I've thought up of a way Blike could take advantage of vB's paid subscription system. By enabling the system, he could eliminate the Google ads (given enough revenue from subscriptions) or upgrade to more expensive hosting, software, whatever he wants. A few ideas on what the paid subscribers would get: 1. Ability to lock own threads. 2. Ability to "soft delete" own posts--make them only visible to moderators, so that we can get them back if they abuse it (I think this is a vB feature) 3. Greater PM limit. 4. Images in signatures. 5. A nifty little rank image or title or something. 6. Larger avatars (?) 7. No ads. 8. Whatever else I think of. Of course, you could remove these priveleges if they're abused, etc. Do you think this would be a good way to help support SFN while eliminating advertisements?

there`s been problems in the past with folks deleting entire sections out of threads, and that was just using the Edit function (hence it now has a timeout setting now to prevent this), could you imagine what problems full Delete could lead to? *Eeek!*

delete no, edit yes. but if you really need something deleting, you can ask any of the staff here and we`ll be happy to do it for you

Check your Facebook Connect settings here: http://www.scienceforums.net/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=members&area=facebook There's a setting for your avatar. If that doesn't work, you can disconnect your account from Facebook using the button at the bottom of the page. -

hey guys, I'm still having this problem, this is a bug or something? anything I can do? should I make new account not based on facebook so that I can change the avatar pic? -
Is there a way to delete a post or thread I've started? Thanks
-
And because there's no automated system it'd take up mod/admin time which they can't be bothered to spend on you when they have to delete your posts because they are not suitable!!! (People have asked before and that's normally the standard response!)
-
It was suggested else where that we should have the oppertunity to delete our own post. Also is there a way of emailing us when a post has been delted, because a few times i have thought that a post has been deleted, however i just posted it in a different thread that was similar. Cheers

Just PM a Moderator or Administrator if one is online or use this list. Let one of us know what you would like deleted or moved. You can edit but you can't delete.

Ignore them. Or Follow their posts with one that addresses the issue with a well constructed summary of current thinking and two or three relevant and apposite links. Or Encourage every tiny spark of reasoned thought that is displayed by them. Or Name them, and stand back to watch a concatennation of cacophanous chaos, a veritable blood bath, as pointless as one could imagine. [Delete as appropriate. Students will be marked for neatness in their presentations.]

Since when is akismet not free? Is this new? I knew that you just need to open a wordpress.com account and that gives yo free Akismet access. Look into that, I'll be really surprised if akismet started costing money...
-
There is spam karma 2, I think you should activate it and there is another one called Akismet but the problem is it requires a API key to get it working which is not free, use it if you can afford it. As for the statistics, go to your dashboard and click the drop down menu and you should see 'Firestats' which will show you the recent hits to your blog. There are plugins which will add you a widget box for email-subscription from feedburner or other sites but its very annoying for a beginner like you and me because one has to upload that plugin using a filezilla client which requires you to have a ftp account .

No, they do not. On pretty much every forum you will ever visit, Admins and Mods are members just like you, except they simply have a few extra account permissions and have agreed to try doing their part to help the site run smoothly. There is no payment involved, despite the mountains of headache and frustration.

“ Religion ” A Very Sensitive Subject
mab replied to mab's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
In the start, I have made request rather than forcing or imposing anything as word clearly shows that it was request. My second post shows this more clearly, that I wanted friendly and caring environment and am not against discussion which is in limits, without hurting feelings. I wrote, ,in this Suggestions and comments forum. In reply by Sayonara, I am told harshly, What is “Freedom of speech” by the way. He even as a Moderator couldn’t take such a common sentence, but able to bear whatever is happening in those religious threads. Should I call it Justice. Sayonara wrote Again misinterpretation of my writing, I didn’t say any such thing. I just wanted somebody to keep an eye on everything and delete those parts that cause pain. Sayonara wrote, If you don’t know how to drive then you don’t need to drive, if you are still willing to drive, in that case there should be driver sitting beside you, otherwise it will just cause accidents. If my message is still not conveyed to you, then it’s useless to say anything anymore. If my posts hurt someone then it was not my intention. I don’t want to further argue over this topic. -
Welp, just read that the posts need to be reviewed for the challenges forum. Sorry (never been on a forum that does that). You may delete this thread Mr. Moderator. I'M SUCH A NEWB!! UGH!

How do you delete your profile here?
StringJunky replied to cameron marical's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
If you fear your past don't ever have a Facebook account, as that will surely come back to bite your a***! -
When you delete a post/thread, could you PM the person that wrote the post/thread to tell them which post/thread and why it was deleted?
-
Not going to happen. The only reason we would send a PM or other message is if the material posted was of an extreme nature. The rest of the time posts are deleted because they are off-topic, spam, or otherwise break the rules. Chances are everyone knows perfectly well when they make such a post that it will end up being deleted. The mods are not going to be asked to send a PM for every "lol!" they delete.
