Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

Ball lightning is a small, roundish floating object usually 10-20 cm but can be 1-100 cm, glows roughly as bright as a lamp, is usually red, orange or yellow, lasts about 1 s to 1 min, and usually moves horizontally with little vertical motion. Roughly similar objects were produced in the lab, but no one is sure whether they bear any relation to "real" ball lightning. About 5% of the population claims to have seen ball lightning. Possible explanations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_lightning#Possible_scientific_explanations

If scientists are actually looking at black holes and worm holes as a means of moving from one galaxy or dimension to another; why not consider the act of instantaneous trancendental teleportation? I like the name and the idea, but unfortunately; we really don't know too much about it at the moment, even though nature in my opinion; has been doing it for billions of years.

  3. When an electron's Wave Function collapses, its average charge density is dramatically & suddenly shifted. Does this create any kind of Electromagnetic Pulse, or other such disturbance ? (Would that require the emission of photons ??) And, if you could get gazillions & gazillions of electrons, all to WF-collapse, all at once, could you create impressive EMP ??

Hey, this is my theory; I call it the ‘Adam and Eve’ theory. You may download the word doc here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/b403a25/n/life.docx Key - [God]: In this theory, ‘God’ is an action, or as some as you would say, energy. In this specific theory, the action is represented by opposites. The closest present and future, the step of time, one to another – it can be described as life’s flow. The only way to describe with numbers is in this manner: 1 – 2, or in this manner: 1 – 1. This is because if you literally take one thing, anything; and then add another, you’re making two. If you were to say, “But 4+4=8”; that’s true, but it’s also a lie, because I’m…

Suppose aliens have been visiting an inhabited planet, such as Earth. Then, where do you think the aliens would have come from (same planet at a different period, same solar system different planet, different solar system)? What might be their motivations? Might they be colonizing the asteroids in the system, would they bother coming from a different star system just to study alien life? Would they monitor other intelligent life, or not care?

I know, the topic is taboo. And it's probably perceptual to anyone above a third grade education, that the only person wanting to talk about the subject would be someone assimilating that third grade mentalityl. Daaaa!! Anyway, E.M.F. and Magnetism in practically any form above a lodestone can be changed to a new dynamic almost instantly. There are formula enough to fill a library, from the simplest application of D.C. theory, to the intricacies of a Cern Collider. Yet, other than the laws laid down by Sir Issac Newton, and a little mumbo-jumbo, gravity is an unquestionble entity. WHY?? Ubiquitous, yet inexplicable? What does gravity do other than supposedly keeping us f…

Ok, so many people have wondered "when did the universe start, and when will it end?" In my spare time, I jotted down and outlined a theory, which started as a random dream, but it seemed unique enought that I should share it with this forum: Time is often thought to be linear and mono-directional; however, what if we suppose that the entire universe followed time and space in a circle? This Theory explains the idea that the universe could repeat itself in a never-ending cycle, like a clock or a wheel. The diagram shows the beginning and end of each “cycle” and the time in between, where each and every moment is different from that of the last “cycle”,…

Personally, I really wish you hadn't taken this guys "Adan & Eve" thing off the forum. Frustration is probably the best timbre to sanity that I can think of. After venting, most folks go back to a more subtle way of life. Just think of his misgiving as a modertion of thinking?? What else can I say?

This is my new theory. Please do not steal it. I will be famous. Spinning bodies such as the earth and sun create magnetic fields around them. Well galaxies spin much faster and are much larger than stars and planets so they must create very large, powerful magnetic fields around them. These magnetic fields repel away from each other thus causing galaxies to move away from each other. When all of the galaxies were clumped close together after the big bang they all repelled away from each other and thats why all the galaxies are currently moving away from each other. There you have it. Enjoy

This isn't a true theory, just something I am postulating on some recent musings. I welcome discussion or dis-proofs of the idea, and keep in mind my knowledge of big-bang etc is pretty surface level so this may in fact already kind of exist in a way. Also this is only something I recently thought of, so theres likely to be holes all through it. That out of the way - the basic precept is this. Chemical evolution is a provable thing that has been studied and shown by others. We are essentially chemical beings. All of our interactions are chemical based, the synthesis of energy which we use to exist is, a chemical reaction. All of our environment is ch…

  12. Hey! I'm not sure if this thread is in the right forum or what. If not, will you please move it to the right forum please? I also want to tell you that this is only a thought. Not any scientific prove. I am only seventeen years old, and I am going in 10th grade, so I don't have any education in science/physics. So please don't call me a crazy scientist, even though how crazy these things sound. I am only posting this to get some answers on my speculations Is it really impossible to travel faster than light? In order to make matter escape from the event horizon at a black hole, then the matter MUST have a speed faster than light. A black hole …

  13. I figure a community devoted to discussing far-reaching theories of the universe could help a poor, deprived mind such as my own in a thought experiment pursuant to my goal of writing a novel. I'm hoping that it's okay with this forum's moderators that I'm fishing for ideas that I intend to steal shamelessly and use in my writings. If this somehow violates forum rules, please feel free to lock off this topic and I shall pursue it no more--no hard feelings! Last thing I wish to do is step all over the purpose of a dedicated community Provided that I'm allowed this largesse, here's my thought experiment: what if we all lived in an alternate universe where monopoles had…

