After recently reading an article in a science magazine about how they are trying to use viri to fight things like colds I got thinking. The reason this is so hard is that the virus mutates - I already know, again form the magazine that viruses are being tested in the treating of cancers but would it be possible to use the viruses mutations as a weapon too? What I mean is this: A virus can mutate but so too can a cancer, could you engineer a virus that mutates "in sync" with the cancer cells it was designed to destroy? That way the effect would make the cancer mutations useless because the virus would simple mutate in a way that makes the mutation useless. Any…

hello. i am autistic. my parents said that i was a vibrant, social, energetic baby. then i received the dpt vacceine, and they said afterwards i became withdrawn and lethargic. soon afterwas i was diagnosed with autism. my parents are a member of a growing number of people who are convinced that the mercury preservatives used in vacceines are the cause of autism. this was a very interesting article i thought: http://www.mercola.com/2005/may/4/amish_autism.htm autism is not present among amish people. at all. and they do not believe in vacceines or technology. reviewed data from the cdc suggest that children who receive mercury vaccines are 27x as…

Hello! Im a newbie at this site...and i'm trying to come up with an idea for this Gr.7/8 science fair...so sorry if this question sounds really dumb, however is it possible for one individual to have more than one blood type? I am aware that there are certain restrictions to which blood can be transfused to another blood type; i.e. the individuals with Type A blood can only receive blood from other individuals that only have Type A and O Blood. Type B individuals could only receive blood from those with Typed B and O. Type O could only receive from other O’s. And AB is considered as a ‘Universal Receiver’; hence individuals with Type AB could receive from anyone; whet…

Why do medicines have to taste so bad ? Please see the link below... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/11/13/nsauer13.xml I'd of thought even poultry would turn their beak up at sauerkraut...think I'd rather suffer with the flu for a week. I'm not sure how conclusive the findings are, but seems to be quite promising.

Last night as I was falling asleep I thought about how vision could be corrected if someone had bad vision. For some reason I thought that red and green light exposed to an eye while being flashed at cirtain intervals depending on the eye's problem can correct vision. Could that work? The reason I think it would work is because flashing red and green light at a damaged eye would excersize the rods and cones in the eye causeing them to work properly. Dose that make sence. Thanks

This seems to be an issue of much confusion, especially since I've heard many trying to claim that nicotine is in and of itself a carcinogen. As far as I can tell these are the primary carcinogens in cigarettes: Polonium-210 and Lead-210: Radioactive isotopes which emit ionizing alpha radiation, making them extremely mutagenic. They are present in chemical fertilizers enriched with phosphate and comes in the form of either soluble or insoluble compounds. The soluble compounds are removed from the body through natural processes, whereas the insoluable compounds remain in the lungs and bombard lung tissue with ionizing alpha radiation. According to this site: …

When in my biology classes, we always talk about what would happen if XYZ happened - and often times it's either something catastrophic to the animal/cell or it causes death. But this has me wondering - what decides death? How do you decipher between a plant that is alive or dead? Does death happen at the cellular - or even subcellular level? Or does it have to involve the break-down of tissues and organs? I know an animal can be considered dead even if the heart is still beating, but then how do you know it is dead? And with plants - if you cut a flower, is it considered dead? If it is mostly wilted but part of it is still green and turgid, is it still considered living …

I'd like to know what the long term effects of Ritalin are. If anyone can give links to papers or reseach that show what the long term adverse effects are. I know that other amphetamines can cause heart valve problems with long term use but how much research has been done on Ritalin? I can't find much if any research on the web all I can find is peoples opinions about the drug. Ritalin became available in the 1980's? Thats when the disorder was found or invented (whichever your opinion is). If it has only been around 25 years then is this enough time to see the long term affects?

I need to fall asleep before 2 a.m. central so i'm not tired when I have to get up. Well I can only ever fall asleep when im tired. I took 3 Tylenol PMs to get me tired, and man they work very well, they make me feel like I haven't slept in 3 days. Well I forgot I took them because only 15 minutes went by and they didn't kick in and I didn't realize until after I got another 3 (drank it down with coca-cola) and headed back up to my room that I had already taken some. Not usually in my nature to forget something like that I guess my mind was to much on what im working on. My question is, did I take a dangerous amount? Right now is about 15 minutes after I took the last…

Hi Does anyone know why I could have circular bruises on theback of my leg under my knee?? It only appeared on one leg and didn't hurt at all. They were perfectly round (two) and dark purple. It might not be anything but it is a bit odd. I looked on a few websites but couldn't really find any answers. I would be very grateful if you could help me, Cheers Nicole

A close friend of mine has severe alleriges to salmon, his throat closes up, and has had this problem all his life. I was curior about this, specifically what is it in salmon and the related fish that cause allerigc reaction in such specific areas? I did research (read: I googled it) but there were no substantive answers. I would guess that some protein enagages in a chemical reaction causing the epithelial tissue in the throat to close, but I was wondering if anyone knew the actual cause.

I found this quite interesting, new research by studying the DNA in blood samples has identified certain genes responsible for high anxiety levels. This field of research will later develop to help treating conditions such as depression, which means rather than diagnosing psychological disorders through explanation of the symptons to a practitioner / doctor, a simple blood test (which only takes several hours for a result) will diagnose the problem more efficiently, and will ensure that the correct treatment is given to the patient. Hopefully this will mean people will be recieving the correct drugs for their condition, rather than trying a whole spectrum of bar…

There were some news messages recently that the amount of toxic products in our blood is rising. (some say risky, some within tolerance) I was thinking if blood donation would help reducing ANY unknown toxic in your blood. I did some simple math You can give about 10% of blood with pauzes of minimum 16weeks. 0.9^6=0.53 so in about 6*16weeks or 2years I would be able to cut the percentage of toxic producs in my blood in half. This is obviously assuming that there are no new producs added during that time and that they are present in my blood. Is the body itself cleaning your blood in some way? (I mean products that aren't suppose to be there, like some metal…

The title is a bit simple but it isn't that simple: The history: I'm Nearsighted (near is about 20cm for me) but the last years (I'm 32). My glasses can't totally correct my sight back to good vision. (never got perfect vision) Other glasses don't help and they can't find anything wrong (except that I can't see very well with my glasses) They also looked in my eyes and one said it's like a little infected while the other says no it isn't. The questions: 1) Is it possible to have a light infection in both eyes for a long time? 2) If yes could it be they didn't saw it (because not easy to see) and it's the reason of my vision becoming worse? 3) Would ta…
