Computer Science

  1. I know that I'm definitely interested in science but I don't can't narrow it down to an exact category of science that I want to study. I've been interested in computer science and astronomy my whole life. I've got good math and science skills so I'm not really limited to what I would want to study. I know that astronomy is a wide field that can encompass computer science majors but that's not really the part of astronomy I'm interested in. Do computer science majors/jobs use a lot of advanced math such as physics and calculus used in astronomy? There's also dilemmas such as which one does the world need more right now? Astronomers or computer scientists? I don't …

Hi, I'm finding it hard understanding a certain aspect of the huffman code. Basically what I'm trying to find out is, how would I know if a code is uniquely decodable? For example if I have a set of symbols with different code words for each symbol, which would be uniquely decodable? Thanks.

How could we teach HTM based robotics to move? It seems simple to teach them that they have limbs and to know the location of said limbs. However, I don't know how we could teach them how to use them. Would we need random signals uploaded on the machine to generate random movements for it to learn? Would we need to just stimulate the limbs externally?

Sorry my thread title isn't very specific. I'm working on a table in Access, here's an extract: I want to eliminate duplicates in the Module_Code field, and merge the data in the UserText1 field, so I end up with something like this: Any suggestions on a query or series of queries that could do this would be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi: My vintage dream PC contains the most advanced motherboard [in terms of ability to handle the highest processor speed of it's type as well as maximum RAM capability] that contains the most amount of 16-bit ISA slots but does not contain any PCI or any other non-ISA slots either. It does not even have any EISA or SCSI. Here are the other specs of my vintage dream PC 1. OSes: Windows 3.0 [not 3.0a, just 3.0] and the most advanced version of DOS fully compatible with the other softwares/hardwares in my vintage dream PC. 2. Sound Card: Most advanced version of SB16 ISA [all accessories -- such as speakers included] with Creative Music FM Synth but without …

I know there has been a lot debate on the topic, due to the Mac smear commercials, but which is ultimately better, Macs or PC's. I've asked the question to many, however I've found that their answers are laden with biases and personal statistics, so I've decided to go to those who have experience instead. Some of my family friends are programmers, and they've told me that in their (collective) 20 years, they've never had companies that use Macintosh computers, despite the fact that they are believed to be better. Secondly, there are so few viruses for macintosh computers, in contrast to PC's: why is this? Any thoughts?

I need help with the following true or false questions: 1.The Intersection of two context-free languages is recursive. 2.For an arbitrary regular language L, the set of all strings in L that have even length forms a language that is not recursive. 3. If L is accepted by a PDA then L is accepted by a PDA that has no compatible transitions. For clarification purposes, recursive means a that a turing machine can decide the language. Recursive enumerable means that a turing machine can recognize the language. PDA = push down automaton. Here's what i think: 1. false, since the intersection of 2 context free languages is not necessarily context free since CFLs are…

I didn't find anything on the forums via search, so I'll post it - it's worth checking out for sure: http://www.emotiv.com/ The "demo" videos are pretty interesting - it basically reads brainwave patterns to identify facial expressions, emotions, and even more complex things like detecting hand motion via the sensors over the user's head. They say they'll sell units for about $300 each, which is pretty cheap considering the technology. I wonder what Moore's law can do with this over the next few years. What are all your thoughts?

  16. Stanford University is running its introductory course on iPhone application development in an open format, available for free to the public via iTunes University. To access it just download iTunes and click on the "iTunes U" link on the main store page. From there you can't miss it; there are banners for it everywhere. The course is taught by two Apple employees from the iPhone dev team, and covers all the basics of interface design and data management and display, but not OpenGL/game stuff. You build a couple of applications including a Twitter client. Here's a link to the class home page, which includes a link that you can use to connect to the iTunes site…

In the Science Channel Documentary 2057, they talk about cars that drive themselves. They say that they're still working out the kinks, but I find that to be hard to believe, mostly because I've seen (and even operated on a small scale) this technology first-hand. It's called an AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle). When I was in high school, I took a class called Technology Discovery, and one unit was on the AGV. Its course and work schedule are literally as easy to edit as the contents of a spreadhseet. If it finds a barrier, it will take a detour. Also, you can program it to stay on a dark black line (a "road" of sorts). The only problem is that this technology is …

I recently encountered the problem of fixing the background of my scene I want my background to have bisecting lines (axes in a scene) there's a built in function scene+line that solves this it's (scene+line s x0 y0 x1 y1 c) → Scene s : Scene x0 : number? y0 : number? x1 : number? y1 : number? c : Color I honestly don't know what the x0 y0 x1 and y1 must be

does anyone here use this technology in their laptop or know anyone, and what in your opinion is the best deal? and roughly how does it work? I`m thinking of getting Anywhere Internet for my laptop, and am looking at either PCMCIA cards or a USB dongle to do this with, I`m leaning towards the PCMCIA as there`s little in way of sticky-outy bits that can break off. as far as I can tell the card works like a modem using most of the Active bits found inside a mobile phone, and you need to stick a SIM card in it. beyond that I`m totally lost:confused: anyone?

Interesting article in Ars Technica about the arguments taking place between the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Apple Computer as part of the ongoing appeal and request-for-exception process that exists with the government as part of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/02/apple-sides-with-mpaa-riaa-against-drm-circumvention.ars Some interesting bits: The article goes on to talk about both sides of the argument. This point from von Lohmann was particularly interesting: Interesting stuff. I didn't realize Apple was attempting to have it held that jailbreaking an iPhone is illegal.

After doing a little bit of war driving with a Nintendo DS, Another security tip (other than the conventional ones) occurred to me. in and amongst the list of SSID`s that I`d collected there were some that no real hacker (unless desperate) would even bother looking at, namely Printers and other Wi-Fi peripherals. most have a company install their Broadband and never really think twice about the factory defaults that any hacker knows the passwords to and can recognise the SSID at 100 paces blindfolded! (I use chemical formulas for all of mine, Case sensitive and includes numbers). So... opening your browser and entering 192.168.*.* (you`ll have to mess about with…
