Projects

Fun science projects, things you've built, etc. all relating to science.

this is just a bit of fun for anyone that wishes to play. the challenge and the rules are simple you have to make your own battery(s), enough to keep a simple 4mm red LED lit for as long as possible. it must be a stand alone device with no other power input (so a rechargable battery is out of the question), and weigh no more than 250 grams. the timer starts as soon as the LED is lit, and stops as soon as it can longer be seen as lit in a dark room, the object is see who`s LED stays lit the longest honesty is essential obviously. please post your results here along with methods used, and Good Luck

  2. A project is not the same as an experiment. In a project, you work towards a pre-defined goal. Any project in any science is welcome here. If you have built a nice device, have written a nice piece of software, or have achieved a nice result after a thorough investigation, please let us know about it. In this section we do not want oneliners like "I have built a rocket, look how awesome it is". Threads on projects should give detailed descriptions on how you proceeded, such that others can benefit from the info. Discussions on how to achieve a certain goal also are very helpful. Helping each other with projects adds even more fun to working on them. I also want to…

as in time honored tradition, and to accompany such challenges as the: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2863 and: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3907 Now it`s time turn your thinking towards Lightbulbs! The Challenge is make your own Light bulb, it must be powerful enough to read by in a totally dark room, and be powered Electrically (so No flasks of Luminol, or Isotopes or Magnesium Flares!). it must last (giving off book readable light), for a Min of 10 minutes also. you can use whatever Voltage/Current you like AC or DC. Obviously the Less Power and Brighter the Light for that power the Better! Picture (as…

  4. here`s my next Challenge to all you Experimenteers out there, Summer time is comming up shortly and so I give you all fair notice! your challenge is to make a solar cooker, it`s to be made from scrap material or regular household materials. your job is to cook AND EAT! a hotdog sausage using only the power of direct sunlight. vegetarians may ellect a meat eating friend or use the Veggy equivalent (Quorn or Soya based hot dogs). the winner will be the one with the most original and functional design that works the best. IF! you wish to go further or better you need not limit this to a hotdog sausage, by all means, if you can do a Pizza, then do a Pizza ) Pi…

(Version 2) (Version 1: Monkey Man, and Golden Ratio) (My A.I. project theory is named "Eugene" short for "Eugenics" .................. You will learn how to Build a "Cognitive Engine", form this, you will learn how to "Create Intelligence", you will learn how to apply "Build Learning", these are qualifiers for "Artificial Intelligence", in the fundamental sense this means "HAL-9000", yet like the Movie, I'll come back to this statement (Everything I say will be very simple, if it isn't, talk to me about it, so I can amend a brief statment) : Cognitive Engine Principal = HAL - 9000 = Hyper Binary System Each Dollar Bill represents ab…

Hi...my idear is to drive two separate air tube coils at the same time... one around the other... but held apart so when they are given a charge each coils electromagnetic field works in unison with the other. Each coils input voltage is directed so the outer coil is fired in reverse and the inner coil fired so the cores em-field is forwardly moving the coils also would have a soft iron tube enclosing the magnetic field forming an em-shield. A bullet of aluminium with a drill hole at its rear is spun by an electric motor to a high speed just inside the beginning of the barrel, the other end of the tube has a tea intersecting tube and the end of the barrel…

I'm a rookie when it comes to electronics, but I was wondering, if you have a 12kV rated capacitor and then you charge it with a 3 kV power supply, does the capacitor discharge at the rated voltage of 12kV or does it discharge at 3kV becasue that was what it was charged with? This is prolly a dumb question, but thanks for any info.

Greetings! So Im making a coilgun for my science project at school, ofcourse my physics teacher thinks im insane. I would like to build a 4 stage coilgun with 20 capacitors in total. We were already sucesfull in assembling a single stage coilgun that used a ''ready'' circuit board from a disposable camera that already had a 330v 120uf capacitor attached to It. For the final version im planing to use 20x capacitors wich are either the same or with the same voltage and higher capacity. my questions are: 1)How do i mount the stages togeather? Because I couldnt find any ''real'' explination anywhere on the web. I know that it requiers a sensor of some sort or calculati…

here`s how: you`ll need an empty Pringles tube, clear out the little bits you missed when you were eating them, and then cut a 1x1cm hole in the middle of the metal based (I used a Dremel). then you need a can of Matt Black spray paint to paint the inside of the tube (it prevents unwanted internal reflections later). while this is drying ( a good 12+ hours is best) you need to get some brass shim stock about 1 inch square and Flat, if you can`t get any of this then CAREFULLY cut the side out of an Aluminium soda/beer Can, this will work just as well. next you need a sewing needle, I used one that was .5mm wide at it`s widest, although for the 23cm length of the tub…

