Today, Science Daily had a great article regarding rapid HGT between many different species of bacteria, they found that there are 43 independent cases of antibiotic resistant genes crossing between nations. It is known that the U.S. uses antibiotics in their food animals but it is banned in Europe and other nations. They stated that genes are being transferred from food animals to humans. It also shows that they were recent since there has not been enough time for mutations to occur. They commented that even though a billion years of genome evolution separate a bacteria living on a cow and a bacteria living on a human, both are accessing the same library. Environm…

I am Neurology student , today I get email from one person that can use telepathy. Is it possible that telepathy works on the distance of few kilometer? I can not find any official document on any existing person today that can use telepathy but I found Vinko Rajic and Uri Geller and they are talking that they can use telepathy. Why they do not make research on it? Many Schizophrenic are coming with similar story. Can it be that some Schizophrenics are just receiving from some other head? James Randi offer 1000000$ for evidence, but Vinko and Uri can use telepathy or maybe NOT? There is not scientific evidence for telepathy. Why this telepathy madness? At Edi…

Greetings all, I had some interesting concerns, and would like your take on the validity of human life evolving into DNA strings that eventually will include silicon. Is there a possibility of human evolution incorporating silicon, or crystalline silicon DNA strings? Can evolution of man also incorporate crystallizing carbon strings as well ? Respectfully, superball.

Hi, my name is Jonathan. I'm new here, so I'm sorry if this isn't the correct board to ask this question. But I am curious... I am a laymen when it comes to science, but I've always been fascinated by evolutionary biology and the study of animals from their inception to their extinction. I believe I know the basics about evolution, but want to know more and I'm wondering, which of Professor Richard Dawkins's books are a good start to understand evolution besides "The Magic of Reality" which is the only book of his I have read. I ask for Dawkins books because I am a huge admirer of his (considering I'm an Atheist too). Should I go with "The Selfish Gene" or "The Ancest…

Water on earth is teeming with life and scientists are looking for life in water on other worlds. The question is, is there any water on earth that doesn't have life? I'm not talking about in a lab or water that's been specially treated, but any water out in the wild that a person could find that is completely devoid of any life.

It hasn't been proven either way. I have my opionion but what's your'se? p.s. (I would have posted this in the poll forum but there's so rediculousness about have to do it by correspondance to an admin, Hmmmm I wonder why there's only been 1 new poll posted in the last 3 months.) But anyways this forum is appropriate enough.

It is often stated that nature made species "just good enough" and our genes are programmed to be more efficient in youth and are less efficient as you age. Has anyone considered that species are made "just good enough" is to reduce the amount of energy needed for predation to be successful?

This thought fascinates me. Would intelligence like ours(or advanced) always exist in the chain of evolution by natural selection? If life arises somewhere else in the cosmos, which I'm very sure would move forward through similar variations of Darwinian evolution(needs discussion, I know), is it necessary that the life forms there develop consciousness like humans? If it is hard to arrive at intelligence from single self replicating cell, then isn't it by sheer chance that we are here with our brains having capabilities it has?

So, to me, this is a burning question. How did reproduction evolve? If everything is just an accident, how would something like reproduction just "be" one day. Think of the first life on earth from an evolution perspective. So there are a lot of scientists that say "if life can happen, it will happen". That right there seems suspect to me. Why will life happen just because it can happen? I can have pizza tonight but that doesn't mean I WILL have pizza tonight. Anyway, so we have the first life that just happened to come about. Either that thing had to happen with the ability to reproduce, or else it would just die out. Are we to think that this thing j…

I have trouble understanding for example the flowering plant and the bee evolving to end up depending on each other for survival. What were they before they entered into this partnership of existence? If evolution is a long process and uneven at best how did these two evolve in different stages simultaneously in both species?

J.P. Rushton's Genetic Similarity Theory is not widely appraised by the mainstream of the scientific establishment in North America, Europe & Australia. Rushton and a small handful of collaborators at the University of Western Ontario have tried to reinterpret the general theory of Kin Selection, which was originally invented by W. D. Hamilton, Colin Pittendrigh, and George C. Williams. Using Hamilton's rule, Rushton has tried to derive a generalized theory about human sexual attraction among genetically close kin. Accordingly, Rushton postulates that people will instinctively find those who resemble their own family to be more attractive than outsid…

Maybe scientists already figured it out and I don't know, but is it possible that he's just so big that his body generates too many immune cells at too fast a rate for all of them to be destroyed, or at least it would take the AIDS virus so long to completely infect all a lot of them that his body had enough time to figure out an anti-body?