  14. Speculation: Hubble's Law is the natural result of observation from an accelerated point of vue combined with the delay imposed by the constancy of the Speed Of Light. In order to explain the concept, I will take a simple example of the combination of acceleration with delay. You are sitting in your car, waiting at the red light. There is a car in front of you, and another car behind you. At T=0, the red light turns green, and the first car starts. After one second, you start. After 2 seconds, the car behind you starts. The one second gap is the delay. What are you observing? The car in front of you accelerates. You are accelerating too, but the gap of one…

To distinguish the Philosophical context of ignorance as opposed to stupidity, a person must first ask themselves two questions: Can I spell both correctly, and do I know the difference? Sadly, most of us don't! In a constant endeavor to expand mans knowledge of his environment and the world in general, scientist's have made amazing revelations over the past centuries by re-discovering or uncovering diverse new fields. While medicine, engineering, and the physics of inner and outer space command and demand the largest portion of this pie, each field must be constantly reevaluated to bring us into better prospective. Our universe is one such topic. During a brief …

Is there such a thing as a "Continuum" in relationship to our universe? I've read that before the universe began, there was absolutely nothing. Having went through a myriad of text and the profundity of great men, I'm still under qualified, totally lost and amazed by everything I read. Are the continuum and universe the same thing, two entirely different entities, or does the continuum exist at all? While I do have my thoughts on the subject, it would be nice looking at some plausible answers from some other corner??

Yep! I've used the the dirty word "Magnetism" and will probably pay the price for doing so. Having put that on the front burner, let me commence to begin to start! To me, magnetism is the only true and intrensic force in our entire universe. Can it be proven? Absolutely not! If it had been, or could be; there would be no reason for making this assumption. I'm not trying to step on the toes of Physcists, Astronomers or Accredited Theorist. How could I when all I have to offer is a gut feeling and a thought. Magnetism in one form or another is the backbone of our world. But to my way of thinking, today there would be no existance of anything, without magnetism. Man himself,…

The earth is still shrinking just like it always has as it’s cooled, and was at the time of the great Noahic flood when it rained for forty days and forty nights for the waters to rise to a height of 15 cubits or 27 feet, and cover all the high hills. What this reveals is that before the flood, the earth’s crust was relatively very smooth. There was dry ground and “seas”, but that doesn’t mean they appeared anything like they do today. There was no Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, no Mt. McKinley, and no Alps. With the falling deluge of water, which is a very efficient cooling agent, the earth’s crust would cool very rapidly. The very weight of the water, 23 million tons p…

  19. In his famous Life in the Universe lecture, Stephen Hawking postulated that earth has not been visited by aliens, and that "any visits by aliens, would be much more obvious, and probably also, much more unpleasant." Why? I wonder, that if an alien species had evolved to the point of expanding interstellarly, would they not presumably be intelligent enough to realize the sort of chaos that an "obvious" appearance would cause? Even if the ET's were looking to wipe out our species and colonize our planet, humans faced with an "unpleasant" alien encounter would most likely react nuclearly, and destroy themselves and possibly earth. Its in the best int…

  20. Why doesn't the following formula work, for fully relativistic Quantum phenomena ? It seems to have the correct Classical, low-energy, expansion: [math]\left( E - V \right)^2 = (m c^2)^2 + (p c)^2[/math] For, when V << E, pc << mc2, the aforesaid formula forms the familiar Classical equation. Seeking the square-root: [math]E - V = (m c^2) \sqrt{1 + \frac{p}{mc}^2 } \approx (m c^2) + \frac{p^2}{2 m} [/math] [math]E \approx (m c^2) + \frac{p^2}{2 m} + V[/math] This, in turn, reduces to the regular Schrodinger Wave Equation with the standard substitutions (Hughes. Elementary Particles, pg. 48): [math] \hat{E} \to i \hbar \par…

  22. Mod note: moved from this thread How's this for taking libertys ; I think one problem that exists for any thinker is knowing how best to think about special relativity . I'm not sure it helps by imagining spacetime as an interlinked fabric , but rather , like mass and energy , 3d space and time is the same thing . It assumes another way of looking at light . That EM is in a constant state of balance that exists in every point in space . That creating interference in energy/EM can propagate a luminous wave (Luminous because we can see the interference) . To move in the direction of time is to be motionless . Time is motion . Taking energy from time will take en…

  24. Hey! I have no idea where to put this thread. Sorry if it is the wrong place, if it is, then please remove it to the right forum, thanks Let start: I have come up with a theory about how our universe was created. Not the big bang, but how the big bang was created. I have even found the answer to the question why our universe is accelerating using this theory. I have also discovered if we live in a multiverse or not. But I just don't have the skills to investigate the theory further, as I dont have any education in science or physics. I have made a 6 minute long video that describes my theory broadly, which I hope you will take a look at and examinate. It mus…

I didn't explain in an elegant and detailed way before, I just plastered the page with senseless drivel that made no sense. I'm going to try and explain what a Harmonic Opposite is, as I used it in my last thread many times, in a confusing manner. A harmonic opposite can only be explained if you relate it to life. It cannot be explained with English word, as many words are man-made, theatrical, not-real. If I say to you: E=MC2, you immediately think energy. The equation is here to simplify a bigger question. I don't think it's possible to describe it in any way but using numbers and reality. Below I'll write a key, putting factors to numbers: 1 = Man 2 = Wom…