We have a hugh crow and pigeon population in my town. Discharge of fire arms in the city limits to control our crow and pigeon population is a NO NO control. Starlings destroy millions of dollars worth of row crop that can feed the hungry mass of humans. Zon guns only scare them from one tree to the next. 20 years ago our city boasted 60 crows but now our sky is black. Poison contol a no no Shooting a no no and a bullit into someones window. Electrocution of crows a no no the EPA will be at your door. I made a proposal to the US FISH and WILD LIFE SERVICE and they never heard of a new way to control thier numbers without killing them and environmentaly…

I don't know if this is the right place to look but anywheres here it goes. My band is playing a show here in a 1,000 seat club, We want to take our show to the next level to really make an impression but the kind of pyro we want to use is very expensive and you also need a permit. I am looking for any interesting ideas of something we could do or use as an alternative, or some small pyro tricks that are fairly safe and don't need permits for? if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. please reply on here or email me at brackish35@hotmail.com thanks again

I was working on a wood working project, while listening to a pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, when I got a splinter from a piece of birch plywood I was working on. Looking at the edge, I found that I had sanded it quite sharp, although it wasn't anywhere near sharp enough to cut anything beyond cheese. So the idea struck me, how hard would it be to make a wooden sword? I tried birch plywood, and that got a semi decent edge. I just now tried MDF, and that didn't sharpen at all (despite me attempting to fire harden it). The point just disintegrated to sawdust. I think there might be some wood out there that is dense and hard enough to hold a good edge. …

So now I've got your attention its basically a hearing aid, but I'm not hard of hearing. From what I understand, a hearing aid is comprised of a mic and then an amplifier then a speaker. Therefore even if you're not hard of hearing it should be able to boost your range at least. Thing is I'm worried about interference and the noise becoming low quality. Obviously in busy, noisy places, the microphone will pick up all of the sound and I understand that there's very little I can do about this other than not use it in busy places. But you don't actually want the mic so sensitive it picks up every little sound and amplifies it because then the sound you want to hear, most lik…

  19. Bacterial Cellulose / Vegan Leather / Scoby Project Attempt to form bacterial cellulose using Kombucha recipe as a starting point. The result is also known as a SCOBY, a Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast. This was first really popularized(online anyways) by Designer Suzzane Lee with a set of Vegan "Leather" clothes. Thought Emporium / Scihouse improved on this a relatively simple water proofing strategy, involving a Cup Coconut Oil and 1 spoon Beeswax-Mineral Oil mixture. Researchers are looking into this as well. Has a number of useful properties. Expensive to produce on an industrial scale, but can make use of waste products. Test 1 ⦁ 1 Ga…

for a science fair project I was wondering if there is a better (more violent) solution for a kids volcano. It still has to be safe of course but we want it to shoot up instead of just foam over top.

  22. Hi! Together with friends I started a robot battle contest in which we use LEGO RC robots to battle inside a destructible city We want to make a big show out of it and record it as video ^^ The robots have high power motors and we control them with a 2.4ghz system. So we can use more tanks and robots the same time in missions and races etc. And everything already work. But we also plan autonomous working rescue drones and robots, flying LEGO copters and much more. For building the drones we going to use LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, and even give building sets away to students and interested builders depending to the kickstarted budget reached. We already have a pro…

I have done a science project testing how acidity affects the reproduction rate of brine shrimp. I have tabulated my results, but have come across strange data. The weights of the water + brine shrimp have fluctuated and i can't figure out why. How does it fall, because even if they die, they will weigh the same as when the were alive. The water has not evaporated either. Please can someone help? Thanks P.S. I've attached a picture of my table

I had a great idea one day when i was sick after watching Wall-e 4 times that it might be possible to build a robotic flower but im not sure where to order a kit from and i have no clue how to build it from scratch! I am fairly new to robotics and have attempted in the past to program a robot at the WSU robotics lab and...total failure! It went backwards three inches hit a wall and fell apart! But aside from just building this robotic wonder i am not to sure on what it's function might be? So any helpful websites or insights on this sticky situation would be great... thanks ever so much!

Me and a friend are considering doing our science fair project on rockets. We were going to try and build one and test it to a reasonable thesis somewhere along the lines of "Which rocket fuel will fly the rocket the furthest", "What rocket design is the most aerodynamic" , etc. But in our innitial brainstorming, we encountered a few problems. Can we actually make this rocket without having to buy anything substantial? We were going to build the body out of a thin aluminum cylinder we found and some other scrap metal, but we encountered a dillema when we realized we would need a motor. We do not want to buy the motor, if possible we want to make it ourselves. Is this poss…
