Ethics

Discussion of ethical topics relating to science, medicine, religion, and so on.

I don't really think a concise definition is possible, but I'd like to hear some ideas. I say this because I believe the most profound ethical dillemas of this century will revolve about this question. When it comes up: Slavery/racism: One of the questions surrounding the ethics of slavery was about whether blacks and whites were fundamentally different and fit for different roles. Abortion: This debate is all about basic disagreements over when is the beginning of a human being with the rights guaranteed thereof. Scientifically, it's an arbitrary distinction. Ethically, it makes all the difference in the world. Animal rights: What about being human makes huma…

Thanks for any responses I get please state whether your male or female by typing (m) or (f) next to your response and if I'm lucky enough your age too thanks a million. I hope to get at least 100 responses through online responses and in person responses. Teri

Every animals have feelings and want to live their lives without pain. Have scientist ever thought about its? Most researchers only think about how they can become famous and recognized by discovering new drugs that will help prevent and cure humans from deadly diseases. Should they experiment their new drug on something that will give them the same results as animals? Is this a time for them to stop animal testing? Yes, researcher should stop making animals suffer from drugs testing. Federal agencies have estimated that the number of animals in research is as high as 17 million to 22 million each year. Those animals include 50,000 cats, 61,000 primates, 180,000 dogs,…

Yesterday, the Brazilian Supreme Court accepted the embrionary stem cells research as legal. And again, the Science wins... and I can't understand why all those religious groups can't figure out that we're not killing people, just saving them from death. More one point to Brazil

Hi, I am currently working on a research paper concerning the subject of cloning. I would like to interview an expert on the topic for my paper. What is your view on cloning (humans, animals) in a few words? What are the advantages of cloning? Disadvantages? Could a cloned human be considered human? What are the scientific reasons to stop or continue cloning? Moral Reasons? Thank You In Advance Mark

Euthanasia is assisted suicide. There are two main types: Active Euthanasia: This means taking something out that is keeping them alive (eg feeding tube). Passive Euthanasia: This means turning off something that is keeping them alive (eg a live support machine). Should it be legalised? Leave your views.

that they are not doing the same as meat eaters and killing a life? Who says the corn wants to be cultivated in a square field? Then reaped to be cut down and eaten? Why can't its seed be left to create more corn? Who says the the carrot wants its food reserve to be traken from it for its leaves to wither and die? Yes there are cruel means of killing animals used and they SHOULDN'T torture them to kill them or house them in bad conditions.....but also plants are living things too and when you cut them they bleed-maybe not blood but their equivalent of a circulatory system fluid. So in the end who really cares more about nature and loves plants/animals? ne…

I heard this woman talking on the radio, and I liked what she was saying against [implantable] RFID chips. Her argument was based on the slippery slope [fallacy] but if history has shown us anything, it's that this argument can come to pass. I was even considering donating to her website, http://www.antichip.com, until she started talking about how implatable RFID chips is the Mark of the Beast talked about in the bible... ugg. Anyway, on their website, they have links showing RFID implanted chips causing cancer in animals. I can't tell if the research is legit however. But, it is, it could add an interesting angle to the debate.

I read an interesting thread on another forum about Mike Vick going to jail The threadstarter said that meat industry workers should also go to jail, because their livestock were also treated cruelly by them. What do you guys think? How are the animals treated on the big ranches? People on the other forum said they are being treated badly, but I cannot trust those people.

A private members bill legalising the creation of human embryos by somatic cell transfer passed through Parliament yesterday, and will come into effect in six months. Embryos must be terminated within fourteen days. The bill overturns a previous ban on cloning. Interesting, the leader of the government and the opposition both opposed the bill, with senior ministers from both parties in disagreement. Hey, I have a donator's card; When I die, whatever organs are good enough to save people's lives or improve their lives, would be taken for that purpose. However, I recently heard of a law that exists in my country - and not sure if it exists in the US/Europe as well. Regardless of the little 'donator' card I signed on, my family has the last word. now, my family is open minded and agrees with my decision, so if anything happens and they're left after me, they'll respect my wishes. However.. do you think it's ethical for a family to go against their family-member's decision as to donation of organs? I mean.. what is the donator-card FOR if not to make your…

Which Ethical Theory gives the morally best action to take in this scenario? A terrorist threatens to explode bombs in crowded areas of LA and SF (killing possibly tens or even hundreds of thousands of people). The authorities have a video link to him. His unrealistic demands are- a presidential announcement of an immediate withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, and immediate imposition by Congress of sharia law in the US. His only son is in the US and in federal custody, but says he knows nothing of his fathers plans. You are in charge of Him, and a CIA official suggests opening a video link showing the terrorist his son being tortured until he reveals the bomb lo…

