  1. Phi - you had me in Obama's camp until you revealed him as a science supporter. *gasp*!
  2. +1 though figuring out which side does this more would be a fool's errand, IMO. well the problem is that its obvious that businesses growing, hiring more people, etc is beneficial to the economy. Regulations which stifle business growth is obviously bad. However, the question is whether regulations (or repeal thereof) are designed to actually grow the economy or line the pocket of wall street traders and CEOs (which seems to have marginal benefit to economic growth). Now if Romney/Ryan supported the passage (or repeal) of regulations that contributed to actual business growth (rather than the latter) that would be something I could get behind.
  3. understanding isn't Rigney's goal, unfortunately. Is there anyone running who really wants fundamental change? (Obama platitudes aside). If there were, they'd surely get squashed by the political-industrial complex before they reached high office. calling Mercantilism Capitalism doesn't make it Capitalism... but I digress.
  4. Yeah I don't see an easy way to take enough science night classes to make it worth your while. You may have to take out financial aid to get a biology degree. That being said a masters (or something) in biology at a CUNY or SUNY school would look pretty good and wouldn't break the bank.
  5. It doesn't bother you that you aren't able to support your opinions with actual facts? You actually allude to my point in that none of the isms have turned out to be right. Well, 'right' by what metric by what evidence? In fact, I don't find your question plain or simple at all. I find it vague, unclear and complex (how much "better" and better for whom?).
  6. So you've contradicted yourself again. You claimed that you aren't trying to convince anyone to vote in a certain way yet here you make overt, charged political statements. You made statements using political divisive terms "us & them", then denied doing it, and are caught here doing it again. It's not that I think your political opinions are unworthy or incorrect, I just don't understand why you can't seem to respond to any comments directly. You respond to specific points with vague political appeals devoid of any facts or stats, and yet act like you're being ganged up on by a non-existent [sFN] liberal conspiracy [- really just calls for data and evidence. Hell, I'm a libertarian so there's probably a lot we can actually agree on]. This is a science forum, man, so get it together.
  7. Then you've contradicted yourself. I'm only gonna speak for myself here, but I've argued my political opinions on here before and I disagree with iNow, et al about as often as you do. But I've never been under the illusion that the purpose of political debate is anything other than to convince the other side that they're wrong. In fact, even to engage in a political debate requires a certain amount of arrogance that you know more than the other side. You've started enough of these threads that I call bullshit that you've "never told you how to vote." You may not have explicitly said: "you should vote for Romney", but you've made enough political threads arguing along conservative lines that its pretty obvious how you want America to vote. Obviously... there's not much else to do.
  8. Right now, Obama gets my vote thanks to Republican rhetoric on social issues. Other than that, I can't see much of a difference. Ok so there's healthcare reform, and while I'm not a supporter on principle I do want to see it play out & with Romney the repeal rhetoric is too strong for my taste. Who is us and them, rigney? You seem to like to play the innocent victim, but this reply contains nothing substantial and doesn't even begin to address iNow's points. Its well demonstrated that people vote based on party brand and vague emotional ideals rather than facts about candidates. Don't you think that this is bad for politics?
  9. accompanying antibiotic with probiotic (ex - yogurt, sauerkraut, etc) isn't a bad idea and could help your symptoms.
  10. ivanv - I believe the OP is referring to Artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is different than what CS departments mean by the term.
  11. Not really. Blood antigens where not designed, nor did they evolve in the context where blood transfusions are possible.

  16. Nice! I've been meaning to read something by Camus. I'll have to check this out. True, but until this moment I did not consider that there might be other 'Here-ists" to collaborate with.
  17. biology education is like an aluminum or steel container full of fleshy soil-dwelling annelids?
  18. I am here. It doesn't matter why. What matters is how ie- how it [life] can be better. And, as Gandalf the wise has said, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." screw god(s) or the bible(s) or any of that noise. f- tradition or fantasy or trying to please others. I am here. btiches.

    Statistics

I recommend a box-and whisker plot showing the median and inter-quartile ranges. Outliers are shown or excluded but you still use all the data to calculate the median (the benefit of median, as ewmon suggests is that outliers don't skew the measurements.)
  24. I like how, by the end, she's switched to beer.
