  1. Ironically, a decent quantity of human hair comes from religious donations. Not all of the same quality though which is why it is used in different end products. Evolution is just against you creating any kind of loop a pathogen could take advantage of. In many cases our instincts don't apply like they used to.
  2. Yeah, it can come from hair and duck feathers. Only one of a number of similarly "grouse" ingredients out there though. Mostly have to consider how much processing is involved. Personally I don't worry about it. Even something straight from the field is going to end up with some level of nastiness. You look too closely at what you eat and you are going to end up not eating.
  3. Marshall and Warren. http://www.csicop.org/si/show/bacteria_ulcers_and_ostracism_h._pylori_and_the_making_of_a_myth/
  4. Jetpacks are real. Mostly just pricey(gas based variety), not unlike flying cars. There isn't much in terms of of practical value on the moon. Not a whole lot you can do with lunar regolith. I looked into it awhile ago and concluded we'd be better off building stations in open space and not bothering with the added cost of yet another gravity well. Most I saw for the Moon to offer was in the form of a tourist destination and scientific reserach station.
  5. In 1811 Henry Cavendish, expanding on previous reserch done by Isaac Newton into Alchemical reactions, proved magic to be true via use of a modifed torsion balance. Tragically in doing so this led to his summoning Maxwell's Demon. The resolution of this violation of causality resulted in his tragic death in 1810.
  6. No, what you are exposed to in life will play a large(if not the largest) role. If you want to take a look at some of the different historical views they can be pretty enlightening.
  7. We can't guarantee at present that every cell will be altered or that they will be altered in the correct fashion. Depending on the disorder and chromosome makeup of the parents there would probably be a simpler solution.
  8. You are probably not the sole donor of genetic material and you can also screen for genetic disorders prior to. Whole body isn't terribly realistic and more than a little dangerous in terms of causing genetic damage.
  9. Everytime I see this thread, I think this: http://www.dezeen.com/2014/02/18/underground-farm-built-in-tunnels-12-storeys-beneath-london/
  10. I like to think of it as a conical seashell personally. Easiest to visualize in terms of area increasing from the tip outwards.
  11. There are some pratical concerns but the bulk of our illegal immigrants are not coming from regions we need to be concerned about. Just media trying to spin zenophobia. Even if we did role out with an Ebola Vaccine tomorrow how many of your own countrymen would you be willing to bet wouldn't take it? For its high rate of mortality, Ebola's transmission rate is actually fairly poor. If it were an airborne disease I'd be more concerned. I don't think it even technically qualifies as an outbreak. Only 2 infected and were initally infected in a different country. It hasn't spread any further as far as we can tell and it has certainly been within US borders(outside labs) in the past.
  12. lol, this is pretty funny in retrospect: English Mechanics and the World of Science, Volume 22
  13. Anyone know what the CO2-N2 plasma might look like?
  14. Could I create a similar illusion by comparing two memories?
  15. This would be more applicable to some of the earliest life. Was a long time from that point to multicellular lifeforms. Generally you see a trend to minimize the impact of random mutations and to promote adaptation via safer means(recombination, multicellularity, horizontal gene transfer, etc).
  16. Some of those are real. flying cars, jetpacks, holographic technology, drones/self driven vehicles Real world is necessarily more practical though considering we have a number of technologies/innovations that nobody predicted I think it is still pretty amazing.
  17. looks like there would be based on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_atmospheric_entry
  18. Was basically founded during WWI, though the idea for a Jewish State goes back further than that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balfour_Declaration_of_1917 Could have gone a number of different ways: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_a_Jewish_state
  19. Reuters provides more details: http://uk.reuters.com/article/2007/07/20/oukoe-uk-brain-tiny-idUKN1930510020070720 Memories are stored in the brain. If he truly had no brain, then he definitely wouldn't remember. It only states his brain is "almost completely absent". That is a far cry from missing or having signifignant sections of his brain cut out via lobotomy(lobe -otomy). His brain isn't as compact but it still has all the necessary parts and pieces for him to live a reasonably normal life.
  20. I read something similar about friction occuring in space(via a temperature difference). I'll have to keep an eye on how this progresses.
  21. The assorted articles just strike me as being "off". One is on a promotional site, another in a student area of NY Times and a third on ABC but without an author listed. After a bit of digging we find: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12831267 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20609003 Which are much more reasonable sounding. The second of the two also describes VAAM as being "similar to that produced by hornet (Vespa mandarina) larvae" to the relief of hornet larvae everywhere, I'm sure. Based on the results sounds like there may be some valid enhancement, but there also seems to be no small amount of hype. Note: L-trytophan is reported to be a component. Imported L-trytophan has caused issues in the past.
  22. There is a sort of Japanese sports drink. Saliva from young hornets is supposed to offer bennefits in terms of performance. I have zero idea about the effectiveness. Couldn't really find anything in the way of research papers(besides into properties of venom). OP may want to check fitness ehancement pages and see if there has been any sort of rough experimentation done.
  23. Well there is HGH though unless you are actually suffering a medical condition there is no good reason you should use it. Better to be at ease with your appearance or you'll always have some issue that you'll be wanting to fix.
  24. Whenver I use Wolfram Alpha I get nostalgic for Eric's Treasure Trove of Mathematics. Crazy pre-Wikipedia days.
  25. Mostly just meant that after taking "Good Ship 0.99c" out for a spin and coming back and landing on Earth you'll both be on the same page. There are highly theoretical methods, but yeah, they probably wouldn't remain applicable in our own framework. Interesting to think about the impact of changing in terms of dimensional properties though.
