Is it possible that some people are misdiagnosed with ADHD when the problem is really a bad memory? I mean, the symptoms could be the same. Imagine that you were giving someone a set of instructions and then later you found that they only did half of them. You might first think that they weren't paying attention, but what if they WERE paying attention and they just didn't register half the instruction into memory. They wouldn't be able to defend themselves because what would they say? "Yeah, I know you told me that, but I forgot." No, he'd say "I don't remember you telling me that." I guess if it's a problem of recall, he might have the former response, but if it's a prob…

I did an IQ test a long time ago and I forget what the name of it was. It involved the following tasks (among others): -Sorting a series of cards with cartoons on them depicting situation, and I was supposed to put them in their most logical order (a series of events that tell a story). -Answers to general questions that test knowledge and common sense. -Short-term memory test where I was to repeat a series of numbers spoken to me. Another such test where I was to repeat a series of numbers in the reverse order in which they were spoken to me. -Arranging together 9 blocks which were half red, half white (separated along the diagonal) such that they matched…

I have a question on thought processes. I include here an excert of Augustine of Hippo in regards to how one is culpable of sins of thought. I wish to do further research on his work and would appreciate any constructive input on the matter. I am interested in the scientific accuracy of this writing in general, and in particular the former of the statement outlined in bold. I am also curious as to how control of the thought is accomplished, and how it differs pathologically from the latter. "On the contrary, Augustine adds after a few words: "Man will be altogether lost unless, through the grace of the Mediat…

I've never had any education in psychology/sociology, except for some books I read on memetics and anthropology, but I'd like to share a model I've developed of human psychology/sociology since I've gotten interested in the subject. At the core of the human mind are drives. These are the deep-rooted animal instincts that we are all born with. Some examples: - hunger - sleep - social interaction - social power - sex - curiosity - etc... Satisfying these drives isn't as simple as "go up to the tree and get a banana". Homo sapiens would've never survived the cold winters if they weren't capable of quickly adapting to changing environment and fol…

I came up with some new ideas for my science project and I just wanted to get some opinions on it for my project I'm kind of having a hard time naming it but this is what it involves I plan to have 5 subjects 4 of my associates and myself, 2 of the subjects will be asked to do 10 questions from english, 10 from science, and 10 from math all within 15 minutes with the reward being 20$ for whoever can finish the most and get the higher score but all the while being oblivious of the time, my other two subjects will do the same thing only without an reward but their motivation will come from a timer i will set on the table their doing their work on so they will basically try …

Dear friends, I am just starting college in the upcoming year. I have determined that Sociology is the field for me. I have done some research but have yet to find out how much I can expect to be paid with my degree. Can anyone tell me what I should expect with a Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate, and Professional degree? Thanks.

I am going to propose another new theory. If we look at animals they are naturally intergrated with their environment. This suggests that they instinctively thought process more in the right or 3-D spatial side of the brain. Modern humans are more rational and we use the left side of the brain as our center area of consciousness. The left side of the brain is more 2-D or based on cause and effect. Here is the theory. If human evolved from animals, it would follow that at one time we were all more centered in the right hemisphere. The evolution into the left hemisphere was probably a slow process and did not occur all at once. The observation that human culture had ev…

What exactly is a subconscious? Do the thoughts of my subconscious sometimes flow into the thoughts that I am aware of? When a certain thought comes into my mind, was it processed in my subconscious first? Sometimes I feel like my mind is arguing with itself. I sometimes make a decision, even though I really want to make another decision. Is this my subconscious taking over my mind?

You probably think that different people have a different level of intelligence. When asked who the most intelligent man that ever lived was, most of you might say Einstein, or some other scientist. Einstein used his intelligence for scientific purposes. Therefore, it is much easier for scientists to call him a genius. However, artists can also be extremely intelligent, but they choose to focus on their art and not science. Intelligence is difficult to define. In high school, I failed the Algebra exam multiple times. However, I had perfect scores in both History and English. My History teacher told me that I was the only student he ever had that did that. H…

How we think and perceive is based off language for the most part, right? We see a chair, we perceive it as a chair, and we think things out using words in our head. How are mind works revolves around language to a large extent, right? So our thought processes in our cerebral cortex have evolved within the limits of language. I would imagine the way we perceive the world and how we think, and the content of those thoughts, would be radically different if there was some hypothetical substitute for language, like say electronic data transmitted between humans, or telepathy. No?