I was wondering, should there be legal implications to using nootropes in the future for exams or even for study and revision, as there are for professional athletes who use performance enhancing drugs e.g anabolic steroids, Beta 2 agonists, hCG et.c As we're now approaching the distribution of such pharmaceuticals (I believe in the next couple of years...maybe sooner) do you think students who decide to use such methods have an unfair advantage...or do you believe that whatever makes you more intelligent (improve cognitive ability, improve memory et.c) has to be good. Do you think credibility would be an issue if someone were to use a chemical to improve their …

I have talked with animal rights activists in the past, and the reason I always get is that we should protect things that suffer. What I don't understand is that it is proven that fetuses feel pain in the third trimester---see the link below. It is a systematic study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, detailing the finding that fetuses feel pain at 20 weeks. Why is it, then, that people like PETA aren't also campaigning for late term abortion bans? http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/294/8/947

Instead of wasting time on arguing about the use of stem cells, why don't people try and find methods to reverse the specialization of differentiated cells. That would give us access to stem cells without the need for cloning embryos. What's the big deal. All you have to do is determine the chromosome structure, protein - content and localization of a stem cell. Then you just induce some changes on whatever cells you have at hand and there you go. Its so easy you know.

i was sifting threough my letterbox today and i found a greenpeace (human rights/animal rights group) ad and magazine about (u mightve seen this on the news) the Japanese so-called "scientific reasearch on whales" and in fact most of the "scientific reasearch on whales" end up on peoples dinner plates. this practice is illegal but the jabs still do it. I personally think as a SPCA (society for the prevention of creulty to animals) volunteer that what the jabs are doing is extremeely wrong and disgusting.

To avoid further derailing a thread in the politics forum, I felt this thread should be split. To begin, let me post a definition of blastocyst (from WordNet): The basic question is: does a blastocyst meet the criteria of a human being? The best way to argue this point, I believe, is to enumerate the core criteria which comprise a human being, then use that to argue the point. Some things to keep in mind are various things which would comprise parts of a human being but not human beings themselves. An example would be a biopsy. Unless your argument is that a biopsy is a human being, your criteria should no be so vague as to be unable to distinguish th…

I'm curious: to those who are opposed/not entirely happy with animal testing, what are your oppinions on animal-trials of drugs that are intended for vetinary use, or have dual human-(insert other speiceis here) use? eg, if you think it's wrong to give a rat a drug, and then kill & dissect it to measure the biodistribution of afformentioned drug, in order to test a potential canser-treatment drug to be used in humans, what are your thoughts on doing the same to develop an anti-cancer drug intended to be given to rats? what about using, say, lab-rats to develop a drug intended to treat horses?

  21. " Specialists call for legalised trade in kidneys David Spurgeon As patients die while waiting for transplantations and the sale of organs on the black market keeps growing, a US nephrologist and his daughter, a transplantation specialist, have argued for legalising the voluntary sale and purchase of kidneys. In an article published online on 15 February in Kidney International the authors quote the US Department of Health and Human Services as saying, “Each day, about 74 people receive an organ transplant. However, 17 people die each day waiting for transplants that cannot take place because of the shortage of donated organs” (http://www.kidney-international…

Greetings, Recently I have viewed several proportionally small clips, from a rather large movie entitled "Jackass 2". Upon watching these clips I realized that the ethics were going far, and unfairly out of bounds for the native animals. Animals, just like human beings have rights, and they need to be stood up for. The acts I will list below are just a few, because I would never demean myself enough to rent or buy this movie. My friend showed me these clips upon http://www.youtube.com. There is a scene which shows, and depicts a man commiting the masturbation of a male horse (by the man), until the point of ejaculation, which is put into a cup and drank by a hu…

Hi, I am a male, 18 years old and I had some few questions regarding my moles: First I will tell you my story. When I went to the dermatologist for a mole removal, they told me that they can remove my moles perminately. I was very happy, yet something wasn't right. I can tell when people lie and when they tell the truth. They seemed very fake. As if they were robots. So I spent nearly 1000 dollars after a 4 time treatment. First, they cutt the shaped part of the mole. Then, they used laser to remove it. I admitt, it has gotten lighter. Yet not only it is not gone, but it keeps growing more and more. What a waste of time and money. I is really possible to remove a mole pe…
