Good morning, afternoon, or evening, depending on your timezone. I am a 24-year-old undergrad *currently* majoring in Biology at a community college until the time comes when I can transfer to a 4-year California State University. When I do transfer, I will specifically be working towards a B.S. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (that is one major). However, there is also the option of transferring into the Environmental Studies program. This university (California State University--San Bernardino) does not offer an Environmental Science program, unfortunately. It is my understanding that Environmental Studies is the theoretical version of Environmental Science. …

I think you can break the school experience down into three parts: Information intake - Go to school, hear teacher talk, read/copy excerpts from textbooks and sheet handouts Revision - Ask teacher for clarification, discuss with friends, do homework, write notes and summaries, do further study at home Progress assessment - Get homework marked, do assessments, if you fall behind the teacher will tell you so you can get back on track, or you get held back/take extra classes/tutors or even fail the class I never did any science subjects at school, but after seeing some science documentaries I got kind of annoyed at how much I missed out, and wish I ha…

I am currently a college junior, and I have left the limited access program of my former major (nursing). I am fascinated by the sciences, and also appreciate the practical side that engineering offers. So biological engineering has become quite interesting to me. Biomedical is also a great interest, but I have heard a program openly admit that its students would very likely need a masters in biomedical to work as that type of engineer. I may very well end up majoring in biological for my undergrad, and choosing biomed as my masters, but I am not set on this at this time. My question in particular is: am I likely to require a masters to work as a biological engineer, j…

Hello everyone, I've noticed that the community of this board is nicely dispersed around the world. I have two main questions. First is the recommended Masters degrees that I can get into with a Bachelors in Biochemistry. As much as I love biochemistry, I cannot see myself only doing laboratory work, I would like job that has a bit of diversity to it. Inexperienced as I am, I'm not too sure where to focus my studies. I would also like to state my interest in medical research. With this, would anyone kindly state what are the options if I take a Masters in Biochemistry or if they know other interesting Master degrees. My second question, is looking for a good insti…

This has been bothering me for quite somtime I suffered brain damage as a result of blunt force trauma. I have an old school doctor who say's don't worry about it it's permanent etc. But still it bothers me significantly. Mostly memory is impaired, for awhile I woke up everyday not remembering the last, that part has corrected itself. I would just like to know where I stand now compared to the average. An unusual part of the MRI showed that I have an abnormally large (insert medical term here) "bridge" that connects the 2 halves of the brain. So maybe that'll help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone, I am new here So, having received an exclusively literary education I am particularly ignorant in mathematics and in science in general, but I would like to educate myself. The problem is that I don't know how to start. Can anyone suggest some websites, or books I can start with ?

What is the best way to get students excited about their science fair projects? They get very frustrated coming up with project ideas. I have tried a few sites such scienccefairprojectsstore.com to get ideas and books but I still can't get the students excited to be involved.

STEPHEN HAWKING The International Year of Astronomy was a year-long celebration of that field of science. It took place in 2009 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the first recorded astronomical observations with a telescope by Galileo and the publication in of Johannes Kepler's Astronomia Nova in the 17th century. By 2009 I had been collecting resources for the study of astronomy for four years. I had only come to any degree of what you might call a serious and systematic study of astronomy after my retirement in the years 1999 to 2005 from a working life of FT, PT and casual-volunteer work: 1955 to 2005. So it was that yesterday evening that I gobbled-…

Hi Guys, I've recently received my application acceptance to go and study Chemical Engineering at a local university for next year. www.up.ac.za (Its the BEng - Chemical Engineering course) I finished school last year and will be starting studies next year (I took a year off to really figure out what I want to study because I have many interests). Currently I'm working at a bank doing some IT support and logistics among other things, but I seem to find myself constantly wondering about and reading up on something scientifical whenever I have free time. My question is whether there are any free books or sources of information that I can start reading through th…

Personally, I'm not a big fan of America. As such, I've often considered leaving the U.S. and taking up residence as an academic elsewhere in the world. At the graduate level, when seeking graduate programs, how feasible is this? Is it practical to seek a foreign graduate school? Do foreign academic institutions often pay their graduate students to do research and teach? Do they waive tuition? I've often questioned what it would be like to do neuroscience in Spain, but I'm not too familiar with foreign lands and how their academic institutions work.

I work with emotionally disturbed teens ages 12-18 at a non-profit agency and as part of my duties I have been thrust into the position of advisor for their Science Club. Although I am well versed in the psychological field, my knowledge when it comes to Zoology is quite limited and since this is the current area of student interest I am reaching out for your help. I understand that this is not a request for homework assistance per se, but I am seeking ideas and information relevant to Zoology. Mainly, ideas about which areas of Zoology would be most beneficial for teens to learn as well as ideas on how to invoke the most interest out of the topic itself. …

I do not refer to dual programs in which we end up with an engineering degree followed by a post graduate degree. Can we do them separately, like B.E. Mechanical Engineering followed by MS in Physics ? Do Universities like MIT, Caltech accept people with a degree in engineering into their Postgraduate Pure Science programs?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if it's still possible for me to go back to school and get a PhD. I graduated from a public university with my bachelor's in biochem many years ago, and I've amassed 20+ years of industry experience as well as several years working in an academic lab. I enjoy the work I do, and I love performing research. I feel as though I've hit a sort of "glass ceiling" as far as job opportunities go, though. Is it at all feasible for me to get a PhD at this point in my life? Thanks, Hua-Ching Ni

Well, it's that time... the Physics GRE. Yikes. I'm very worried about this exam, but I need to start studying for it; I have a few books at home that I found as "recommended books" for practice questions, and I plan to do a whole bunch of questions... but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations or advice on how to study for the exam? It's just just solving problems, it's a timed exam, and I understand that it has a few goals that arent' just memorization... ? So.. PhD/Masters in Physics, you've been through it... how bad is it? any advice? how should I tackle this? Thanks! ~mooey

In popular science and works of fiction the only meaningful research and engineering comes from the top universities. This is very depressing for me as I'm only going to go to a middle league university (University of the West of England or De Monfront). Can anyone provide examples of people who have gone to a middle league university and who have contributed to human knowledge somehow? I'm not looking or an Albert Einstein, although it would be great, just someone who has come from an average background went to an average university and who's research was published or contributed to engineering some how. Examples of personal experience would be great too. Perhaps…
