  1. I want to try to connect to my local PC from a remote location through the telephone. So on the local PC, I go about creating a new connection (Windows XP) that accepts "incoming calls" and a given guest user that I will be when I call from the remote site. It seems to work somewhat (I hear the modem work when I call the phone number to which my local PC is connected to after I pick up the phone) but I don't undestand: 1) When the phone rings at the local PC and I pick it up, is the local PC ready to negotiate with the remote one ? 1) will I be given a kind of login screen on the remote PC when I dial in to enter my guest username and password? 2) what app…

I was talking with the comp lab director at my school about my recent upgrade to a bigger but slower Hd and wanted to pass on a tip. Have the OS on a small fast HD and everything elce on another drive. This will increase the speed of ALL computer operations and will allow the computer to access OS files without inerupting other HD related tasks. It will reduce conflits and gliches due to seeking an OS file and another file.

Pre-ramble (skip if you're lazy) The last thread I made on port forwarding was asking how to do it, anyway, that was a while ago and I've come a long way since then! I've been forwarding some ports and I came across a interesting feature of software/hardware firewall pairing. Norton internet security 2005 (NIS) allows you to give programs permission rules, you cannot open up a specific port. My router allows you to open up specific ports. This is good for security as your software firewall allows only pre selected programs to run and just in case one of those is hijacked or corrupt the router will only allow pre selected ports. Meaning that only pre selec…

  10. Is a p2p internetwork a new kind of internet ? Here is an interesting problem I came across and sent in another forum. There are some responses, but it is intruiging. This may be a new internet invention, I am really not sure because I don't know the technology well. I have a question regarding peer to peer networks. I saw that if you have a p2p client like emule or imesh you can access all the information shared on that particular client's network. So you can access imesh's network if you have imesh OR emule's network if you have emule. But these two distinct networks are seperated and not communicating. So if I find a song on emule, that song is not being sh…

I read that the LCD screens in laptop computers contain phosphor powder, mercury, and other chemicals. What are the chances of this stuff leaking out? Do you think it could be a health or environmental hazard? Everyone thought CFCs were safe until they started leaking out of things and destroying the ozone layer. I know that phosphor powder and mercury are toxic, but what are the chances of them escaping from my computer? Would I notice if they start leaking out?

I was coming up with a way to make a file (with no particular extension) as secure as possible. Password protect computer (start-up, BIOS, username) Password protect file (if possible) Remove extension so they'd have to know or guess the extension before they could open it. Place file in one of those 'computer safe' programs. Make it hidden in attributes (spose it might fall my grandma!) Split the file into several smaller files, you'd need the correct file compiler to rebuild it. Now an obvious one it to encrypt it... but how could I go about encrypting a file with no extension? (or I suppose I could add an extension before encryption), in which case what …

I was wondering if you needed a screensaver for LCD monitors, like the ones in laptop computers? My school had some of the old CRT monitors, and they didn't have any screensavers on them. Now the desktop is actually burned into the screen. If you load an application, you can still see the desktop in the background. Could this happen to LCD monitors too?

Hi! Do any of you know how to automatically number the names of output files when programming with C++? I mean, if I was using a loop, and wanted to output some text into a .txt file, how can I make it name the first one 1.txt. Then when it goes back into the loop, create a new file called 2.txt, and keep going until I'm done running the loop? Please let me know! Thanks! ~Clara

Litereally, I cannot edit the current ones, add a new scheme, there are no currently set schemes, I cannot save as or anything... you can see I cannot edit the current settings for it and if I click 'save as' or 'delete' nothing happens. I have reinstalled windows since I first noticed this problem and it didn't go away which is strange, if I reinstalled XP home again it'd possibly sort the problem, but does anyone know what causes it? It's a strange problem... any ideas as to why this has happened?

I'm learning recursive functions in my AP computer science class (which is taught in JAVA) and my teacher gave this question to us as an extra. public static void Mystery (int n) { if (n < 0) return n; System.out.println(n); Mystery(n-1); System.out.println(n); } What I understand from it is that it takes the number (n) and reduces it until it gets to zero. It prints it before it subtracts 1 from it. So it would look like this (if I entered 4): 4 3 2 1 0 But, he said that that final product should look like this: 4321001234 What I don't understand is how it adds to 'n': I see that it prints 'n', then reduces it by 1, th…

Ok, so my site doesn't have very good uptime. And especially recently and in the next couple days...it has been and will be down for hours at a time as i configure the same /mnt.../ to each OS, install some, fix gentoo, and reinstall FC3, FreeBSD. Get each OS to say Operating System: XXX at my site...lots of work on my computer. Anyway. Even when google indexes my site, it still puts me under a couple forums I post at. I know that when I had my domain, 1veedo.com, it was always the very first w/ "1veedo". Is it possible that having bad downtime effects how well google rates you? Or is it just because I have a secondary domain now? I dobt google would rate you o…

My brother just bought a wireless router and we're trying to get it hooked up and working. However, whenever we use the router, the internet speed drops to like 1kb/s. Webpages start loading, but they never finish, which means that the speed is dropping to near 0 kb/s. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting this? I have roadrunner cable. I checked the cables and they seem to be fine. It seems to be a problem between the router and the cable modem.

  21. I've got an interesting problem here which I can't seem to be able to solve myself. I have my laptop (xp) connected to my main desktop pc (xp) which uses cable internet connection which is also shared. Now I also enabled both display icons in the taskbar (when LAN is connected and Internet Gateway). The Internet Gateway icon works ok, shows activity only when I use internet, however, the LAN icon keeps reporting activity non-stop; sending and receiving packets all the time! I am having a suspicion as if it is also using Internet as well and therefore wasting my bandwidth into something I'm not aware of. I tried ending processes from the task bar and I noticed the …

It is pretty unusual, because that file is just less than 1 meba byte, which is usually pretty fast for my computer to run The most obssessive part is that it takes like hours to do a quick rendering before I feel really anoyed and shut down the computer.... Can any one plz see my file and point out where is the problem?? thx a million for ANY help! ps. my computer is a p4 1.7 GHZ with 630 MB of RAM

I should really be posting this on some computer help forum, but i am too lazy to sign up. Does anyone know how i can get Windows Media Player 9 to work on my Mozilla Firefox browser? It works on Internet Explorer, but when i try to watch videos in Firefox it says "Windows Media Player 9 not detected" or something about downloading a plugin. Its really annoying because Firefox is my only browser i can use, IE has too many popups even though i use Spybot Search&Destroy and Spyware Doctor.
