Hi, in this video this guy appears to be implying that one single DNA polymerase molecule is responsible for the process of copying DNA. (I may however be reading him wrong.) He appears to imply that the DNA polymerase simply 'hops' back and forth across the two strands of the DNA molecule as DNA Helicase separates the two different strands. But surely it would make more sense and be more efficient if the replication process occurred using two separate polymerases? Since DNA polymerase 1 is progressive/semi-processive and DNA polymerase III is highly processive, wouldn't it be better to have these two enzymes do the two jobs separately at the same time? Also s…

Hey Everyone I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out. I am going to have access to a large number of Daphnia of varying species this summer and I was going to take subsamples and save them for a later date. I want to eventually be able to use them for genetic sequencing but I will not be able to extract any DNA from the Daphnia right away. I was going to initially store them in 70% ethanol and store them in the freezer, because when I worked in an RNA lab we store precipitated DNA in isopropanol and I think a buffer and then put them in a freezer. I then read online somewhere that storing them in ethanol could skew the results when they were used to run…

Humans and chimps are very closely related genetically, closer than a donkey and a horse which can hybridize, could a human and a bonobo, bonobos are said to be closer to us genetically than regular chimps, be hybridized? there have been many claims that this has already been done but as far as i know they are all false or have no evidence to back those claims up. So is there any reason why it would not work? The technology to do this does exist but would it work and if not why not?

Hello, I'm not a geneticist but I am in the process of writing a genetics paper so as you can imagine I have a few questions. I was wondering, is there a standard relationship between the number of epistatic interactions/inputs a gene has and the degree of polymorphism generally found at that locus? If a collection of genes are epistatically selected, does that mean they are a haplotype because they are in LD (I have a sinking feeling that I'm conflating these concepts)? How do haplotype frequencies affect frequencies of genes within that haplotype? Apologies for the lack of structure, I'm not really sure what I'm trying to ask! :s

I have a question for which i would like a complete answer there is a caste system in india with 4 castes kshatriyas(people who spent their life fighting they were basically warriors) brahmins(people who spent their life doing intellectual stuff) and vaishyas and shudras and this caste system started thousands of years ago also people married within their own caste so my question is does the this really long(1000 years) duration for which people who had certain specific professions affect the mental and physical faculties of the people born in todays modern world. I mean do brahmin's children today have a higher IQ and are smarter than other castes because thei…

This is actually I encounter when I am doing an exercise. Now there are 2 phage mutant but we don't know if they occur at the same locus. The usual practice is to conduct a complementation test (to cross them in a restrictive host and see if lysis occurs). But, because it is provided that this phage is T even and replicate with headful packaging (genomes concate and every capsid accomodates 1 genome plus some more bits), my question is why can't we use a permissive host to do the job. Let say if the two mutations occurs at the same locus, in a permissive host no matter how they perform recombination they cannot produce wildtype phage, so that when the progeny is spread on…

  17. A friend of mine recently commented on my "unusual" dark brown eyes. I have touched on some genetics in my studies and I know brown eyes to be a dominant trait in white populations. And so "hah!" I told her, that is ridiculous, lots of people have brown eyes - surely. Except I began to notice that the majority of people I came into contact with in my town in North East England did indeed have light coloured eyes. I became curious and started to count! In my university classes over one day (what!? I get bored!!) I encountered about 240 people, only 3 of which, including myself, had brown eyes. I also started to take note when out on the town, out shopping and o…

As a first line of defense against racism, most people say that race has no biological validity and that all apparent racial differences are just skin deep. But this defense mistakenly assumes that our very important moral value -- that all human beings must be treated with equal respect -- can only be sustained if it also happens to turn out to be the case that all human beings are in fact equal in every respect, and especially equal by race, which can at most be a contingent fact which later evidence could always prove false. Since our moral commitment to treating all people as equal is absolute, while any scientific evidence that races are equal in all capacities and…

Hello I am new to this forum so wanted to begin my introducing myself! I am a student in the UK in the 2nd year of her Genetics BSc degree. I thought I might join this forum to have some general genetics-based conversations with like-minded people! At the moment, I'm applying for a placement in Cambridge where I'd be studying the protein sequence analysis of mouse genomes! Very exciting, indeed! Has anyone here taken part in any lab work based around mouse genome analysis? I would love to hear about it! L x

I'm really, really intent on starting some kind of research in genetics or molecular biology and I was wondering if writing a paper about the tentative function of an uncharacterized human gene would be a good place to start. I hope this site can help me understand human genetics. Human egg donation is fairly new, 1983. I can't find a lot of information of genetic pull. Here is my story and question. I am too old to use my 40 something eggs. The IVF ( in vitro fertilization) has to report unsuccessful attempts to the government, making their practice not as good. So a lot of doctors won't attempt IVF after a certain age and recommend egg donors. So here is my question: 1) Is there a dominate sex, meaning the gene pull. Are there specific parts of the father or mother that can dominate? 2) If so, in looking for a donor other then ethnic back ground that is close to yours (nev…
