't physically get together to study (unless you live in Northern Indiana LOL) I think we could encourage each other to keep on track. Anyway, please PM me if you are interested in forming a biology GRE study group

Does anyone know of any colleges/universities that offer courses in nanotechnology? It is something that I'm interested in, and I think now would be a great time for me to get into the field. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I'm not sure where to post this, so I'll just put it hear because its related to university. Anyways, I was wondering what I should study in university if I want to end up working at some chip-making company, like Intel, AMD, etc. Preferably on the R&D team, but basically any type of science-based work at one of those companies. Thanks for your input, LazerFazer

So, I have done my research on the sorts of schools that I would like to apply to since it is just about time for me. Originally, I started with the list of 50 schools that had MD/PhD programs as sponsored by NIH, and then narrowed it down to those schools that had good chemical and computer engineering programs, or maybe experimental physics, etc. However, recently I have found that I would much rather find those universities that bust paywalls. The importance of universities is not only the social environment wherein professors and other experts and peers can be contacted, but the library. These libraries with thousands of journals and tens of thousands of archived …

Ok next year I hope to be attending college, it seems as though alot of people on this forum are already in college, so i was hoping for some advice. I am pretty limited on my college options considering im poor, and my class rank is embarassing low:-( I'm probably gonna end up going to Columbus State University in Georgia, then hopefully get enough money to transfer to the University of Georgia. I have always wanted to be a scientist, and science and math are by far my best subjects. I am looking for a good program in Neuroscience, I noticed a few people in here going that route, and would be interested in hearing about that. Is it as fun as you thought it was go…

i was just wondering, besides lab experience, working with professors, an original research project as well as the right to publish and teach and the respect of the academic community, wat does one learn through acquiring a PhD in terms of subject mastery that a self-motivated bright layman with the right textbooks can't teach himself from the ground-up, all the way to the most advanced concepts? is there any advantage a PhD holder has that is purely knowledge-of-subject-material-based, besides all the other things that one with a PhD would have that i already listed, or can a bright and motivated layman equal him in this one aspect, namely, cold knowledge of subject mat…

  14. Just as a preface: I do not intend to make a technology rant here, nor do I intend to succumb to the old "in the olden times everything was better" notions. In addition, I think there was already a similar thread somewhere but I could not dig it up. What I'd like to have is some input in the following thoughts: Background: At the moment I (still) work as a postdoc but due to various reasons I have a slightly higher than average workload regarding to creating and supervising both, theoretical and practical courses. Due to the nature of the topics I teach, the practical courses alone are usually not a sufficient indicator of understanding the topic, thus I usually…

  16. During the dark ages you were told what to believe and those who went against such doctrine were punished severely. In today’s western society most people are taught that we are out of the dark ages. That is an outright lie that is used to convince everyone that what is being taught in the government and church controlled schools is true science. What is actually being taught are outdated beliefs that are known to be incorrect but conform to the views of those in authority. And, just as in the past, anyone who succeeds in exposing the flaws in such views is punished severely. Yes, even in America. And what’s worse is that even the newspapers, our last resort in defe…

Is anyone else taking the MCAT on April 17th? I'm sweating blood over it. I've been studying pretty seriously since mid-december, and doing some light reviewing before that. For those of you who don't know, the MCAT is the Medical College Admissions Test. Its a 6 hour (!) test which covers biology1&2, physics 1&2, organic 1&2, general chemistry 1&2--along with verbal reasoning and two writing samples. It's divided into three sections--verbal reasoning, physical sciences, biological sciences. Each section is scaled out of 15 points, for a possible 45 total on the test. The average premedical student scores a 25 on the test, with the average matricu…

I made an offhand comment in another thread about someone deserving to have their doctorate degree "revoked" by the granting institution. This got me thinking: has anyone ever heard of a doctorate degree being revoked for any reason other than issues with the thesis or coursework that came to light after the person earned the degree?

So im trying to see what the general feeling towards it is, so to anyone doing or has done comp sci my questions are: is it a dificult degree? - id like to do something that is challenging and I havent heard great things (ie that cs is an easy degree etc) is it a rewarding degree ? - do you enjoy it ? are the jobs out there for cs grads as bad as everyone tells me, or as good as the uni's make ou…

Hello, I graduated from UC Berkeley several years ago with a degree in biology with a good GPA (3.98/4.00) though with very few math classes. I'm now interested in studying either computer science or computer engineering to conduct applied research in AI. I have two main options: 1) Pursue a 2nd bachelor's degree at Berkeley (top 3 program) 2) Pursue a postbac/masters at a less competitive university Looking online, I've found that Brandeis and Boston University both offer a combined postbac/masters program in CS or computer engineering that I could probably complete in 3-4 years. My only fear is that this route will make me less competitive for Ph…

In decision making. Basically I just would like to ask a simple question. If you wanted to be able to study basically anything or everything or have that option open to you for instance, from studying say bacteria to the formation of a galaxy to the behavior of an electron in the atmosphere of Mars, what would be the best field of science to do this in? I have a little less then a year before I have to make a choice basically in education on what I would like to do, every time I think about it I can never reduce such to an answer that I can live with really. I cant find any comfort in basically putting blinders on for the most part and only studying a certai…

I am currently in the 6th form at school, and am looking to go to a university that has a good facility for either mechanical or electronical engineering courses. I would hope to do several years at university, achieving the highest qualification I can, followed by some years working in the Navy or the MOD as a chartered engineer. I am doing A levels (maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, electronics) and i expect to get mostly A grades with perhaps one or two B grades. Please could someone give me advice on where to go, or perhaps a good link where i could find out about the different options avaliable to me. Thank you in advance.
