  1. My physics teacher recently discovered that some sort of organism grew in a super saturated sucrose-water solution . However, my biology teacher and I were unable to identify what fungus, mold, ect it was . For now i will do my best to describe it and I will try to get a picture posted by Monday. It's like a hyrid between a jellyfish and a eyeball. It has a large inch diameter spherical top with something black inside it. Extending from one side there is a cloud of tentacle-like extensions. I assume that the bottle was closed for the time that the bottle sat on the shelf, however I do not know if it was air-tight. If any one has any ideas please post. Thanks. I will try to get a picture of it during class on Monday and post it.
  2. there is a theory that the very center of a black hole is an enormous amount of matter packed into a point with no volume... is that what you are talking about?
  3. Sorry. I knew how to get a picture of my desktop but it is in 800X600 right now. The picture is 1200X900 for a better view. It was easier to just post the picture instead of the desktop.

    Meters

Never heard of either of those changes. But I don't know my science history very well.
  5. mad because i didn't want to be tickled.

    Meters

.... the length of a meter has not changed... light travels approximatly 299,793,458 meters per second therefore thedistance light travels in 1/299,793,458 sec is one meter... we don't use 300,000,000 because 299,793,458 is more accurate....
  7. no, i have been tickled by someone and been mad and it still tickled.
  8. perhaps it is because you know you are doing it. However, I don't think it relats so much to you knowing conciously you are doing it to yourself. For example, you feel yourself touching your stomach or your feet when you try to tickle yourself and therefore there is no reaction. When someone else would tickle you, you only feel the person's hand instead of both your hand and your feet.

    Beauty

Sorry, what i was trying to say was that symmetry seems to influence not determine, to an extent, among humans and animals, sexual selection. Perhaps, more among animals than humans.
  10. whenever you add the element to the flame the element absorbs some enegy (absorbtion) and its electrons jump a new enegy level. Soon after, however, its electrons return to their normal level and emit the light you see (emission). The color of the light is determined by the wavelength of the energy emited by the element as light. Therefore, the color is based on the arrangments of its electrons. Each element has its own spectrum that it emits when it emits this energy. The link budullewraagh posted is a list of these spectrums. Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but i believe that this is how we know what elements the sun contains; because we can look at the spectrum it emits.

    Beauty

Yes Albert. Some people do have one eye slightly bigger than the other, or one foot longer, or a ear that is alittle higher than the other. However, the difference is so small you can't notice unless you look very hard. However, our brains take in EVERYTHING we see. That's how people get away with subliminal messaging. You may not notice the message consiously, but you do notice it subconciously.

    Beauty

While symmetry is involved greatly in sexual selection and concepts of beauty, I am definitly for the idea that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I too saw a documentary on beauty and learned about an experiment dealing with birds; where the birds wore contrasting color bracelets on their legs. Some would have: yellow then green on both legs and others would have: yellow then green on one leg and green then yellow on the other. The ones that had the same order turned out to mate more, and produce more offspring because they were symmetrical. We all programed to be attracted to symmetry because it is a sign of health and good genes. However, all of this is entirely subconsious. The consious part, I believe allows for the variations in taste/style. However, defining beauty in its entirety is moving into more of a philosophical argument which one could argue for years.

    GM Foods

Right now i believe that any and all Genetic engineering of crops should be should be limited entirely to research until it becomes necessary to feed the earth's growing population. I did a project a while ago on this same topic and found a few incidents where GM foods caused severe problems. Malthus - Population grows exponentially, agriculture grows arithmatically (2,4,8,ect.) (1,2,3, ect.)
  14. when i have to calculate the area of a circle without a calculator, I usually leave it in terms of pi. pi*r^2=A r=2 2^2=4 A=4pi Ask whoever is telling you to do this if they want an approximate or exact value. If they want exact you must leave it in terms of pi. However, if you are just doing this on your own, pick one.
  15. "1. An object at rest tend to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion at a constant speed"....unless acted upon by another force. In the case of your marble, the other force is friction. Friction eventually slows all things down. Unless, of course, the enviroment the marble is in is a vacuum. If you were to throw that marble in space, where there is no air or ground to cause friction, (assuming that it did not run into anything) it would continue at a constant speed until it reaches the ËDGE OF THE UNIVERSE...lol All the equation that ed84c gave you was saying that KE (kenetic energy) = 1/2 m (mass) times v (the speed of the object) squared. Hope that helped.
  16. grand = big gotta love Trig!
  17. Interesting. Sounds like the exact opposite of mine. Bulkier depth, smaller screen size. Doesn't even have OSD, only lights to adjust.
  18. Known by many names, (listed below) I am a member of several science forums. Howerver, I am new to this one. Still a student, but one who loves science. My favorites, though, would have to be Chemistry and Biology. Hello to all members, and welcome to all future ones!
  19. Im not sure if this is what your looking for, but: For all those who have read The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, or perhaps you saw it somewhere else, you will know that the name for the ratio which the human body seems to follow is called Phi. I don't remember any of the other body parts that follows it, but I'm pretty sure that the femur-shin (tibia/fibula) and humerous-ulna/radius have a 1.6180339887... to 1 ratio in length. Seems possible that this may apply to other body parts as well. However, i do not know any specific linear function for those two parts.
  20. Currently learning spanish, but once you learn spanish you can read some french and most portugese because of the similarities.
  21. Concerning your problem with time delay/ lag for communication between minds: There are many theories for supraluminal , or instantanious, communication. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card was the first Sci-Fi book I have read discussing the ansible, but I think that the first person who came up with it was Ursula Le Guin because I also read about it in her novel, The Dispossessed. The ansible is basically a form of binary data transfer without time delay. However, I don't remember any details about its explanation or discovery. While I believe that instantaneous communication is far beyond our reach, perhaps a superior being or beings may have mastered it. Yet, as far-fetched as the idea seems, I believe that it is, in some way, possible to communicate instantaneously.
  22. One of the only reasons I would vote for Kerry....hmmm....so not to vote for Bush. Plus I despise Cheney's ideas.
