My PC is under spec, and running xp and firefox is a bit of a strain for it, but i maniged to tweak it so it runs ok and has been doing so for the past year. Recently, however, it has been slowing right down: Espescially when i use firefox. Bear in mind that this PC doesnt have the recomended specs to run XP (which is what its running), and that firefox is a hefty program, but still, its never been this bad. Opening up firefox takes for ever, as does going from one site to another. Even using the firefox scroll bar causes slowdown: if i open up task manager and then use firefox's scroll bar to look further down the page, i can see in taskmanager that firefox's C…

I have worked inside many computers, and all of them have a cooling fan for the CPU. There is normally a plastic piece that directs the warm air from the processor to a vent on the back of the computer. However, all of the computers I have worked on have Pentium processors. Now, I am working on an AMD, and there is a cooling fan directly on the processor. However, there is no plastic piece connecting the fan to the vent at the back. It looks like the warm air is just blowing out inside the computer. I am trying to recover files from the computer because the hard drive crashed. The IT department of the company that owns the computer said that the hard drive proba…

I've been making movies for school and they're pretty cool. I use Windows Movie Maker and Nero and the movies turn out cool. There are special effects so I can make it an old 1950's movie, slow motion, etc. But I want to be able to add in stuff that I can't videotape in real life, like a UFO coming in and abducting me or have a giant godzilla destroy a city. How do I add in special effects. What program is best for this and where do I get it?

First, does a computer chip require an atmosphere to run? In other words, it can run in a vacuum, right? Second, I know there is an upper limit to acceptable temperatures for chips to run correctly in (hence heatsincs and fans in computers), but is there a lower limit?

ZoneAlarm is a popular security firewall that is believed to be one of the best security systems available. A few days ago, all ZoneAlarm products on thousands of computers suddenly shut down. It was later announced that Zone Labs, the creators of ZoneAlarm attempted to run a background automatic update to their software, and failed. After they realized that all of their customers' firewalls had crashed, they ran another background automatic update that fixed the problem. Nobody that used the firewall was aware that their software was being updated. The fact that ZoneAlarm products were shutdown on so many computers made me realize how bad the security is on Zone …

  16. I looking at going back to school for my BS in either information technology or computers and information science. The two schools in question are Univeristy of Phoenix Online (IT) and University of Maryland University College (CIS). I live in maryland so I have a little biased opinion in thinking that UMUC is the better of the two online programs. Both programs are similar except that it will probably be alot easier for me to get my degree from Phoenix because of the type of classes and amount of credits needed. But I don't want to attend Phoenix if the degree isnt going to mean anything. So what I need help with from you guys is to help me make a choic…

OK, iv googled and read, but im a tad confused about a few parts of how urls are resolved into IPs -- mainly the diference between a host and a domain. Could we ignore all the complications involving the host file/domain name cache/ISP-DNS/root-DNS etc; im not too fused with where the ip is resolved from, more how it is resolved. So, take this site: 38.118.74.97 thats SFN. the url for the main page is: http://www.scienceforums.net:80/index.php?'>http://www.scienceforums.net:80/index.php? |__|...|___________________||.|_______| ..|....................|...............port......| protocol.........middle bit..............end bit The protocol tell…

I was thinking about computer cooling and I was thinking is our aim to cool it to room teperature? Well with fans you can't really get it much lower than room temp, so in hot countries where the average summer day has temperatures above 40C do computers just live with the extreme heat conditions???

OK, so I've got a bunch of speakers lying around so I thought I'd make a home made "surround sound"... the reason I use "" is because it's not technically true surround sound as I'm using the standard stereo port on my computer, but I'm feeding that signal into a tiny breadboard to which I can attach lots of speakers, the end result is that I've got 7 speakers operating on two channels (standard left/right stereo). My only thing is, I now have 7 speakers drawing current from 1 port which is meant to supply 2 speakers, could this put a high, potentialy damaging, drain on the port/computer? Actually the comp can handle it, looking at PSU supply/current useage but co…