I've looked all over the web for a while and I haven't been able to find an accurate defintion to explain what a real sociopath is. People will attribute a lust for wealth to a sociopath but is wealth truly a sociopathic desire? Could not unconventional thinking give trait for them to quest something else such as knowledge? Wouldn't a sociopath be intelligent enough to quest for other things than money which are worth more? What makes most people who are called sociopaths seek money? Isn't there a difference between greed and being a sociopath? http://www.9types.com/wwwboard/messages/18332.html If a sociopath quests power why would they bring themselves …

Why is that when I think to myself, I do so in my own voice? Why not someone elses voice? There is no logical reason why I could not think with a different voice, yet I don't (and, in fact, I really can't). Does anyone else here NOT think with thier own voice? Can you, if you try hard, consistently think to yourself with someone else's voice without imagining another person speaking it to you? I've found that I can't without great effort, and even then only for very short periods of time before I automatically flip to my own voice. Anyone else claim to be different? In any event, why do you think that is?

I am 19 I always like to think I have a fairly good memory. One that stood out was when I was younger (perhaps when I was 4 years old, maybe younger) was when my mother and I (and I think my grandmother too) were shopping at this nice town. I remember getting a red white and blue futuristic toy gun that made a tiny spark inside when fired. I remeber the lady who worked at the toy store and bin in which the guns were held. But anyway that’s not what interesting about it, but what is interesting is that I remember specifically that this town was east of where I used to live. I had no idea what the town was called or anything, but I remember taking the bus, and I know that i…

I've never had any education in psychology/psychiatry, besides some books I read about memetics and sociology, but I'd like to share the view I've developed since I've gotten interested in the subject. We all think with the mind of an ape. Our instincts, desires, fears, and emotions are 'extra baggage' from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Evolution happens over millions of years, but all the major revolutions and innovations in society happend over the last 1000 or so years. Rate of natural selection can't keep up with rate of changing environment, so we're stuck in hunter-gatherer mode. We're held back by a bioligical 'speed-limit', even though we could…

this is part Sociology too. and Interesting revelation occured to me in IRC chat during a joke I made when trying to call a friend up that hadn`t answered. the large majority of my mates and friends (a good 85%) are aged 50+, mostly early 60s. now I`m only 38 years old (a spring chicken), I`m accepted as an equal the same as I accept them. now surely I should be amongst folk my own age in the main? but I`ve been that way most of my life. I`m interested to find out what YOUR average friends ages are, are they older or younger? and have you always been the same?

Dear P&P Friends, Who said ,"thinking outside the box"? I love that exspression. I view things differently than most. I love to solve personal problems taking into account all the ingredients of the problem. I love to think outside the perverbal box. From science to apples. I think all the time about whatever comes to mind. I want to believe I am unique and a exspressionist. I have always walked to the tune of a different drummer all my life. I am being harassed to the point I am losing my patience with these people because I seem like a nerd to them. Is this a sign of mental health problems? pljames

In our psychology classes, we've been studying the effects that classroom design have on the performance and attention in pupils. We are working in groups, and the rest of my group has decided that there should be one main window behind the class to give illumination, but that the pupils face away from it. They think that this will prevent pupils from turning around because it would be more blatant, and they would be disciplined. I think this is rubbish and not based on anything proven, and would more likely result in poor performance as you would be constantly shadowing your work.. Which seems the more likely outcome?

Why is it that we as humans can go about our day to day lives without ever getting sad or wondering what the point is? I mean if you follow a religion they ok, i can understand that, but for the rest of us intelligent people what is the point? One day, we WILL grow old, and our entire conscious thought will die out making anything we ever did, felt, or thought, practically obsolete, except to those who are left behind to read it, who will also die anyways. I think there is something in the brain that makes people just over look all of this, and want to continue living. Anyone else think about this?
