From a newspaper article this morning, I see an ex US President doing something wonderful. Jimmy Carter has spearheaded a campaign to counter a truly dreadful affliction - Guinea worm in Africa. This is described in : http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/international/africa/26worm.html The eggs of this worm are picked up by drinking contaminated water. The worm grows inside the body, to sometimes almost a metre long, at which stage it 'eats' its way out to spill its eggs. The pain is apparently excruciating, and there is no cure. However, by changing the quality of drinking water, the entire life cycle can be stopped in its tracks. Jimmy Carter managed t…

Hi all, not sure if this is in the best place so feel free to shift it if it's not I'm only an MLA at the moment in the Pathology labs. I'll be starting my BMS degree soon but I'm seriously considering my long term options now that I've had a taste of what exactly a BMS does. I understand that once qualified, a BMS would usually specialise. What I'm wondering is, if it's a BMS degree that the person has done, would there be any other options apart from becoming an actual biomedical scientist? Like maybe heading towards another area such as neurology, or going into research? It would probably be best to do a different degree if you didn't want to be a biomedical …

Hello, I was wondering if there was any natural cure for the dystrophy? Or anything that could relief the muscular pain or anything? I need to find some solid science-fair project and I would like to do experimentation (on rats, or humans, or anything) so I thought something related with dystrophy would be good...So if there is no cure, does anyone have an idea of an experiment that could be done with dystophy? (With stats and all after)... Thanks in advance.

I just need to know if it possible that a medication was taken for 7 years, after stopped, but still have traces in system (obvoiusly after so many years), is it possible to have high-sensitivity to it and still feel effects of it, where anywhere there's traces of it, (I have a skin desease and it reacts to it). It's important to mention this was large amounts of dust (it was a crumbly sol-tab medication) and at there were at least 20 boxes of it stored in drawers with remaining crumbles of dust of it, and it got cleared away but it seems like, the dust spread everywhere. I have always been ultra-sensitve, the most smallest thing affects me, so I don't doubt this is possi…

I was wondering if someone can tell me the correct way to inject yourself in plain english. You would think the web would be full of useful info like that but this is the first place I have found where i could even try and ask someone. And I don't mean the steroid type of injection, just the regular one. Please no one bust my balls for asking this. It could save lives.

Just curious, does AIDS have a natural survival rate, or is it 100% fatal? I don't mean is it considered 100% fatal. I mean have we seen survivors on a regular basis? And I don't mean people who have the disease but hang on until they're taken out by another disease attacking their weakened immune system. I mean they beat it, lock, stock and barrel, through their own super-poweful immune system. I'm pretty sure I've read about cases like this -- people whose immune systems simply beat AIDS. Also, is it possible that I'm confusing this with the issue of immune systems that reject/destroy the HIV at introduction and don't let it survive and thrive in the sy…

  14. I've been searching for an answer to share with my doctor and hope someone here has that answer. Is it possible for a long-term use of Tramadol to cause the body to stop producing its own endorphins, resulting in an area near the original pain site to react with 'diffuse' pain after relatively little physical stress?

Hey guys, I'm usually against supplements. From what i could check through (limited) research, most of what I checked were either unnecessary or actually bad for you. However, I've been having slight digestion problems (..err) lately, and a friend of mine suggested I use a natural Fiber Supplement. It's called: Benefiber. I tried to research it online (I don't just 'take stuff' without check, or medical advice, and some of those supplements, i've heard, need doctor's review, so I am skeptical) -- but i couldnt' find anything BAD with it. Only neutral or good reviews. So... does anyone know anything about it? Is it okay to take a Fiber supplement, consi…

After a stressful week, there is nothing I like to do better than to enjoy the company of good friends and drink a considerable ammount of alcohol. Though I am not an alcoholic, I truly enjoy the carefree effects of relaxation and mild euphoria, especially after a stressful weekend. I would thereby consider myself a "weekend warrior" as far as my drinking habits are concerned. Though I am certainly not drunk all weekend, I do on occasions get pretty smashed (8-12 beers or equivalent drinks) but on most nights I may drink less than 6. Nevertheless, I am an extremely healthy person, I work out and eat right all week. I feel my only downfall would be my drinking habits. From…

  18. Something that I haven't been able to understand is how the cost of getting liposuction is cut in half when a person decides to go to Mexico instead of having it done in America. And I'm not asking for a biased opinion about the danger involved unless it relates to anethesia. However, I am questioning why it costs so much more to get a liposuction procedure done in America than it is in Mexico? What makes the drastic cost difference? The medical equipment? The economics? The politics? I haven't been able to understand why this drastic cost difference exists. Does anyone here have an analyzed reason as to why the costs differ?

I'm looking around on the web doing research on something and then I come across something I just find very odd. Someone claims that birth control causes early abortions. http://www.prolife.com/BIRTHCNT.html What is this claim this person is really trying to say? That if you take the pill while you're pregnant there will be a biological dysfunction with the birth in which you will be forced to either have an abortion or suffer in eternal pain until death? What is this crap people are talking about? I suspect that most women probably don't test themselves to see if they are pregnant or not. Or else 1 out of 300, seeing as there are usually over one…

I am about to embark on another surgery. This one is going to leave me even more immobilized for a while till the fusion sets in my neck. Rather than having to deal with cooking much, at least for a little while, I was thinking about coming up with some really easy to make shakes that have everything in them that I need, or as close to it as possible. A staple of my breakfast for quite some time has been a simple whey protein-oatmeal-flax oil-guava pulp shake, but after a trip to whole foods, it looks like this is more of a fantasy than doable, since all of the different grains and stuff that I could throw in there for variety all seem to have the same 2 or 3 vitamins…

Has there ever been a recognised phenomenon where, when someone has taken a medication, it didn't have any effect because the patient didn't expect it to work? For example, expecting an antidepressant to not work, and so it doesn't - even after having taken it for 3 months...?

I would appreciate hearing from any members who have /are using Avandia & any adverse experiences they may have had . This request is in light of recent (contested ) reports . I am a type 2 diabetic ( 12 years now , age 78 )& have been taking 2 times 5 mg / day for several years now ( along with glucophage , glucotrol & 35 units insulin ( Lantus ) daily ) -- all so far w/o any problems & reasonable blood sugar control . My feeling is that croaking from a heart attack is a better option than from the ravages of diabetes .

Apparently buckyballs form naturally in minute quantities under extreme conditions such as lightning strikes. They are potentially as bad as asbestos dust is to our lungs. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080527091910.htm So, my question is are the lightening making rooms that many science museums have, could they be potentially hazardous due to the buckyballs that are created within them? Or does lightening need specific material present for the carbon-60 to be formed? Or, are we at greater risk just by going to something like a sandy beach where silica is supposedly an issue?

  24. Hi! Something that could be promising in the future... For example, garlic could have an effect on high blood pressure so there are studies going on to see if it could be turned into a vaccine to hypertension...(that's a lame example).... It could have to do with anything (genomic, biotechnology...even geology), as long as it could have a potential in improving a health problem. Thanks in advance.

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section, first time visiting and all. Anyways, I recall reading about something in the news within the past year, about some sort of protein, compound, enzyme, or what have you, that when topically applied to cuts, would heal the cuts around twice as fast. Also, it would minimize scar tissue on wounds that other wise would have had massive scar tissue. I also seem to remember it being derived from stem cells somehow. It figures that I can't remember the name. I do think it was a whole mess of letters and numbers though. If anyone has ANY idea what I'm talking about, some more information or a link would be greatly appreciated. …