I read on science news that their extinction wasn't probably caused by asteroid impact. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/09/110919144042.htm If it was caused by any asteroid why anyway they didn't pop up back after that? Can we consider the croc as a small dinosaur survived only thanks to water? Is it possible that dinosaurs, being as clever as chickens, they have been wiped out by more clever predators?

I got into evolution a couple months ago after spending years tracing my family name, but then it changed when i watched a documentary on the evolution of us. It was hard for me to take it all in to understand why! I grasp the concept really easily, cause i have a science brain. The first thing I ask myself, is, Out of all the lines of close species, why did our direct line conquer all, why? I watched the video, showing Lucy taking her first steps out of the tree to the next. I am not sure if its still accurate, but the ape like animal named lucy is an old relative, her basic mind, is still imprinted in how ours works. The fact that we don't have to spend are days…

Firstly, I'm by no means whatsoever a biologist, so if I make false statements or using words wrongly or whatever, feel free to correct me. Having followed the debate between creationists and scientists lately (and what a circus that is), I've been reading up a little on evolution as well as stalked a bunch of channels on Youtube, discussing the matter. And so, I hope I have at least a basic understanding of evolution and natural selection. One thing I'm curious about, however, is statements such as "natural selection is our best theory for how species evolve". I have no problem with that, whatsoever, and I agree with it. But statements like that begs the question; "A…

We've all seen an apple , an orange , a tomato , etc . So , what is the purpose of these in the bigger picture of the evolution of plants ? I know the fruit contains the seeds to make a new plant , what is the purpose of the rest of the apple , orange or tomato ?

Modern birds have had their front legs, or what might be called their "arms", converted into wings. These wings are obviously essential to those birds which need to fly. But flying is not something all birds do. Some spend all their time walking about on the ground - eg, chickens. Chickens don't seem to have much use for wings. Apart from an occasional fluttering jump, their wings are just unnecessary encumbrances. Could these encumbrances be converted back into useful arms? A pair of manipulative arms, would surely be a much better survival asset, than a pair of almost redundant wings. Is there any sign that chickens, or any other flightless birds, are e…

I understand that if a species is separated by environmental barriers where enough changes occur in their DNA so that if both populations were to come together again they were no longer compatible for breeding. Correct? Why can humans that are separated by continents can still reproduce together?

I noticed that as I kept getting the higher and higher level of working out that my body didn't seem to need as much to recover, but this seems weird because doesn't larger muscle mass require even more calories to keep it alive? Also, I was wondering if there's some efficiency limit, or if there's some formula, and also about the correlation of this pattern compared to how larger animals use energy more efficiently.

I always knew that my granny was a great benefit to society and especially my family However, I could not put this on a measurable footing with a sensible hypothesis. Much to my surprise, I found the following article which underlines the importance of genetically defined onset of menopause: Cosmos So it seems that the menopause has a possible purpose after all but that the granny is essential to the survival of the young generation. Any thoughts?

How come no matter how many times you live through eating raw meat, your body doesn't make the right anti-bodies for it even though you survived it? I know different meat has different germs, but how come you will get sick the same way no matter how many times you eat raw chicken? You'd think you would have figured out a way to beat salmonella if your still alive after the first time.

Hello. I am new to the forum and found it by accident. In the last two years, my husband and I both have unexplained or can't be found by doctors health issues that seemingly become instantly triggered by stress. I have Hyper-coagulation and am trying to deal with it the best way I can. I recently talked to a doctor about my husband who seemingly has overnight "growth" spurts. He had a massive stroke in January 2011. What baffled doctors then and last year around May and June and then again in September of 2010 was a sudden weight gain within a 48 hour period of 200 plus pounds and a height increase of three inches! The erratic heartbeat and blood pressure and the sudden …

Hi: When an inflammatory agent enters the bloodstream [such the LPS of G- bacteria], the coagulation pathways are activated causing the blood to clot. These clots can be fatal if they block circulation to vital organs. The clotting process also exhausts the supply of platelets needed for the blood to clot when the coagulation is actually necessary -- such as during an injury. Hence, I fail to see any evolutionary benefit of the blood clotting when there is an inflammatory immune response. Any inputs? Thanks, GX

Here's a question. Why are teeth generally so symmetrical and even? A snaggle-toothed creature with lots of gaps in its teeth really doesn't bear much evolutionary advantage or disadvantage, but the norm in the animal kingdom is pretty much a full mouth of even teeth.
