Yet another ad hominem attack I see. So instead of either ignoring my posts or refuting the errors I pointed out to you, you instead participate in character assasination. That's pretty sad iNow. This post is a reply to iNow in this thread here. Posts split off because they are off-topic.

Found this to be interesting. The Simulation Argument (SA). Paper by Nick Bostrom: ARE YOU LIVING IN A COMPUTER SIMULATION? Abstract The conclusion sounds fun. Conclusion: Emphasis mine. Also, a nice blog entry about the SA. The dark side of the Simulation Argument And something for laughs. The old brain-in-a-vat argument, rehashed. Damned if it is true, damned if it is not. Have fun.

A couple of weeks ago I had my first surprise party held for me, and my friends did a terrible job of keeping it under wraps. However, I was even more terrible and didn't suspect a thing, even though a party was mentioned prior to the event . I thought I'd share some pics, no guesses for the theme.

I am trying to make an online website to tutor teens on subject and i need help. Its called Photonic MSN live School. I basically will teach (and other teachers will too) my subject via msn. I have a grade book on my computer to track grades. The class room will be in a chat room on msn. To turn in homework send me the homework file and i grade it. Tests will be every week. I will have power points to give to you to help you study. Tests will be taken online on my website. All questions will be response questions in your own words! I will then grade them and make sure there not from a website. I need teachers in... Math Biology Physics Spanish World Hist…

Cows are not fussy, It is an amazing sight to see a huge field with an apparently small amount of cows in it becoming an obviously large amount of cows gathering in a tight circle around a musician. I have seen this twice, once with a solo played on a horn and once with music consisting of a accordion\melodian and drums. There is a video online showing a cat sitting on a piano stool playing a note on the piano over and over again. paw up, paw down, etc... Supposedly dogs like slow music. An experiment to discover what music animals like could be constructed with an almost featureless room containing x triggers (what type of trigger, how many triggers and how l…

I found this neato realtime countdown to LHC's activation: http://www.lhcountdown.com/ 31 days, 7 hours to go! For those living in a cave: LHC is the Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator. It's hoped it will spot the Higgs boson, a hypothetical particle responsible for mass and predicted by the standard model. Observing the Higgs particle would be a major breakthrough in physics. It's also hoped that LHC will observe so-called "sparticles" which would provide proof of an idea called supersymmetry.

I just watched a weather ballon at night (they have a light, probably to warn planes) ascend into the air... It was mostly cloudy, the wind seemed 10-15 somewhat gusty at ground level, the ballon seemed at 2-5000 feet. There was a moderatly dim star in the backround close to the ballon, the swaying motion of the ballon (they ascend rather slowly) made it seem as though the star was moving... I looked at it a while, it seemed as though it was a maybe a satillite (it was not). To which stars and meteors are often the explination for UFO's this post is for those for bigfoot and UFO's, not a skeptics view, but how the eyes are known to be untrustworthy (star wars). …

I don't think there are too many MMORPG people on SFN but decided to make a thread about this anyway. I'm a rank 6 magus at the moment and things seem good so far, but I have yet to see anything that would make it especially good compared to WoW for example.

In another thread I wrote Dang. Not this time. The forecast for Ike hasn't been all that great. The projected landfall area has been moving northward all week, starting from south of Corpus Christi. It now looks like Ike will hit Houston 45 hours from now. The areas under mandatory evacuation yesterday might well be in the clear while the area likely to suffer has barely begun evacuating. The evacuations for Galveston County (where I live) as of Sept. 10 were voluntary and were limited to a few very flood prone areas. There were no evacuation notices for Harris County, period. Mandatory notices will come out this morning, but there won't be enough time to evacuate 1…

I notice that some of the self-proclaimed scientists that drop by to present their allegedly new science have no better than a primary school level of spelling and grammar, even with tools to help them get it right. For me such inattention to detail, and the laziness to care about the quality of their presentation, undermines the credibility of their ideas from the get go. How do you feel about it?

  19. Hi, My name is Dawson S and I'm a student from Australia. I'm currently completing a research project into the modern-day feasibility of a nuclear-powered aeroplane (as first suggested in the Cold War). I am to deliver this project in December at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminars where I will attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies. I am interested in poll results from different community groups and as such I have approached this forum. Please vote above and comment below should you have any strong opinions. I only require opinions; I already have all of the scientific data I require for my project (this is one of the last sections I am to complete). …

Hello. I co-edit a fan site for Fringe. The site is currently receiving a few thousand visitors daily. We'd like to add a real science column to the mix. The column will serve as a peer review for the science presented in the show, be it fringe, quasi, bad, etc., i.e. The column will be a great way to promote your personal science themed blog/writing (read: that's what's in it for you). To apply, submit a critique of the science of a current or past episode of Fringe complete with a closing signature (who you are, what you do, where you blog, etc.).

I'd like to propose a new scale of new age stupidity. The units of this scale will be referred to as "chakras", and the scale will range between 1 and 7, with 7 being the worst: 1 chakra: new age techniques which scientific studies actually confirm have a positive benefit (e.g. accupuncture), even if the new age reasoning for that benefit is completely without merit 2 chakras: attempting to study new age claims in a scientific context, or otherwise apply scientific methodology to them, even if the studies show them to be without merit 3 chakras: vague mentions of scientific terminology in the wrong context used to promote new age techniques 4 chakras: cla…

  23. I am making a survey about the religious development in current society. This survey will be made through a interpretation of a simple questionnaire which will deal with how religion is related to the social relations, the supernatural, the personal opinions and what are the consequences of the religious variety. The questions are in English Language and can be answered in the link below: Questionnaire - Data Survey - How is religious development in current society? I am opened to your suggestions, questions or any doubt that may come to mind. Mail: a.ladeira@ymail.com Thanks!

Does anyone have any suggestions on where we can find out about good painters and other residential remodel contractors?

  25. Hi there! I'm the local Lions Club projects director and have been tasked with replacing/updating/etc. the high school baseball stadium's PA system. This system is 20 years old, and really stinks! I'd like to chat with anyone that has experience or knowledge in this area. Most audio/amplifier/speaker forums don't wish to deal with this mundane subject. Any takers? Thnx!
