I`ve finaly fixed that old 486 laptop and have it working off a car battery now. it has no HDD, only the HD (1.22mb) floppy drive. I rem when I was an educational S/ware writer WAY BACK, an we had a room full of 286 machines. I used to uses QBASIC to write in. All would fit just great on a 720k floppy as well as the program! any idea where I can still get this from (for free if possible as I`m sure there`s no call for it now)? or even if it still exists? and if not QBASIC then any other BASIC that will allow parallel port access with (2 or 3)86 type overheads, and fits on a single floppy. My PC is acting wierd these days. I've got AMD 2000+, 2x 256MB DDR Hynix, a normal 300 W SMPS, GeForce 4 MX 420(64MB DDR) at 4x, AC'97, Chipset is 7VTXE, Seagate 20GB Drive. Now the problem is, when I set the bus frequency of the RAM or the Processor to 133MHz(either of the two), the PC fails to start. I mean there's no display on the monitor. But when they're @ 100MHz the PC works fine. So, now I'm not able to use either my processor (133Mhz x 12.5 but now running at 100MHz @12.5), or my RAM (133MHz x 2 but running at 100Mhz x 2) to full potential. Is it the motherboard problem, or is it the SMPS problem. I'm suspecting the SMPS, but would like someone to guide …

I recently had some problems with my bootloader orginating from a borken Cd reader...my other writer, no matter what I did, was never recognized by BIOS...so I installed a bootloader on a floppy and, a word of advice, never isntall the rpm for smartboot.... w/o knowing my HD bootloader was replaced with a hardware bootloader, I installed FreeBSD. To my suprize I was not able to boot into it. Nor was I able to get back in FC3! I read up on GRUB then used the files still in my boot partition to create a floppy boot that got me in fedora. From there I dlaoded the latest GRUB, copied all my previous GRUB files, installed it, copied old image, devices, and boot settings…

These came from another forum, where they were probably just stolen from somewhere else... In firefox, type "about:config" in the address bar to bring up the configuration editor. Adjust these values accordingly. For boolean types just doubling clicking will switch them. For integers, you will be prompted to enter a value. Note that these are meant for broadband users. browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true network.http.max-connections – 48 network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16 network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8 network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4 network.http.pipelining – true network.http.pipelining.maxr…

I have a question. In really complex games such as Halo or whatever, how do they program it to do what it does? I mean, how do you get the computer to manipulate the 3D objects and such, with lighting and all that? What language do they use? Etc. The only games I can make are on my calculator in BASIC. I only know a bit of C++ as well.

It has long been a debated subject; whether to leave your computer on or off. There are many different views and research on the matter and to be honest, it is not proven whether it is best to leave your computer on when not being used for long amounts of time or turning it off. If you leave it on you are preventing the possibly taxing start-up procedure and are stopping the HDD (hard drive disk) from having to be stopped and started. However leaving your computer on can ware out the motor for the HDD So... what do you think; is it best to leave your computer on or turn it off?

so, i just got some surround sound (5.1) speakers for my TV, it can play DVDs, CD-RW, MP3s and all stuff like that, which means i can write music files i make on the surround sound.... but how do i make a file on my computer that uses surround sound to its full effect? like, how can i make a music file which will play in each of the 5 speakers seperately? you know in cinemas with surround sound it sometimes does a sound 'shooting around you', each speaker one at a time flowing from one to the next, that sounds really cool, how can i make one of those? once it's made i just burn it to a CD-RW and play it!

I can nolonger install hardware on my Compaq Presiaro PC, because of an 'I/O thread exit, or application request' I figured it might be something to do with windows firewall, but that was turned off. I sort of have Norton Firewall (It claims im at the end of the trial and shoud register and that it is disabled, but now and again it promts me due to a programme accesing the internet etc). Any ideas how to solve this?

I have an old IDE cable at home (approx 13 years old), so you can tell this is an old computer component! what i wanna know is will this 13 year old IDE cable be as fast and reliable as modern IDE cables? old = faster: in the older days they would have produced more quality stuff, where as now they just want the cheapest new = faster: new technology = faster the same: IDE is a fixed speed and therefore it wont have changed. please state in your posts whethere this is something you 'think', have 'heard' (if so where from, how reliable?) or something you 'know' (and is therefore 100% certainly true)

recently i went on a website which had a pop-up message saying: "click yes to enter the website" however the only option was to click 'ok' so obviously you couldnt enter the website, possibly it was done by refreshing the page each time 'ok' was clicked, but it wasnt just the same 'once off' pop up copy and pasted loads of times because i held down enter for a while, and the message just kept poping up, and there was no way it was copy and pasted THAT many times, so what is the HTML code for this pop up which yuo cant get rid of?

by 'XP Pro(f)' i mean windows XP proffessional. what are the differences between XP pro and XP home... i have heard of a few things you can do on Pro, however i have always been able to do them on home (which i have), can someone who has pro (sayo!) please state a task which i could not do at all on home? i mean for example, yesterday, i was reading about network connection settings (suspicious after that hack thread???) anyway, it said "on xp prof go to x, do y and z will happen so long as both you and the other networked comp is on XP pro" both my comps are XP home and it worked fine all the same! which made me wonder, hence this thread.

here's a good tutorial of how to change your XP (home or prof) boot screen, for those who dont know a boot screen is, you know why you turn on your computer it says windows XP with the logo? well that is the XP boot screen... now you can customise this screen by following a tutorial on this site: http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/xpbootlogo/ it is intended for XP prof, although works fine with home (read it, it says!). the program needed is resource hacker, a totaly safe, legal tool - i swear! and you will need something like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop to make the image, you need one of these as you need to import the palet (again, read the site). what i did…

I've been getting a lot of notices lately like this one: This e-mail contained an infection which could not be repaired. This mail is generated by your mail system automatically for processing reasons only. Please ignore it. Thank you, Your ISP Then a bunch of email routing info follows. It always gives me the email address of the person who supposedly sent the email, but I know my ISP wouldn't send a notice with the signature, "Thank you, Your ISP" Is this just some kind of hit to see if I open it or not?

Hey! My parents purchased a new computer recently. It came with a full version of Microsoft Works 7 and a 60 day trial of Microsoft Office Student and Home Edition. I have been previously using the Microsoft Works Suite 2001. My main use for computer, school-wise, is writing essays on the Word Processor, and I may use spreadsheets (my Physics class will use them) and PowerPoint for class presentations. As well, my mother uses email and my bother use word processor and occasionally the spreadsheet. Should I use Works, use Office for now and get to full edition later or use the (free) OpenOffice.org suite I heard about?

  22. Hello People!! Please Help!! I've just came up with an idea of making a noise cancelling application and I've no idea where to start. Basically (Well, it probably quite hard to do), what I want to do is, retrieve input from the microphone IN and inverse the wave of the input (Mic) and play it back to the speaker so that it could cancel out the noise from the surroundings of my Headphones(Speakers). Any Ideas? Also, Could somebody tell me if this is right, if inversing the wave really does cancel out the noise?
