  1. You only lack sufficient faith to believe in the reality that is Harry Potter. So it is written.
  2. ... pick any sequence you want. Any gene-encoding sequence to fit your request. With the exception of a few oligo sequences generated by biotech, they all fit this description. The desire to give the universe meaning doesn't mean you get to make up a reason and call it science. Illegitimately shifting the burden of proof is a slimy debate tactic, since you're the one advancing an untestable theory: that the universe has a designer. Why don't you get around to proving this assertation and then maybe it'll be appropriate for mooey to defend her reasons.
  3. discuss. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=456818481005835&set=a.456449604376056.98921.367116489976035&type=1&theater
  4. if time is an integer than how do you represent time between the seconds?
  5. The world is your oyster, my friend.
  6. Read the rules of the forum. Freedom of speech is at the discretion of mods and admins. This is a dictatorship.
  7. This is done to prevent people from inflating their post count, though your point is well taken. Half the post I responded to was you griping about how people respond to your ideas on internet forums. If you don't like it, why don't you try a different platform to express your ideas. Because the issue here is that when somebody asks a question or makes a comment, the right thing to do is to respond to that comment especially if its a request for evidence or clarification (as the responses in this thread have been). Your responses have been largely to complain about perceived ridicule. Comparing yourself to Patrick Henry is just ridiculous.
  8. ! Moderator Note WHR - you are now jeopardizing your own thread by spending more text complaining about how you think you're being treated than the original topic. You're going to need thicker skin if you want to contribute new ideas to science and philosophy. So far, no replies have been personal attacks. Off topic posts can be deleted and result in infractions.
  9. Even if this link was correct, it would still be a strawman. The argument is that complexity can arise from randomness is independent of evolution. Fail.
  10. I've wanted to set up something like this in the past... I dual boot windows & ubuntu (though honestly I hardly ever use windows applications anymore). Is it possible to run that windows partition through a virtual box on the linux side? I think that's what you're doing but I'm not sure.
  11. In fact, this has been done. http://idle.slashdot.org/story/11/09/26/0139253/a-few-million-virtual-monkeys-randomly-recreate-shakespeare I guess you know have to admit being wrong about complexity not being able to arise from randomness.
  12. ! Moderator Note Congratulations! You SFN members are the proud recipients of a BRAND NEW thread! Please try to keep this one on topic. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/67884-what-are-the-odds-of-life-evolving-by-chance-alone/page__st__80 edit: congrants to D H for not being fooled by recursion. The actual new link is here: http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/68088-intelligent-design-the-odds-of-life/
  13. I'm hoping that was taken out of context. Maybe they meant "rational, critical thinking skills" instead.
  14. So is there some threshold where enough people die to attract your attention or deserve notice?

    Thomas.Jefferson

I'm surprised you're such a fan... considering the Louisiana Purchase was made by executive order: surely a breach of the president's constitutional power.
  16. The answer is on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girvan%E2%80%93Newman_algorithm Are you sure you're working on your PhD
  17. chemistry is not out of the question for someone interested in genomics. for example, understanding how genes replicate, the genome is package, etc, all comes down to chemistry. What academic level are you at? Most colleges with a science program offer an intro/undergrad bioinformatics course (or series of courses) these days and someone with a chemistry background would certainly be welcome. That should get you started to see if you want to take it to the 'next level'
  18. Yes exactly. My point wasn't to diminish the horror or significance of the London attacks.. certainly there was room for both without risk getting excessive about it. How much effort does it take to complain on an online forum? Its not like recognizing victims of terror make any more (or less) likely that children will keep dying. My own skepticism of universal healthcare aside, I did think they did a good job addressing these themes. In addition to alluding to the effects of 200 years of British imperialism without beating it to death or living too much in the past. However, during the segment which NBC cut out, they did have a wall of remembrance with pictures of specific individuals. Sometimes putting a few, small number of faces (including 2 US servicemen) to a tragedy makes it that much more poignant. As much as you complain about this, humans ARE, through fault of our own psychological processes, insensitive to scales. 50 pictures of dead people feels much more weighty that a statistic about 4,000 or even 4 million dead. If you want people to recognize tragedy, put a few faces on it. Now I agree terrorism isn't the most important problem in the world, but it still is a problem. My concern is that this decision was merely an excuse because of the controversial politics of it being Israel. How hard would it have been to put in the press release that the dance was also a tribute to the Munich massacre. No extra effort involved.
  19. For some, it can help to get in writing the answer to the following question: "what kind kind of evidence would it take to convince you to change your mind about this." If you then later show them precisely this evidence, they will either 1) update or 2) squawk like a chicken. If 1, then good, you've done your job. If 2 - ridicule mercilessly.
  20. File this one under jumping to conclusions: http://deadspin.com/5929778/heres-the-opening-ceremony-tribute-to-terrorism-victims-nbc-doesnt-want-you-to-see So forget about the NBC 'censoring' angle. An olympics ceremony tribute to civilian victims of British terror from 2005 is ok, but tribute to Olympic athlete Israeli victims of terror from 1972 isn't? hm...
  21. off the top of my head: this isn't a complete knockout, but if the variant is different enough, you could create a miRNA to knockdown only 1 allele.
  22. The obvious problem is that scientists spend too much time studying quarks and viruses 'n such and not enough time curing aging.
  23. Points well taken, but I think the point is that 3d printer tech should improve so that any shlub with a printer can run something off. Obviously its not there yet, but normally when people talk about 3d printers, the issue is copyright infringement, not public safety.
  24. http://boingboing.net/2012/07/28/report-of-working-3d-printed-g.html#disqus_thread Why bother having gun control when a determined individual with enough resources to buy a 3d printer can just print out a gun from a few specs sheets (without a serial number) A scary application of 3d printer tech or just an extension of an existing problem of gun totin' 'merica?
