General Philosophy
General philosophical discussions.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

What are the ethical, genetic and sociological implications of cryo-freezing sperms over several generations. If a person X has his gametes cryo-freezed now and these are restored say, 100 years later will such an offspring be able to face the challenges of survival? (in an idealized non-violent, non-toxic world), if at all? Is this a realistic scenario? What are your views on this? Please advise.

I've pretty much run out of idea's and question the ones which i think are mine so this is a somewhat penultimate thread of my curiosity i suppose. Okay so lets assume our conscious mind is the one in control, the all powerful. It has an override feature to some instincts and some very important ones at that (such as eating, sleeping et cetera). Now its obvious that whatever my conscious thinks my body will enact, i tell my arm to wave and it will be done, i tell my head to spread open my hand like a spider and so it is. What really makes my head spin is that really my conscious mind is a buffer for the subconscious, in reality my conscious mind is the hand and my…

Do you fear death? Why or why not? What do you think happens after your short little life on Earth? When you are on your death bed what will you be thinking while staring in the face of death?

It is said nothing can happen without time and some even say that time was even present before the big bang ( otherwise an activity called big bang could never have happened).... So, what created time.......some esoteric/unknown entity or activity? Are such questions worth dicussing....to begin with?

Theory: A contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalizing thinking, or the results of such thinking. Depending on the context, the results might for example include generalized explanations of how nature works. The word has its roots in ancient Greek, but in modern use it has taken on several different related meanings. A theory is not the same as a hypothesis. A theory provides an explanatory framework for some observation, and from the assumptions of the explanation follows a number of possible hypotheses that can be tested in order to provide support for, or challenge, the theory. One modern group of meanings emphasizes the interpretative, abstracting, a…

I really do not understand this logic. Someone says because you saw it in a movie its impossible. People cant invent anything if they don't have an imagination so why does having an imagination make you a moron? People said "What if people could fly" and made airplanes. Does that make them idiots? Why do people believe that because it does not exist now it will never exist and anyone with an imagination is stupid? I really don't understand this logic at all. In Star trek they transported peoples particles to another location. They are currently working on this. So why is believing stuff in star trek could be possible one day a sign that you're a complete idiot and everyon…

We have often heard about people who cannot see, hear and taste. Where would a person who cannot see, hear, taste, smell and touch ( an imaginary one, of course) find himself to exist?

I have had a theory for some time, and have not yet posted until today. Death, is the subject as seen above. No one really understands it, cause no one comes back from it alive. I was thinking, maybe when you die, there are two different paths created in time. One where you lay dead, one where you live on. Since the one where you die ends (According to you and your brain), I believe you will continue to live the line of time where you live. This wouldn't make sense, you would say at first. But what if it only appeared to you that people died, well, when they died? What if it only appeared that they died. What if they lived on, but only in an alternate timeline? So it woul…

The recent topic of 'Is sexual preference a choice?' has spurned some interesting posts. Most people, if not all, who posted were in support that it wasn't a choice, which brings us to this topic. There are different categories available with regards to sexual preference: heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, bisexual, perhaps even bestiality ,but according to that thread, for different reasons, none of them are a choice. If sexual preference isn't a choice what makes something a choice? At what level does an individual qualify for having made a choice?

I want to call it an "introductory clause," but I'm not exactly certain. When I'm describing a cause-and-effect scenario, and I'm doing so in the form of an "if-then" sentence, what's the clause in the sentence called that describes the "if" scenario? Ok, I probably just confused the hell out of you, so here's an example: "If you stick a penny in a light socket, you will get electrocuted." As you can see, I just described a cause-and-effect scenario, using an "if-then" sentence. The "if" or "cause" is sticking a penny in a light socket, and the "then," or the "effect," is electrocution. The "cause" is in bold, and the "effect" is underlined. What …

I think that a lot of us are familiar with social interactions over the internet by now, but, by looking at the attitude of people who do not participate in anonymous interaction, it seems that we have become a lot more mature, and maybe it has gotten to the point of making us stone walls, like a mental Stonewall Jackson. It's pretty obvious to see this type of maturation of mentality by looking at video lectures given by our genius predecessors in comparison to our current geniuses (Ray Kurzweil, Lawrence Krauss, Stuart Hamerhoff, Michio Kaku, Patricia Churchland, Bill Nye, Noam Chomsky, Morgan Freeman, etc.). It's like we have the capacity to completely ignore emotions …

if reality is composed at it's most fundamental level of information, how did this "material" come about? In a sense, that is what reality is "doing" with all this fancy evolution business...so as to extrapolate before the existence of maths proper, to whatever preceeded it. I see a flow-chart that begins with the void and ends with the IBH which describes everything and allows a tiny fraction to be expressed as the universe(s). Many of you have seen my threads already so I won't repeat myself unecessarily here unless asked specific questions...

What is the driver of social activity? Is it the upper sub-stratum of the elite, or as we go down the "economic food-chain",those denizens who have to bear the brunt of nature's ire and yet perform at their chosen workplace. eg)janitors and the like. Think of what would happen if their tire of society went on an impromptu agitation? What would be the impact on the economic system? What then is the right approach? Top-down or bottom-up. Please express your opinion.

It it true that it is very difficult if not impossible to stop thinking with your voice once you know a language. If I was going to think anyway, is my idea ever original? I'm going to think again, but it could be a good idea-- but because it's product of me thinking, and the words I know enslave me to thinking in my voice, is this idea really mine, or am I compelled to put in effort because of the words and their control over my mind (i.e. we can't stop thinking)?

I just wanted to take a little poll of everyone's view of the world. Are you a Platonist of mathematics, or someone that thinks that Mathematical structures exist in nature and are abstract, but real forms or do you believe that Mathematics simply is a human construct that allows us to interpret the nature of the world?

I have shared this theory off and on over the years and have noticed that almost every one has a curious aversion toward even contemplating it. I think it is because it reveals the core of our identity, which is constructed using the means the theory describes. Our identity is a very sacred and private place where intrusion is not welcome. I would love to see if some one here is brave enough to responds The Origin of Logic Briefly, the theory sees the origin of our logic system as similar to the origin of life, where all of the complexities of life/logic are made of a single act repeated over and over. In both cases that act is simple, yet far more com…

I'm a proponent of the computational theory of mind, which proposes that the brain is an information processing system and can therefore be emulated on a Turing-machine type of computer. This philosophical approach to consciousness meshes well with modern neuroscience, which so far has not found any mechanisms in the brain which cannot be understood by classical mechanics. If the computational theory of mind is correct, our thinking process is of course deterministic. Who here ascribes to the computational theory of mind? If you don't, why? A counterexample to the computational theory of mind which still relies on natural processes would be Penrose/Hamero…

Whenever you compare a person to any other species on the planet someone always seem to get offended. Now I do not mean when purposely using this as a an insult such as "I think you're a pig since you eat so much" but a genuine comparison. I do not see anything wrong in objectively pointing out similarities between certain creatures and if humans are not animals what are they? I have seen this comparison in two situations. Its either applying pets to children and apes/chimps to people. Now if you compare a person to a chimp those against it might say "Are you saying I throw my own poop"? since they throw poop." Another comparison I hear a lot is taking care of a p…

There is a theory saying that we are all just brains in a vat. That we are hooked up to a machine and everything we experience is all in our mind. That there is a giant computer that we are all plugged into. Which is the idea behind the movie "The Matrix".
