  1. That's correct. I'm not so sure about the ISP seeing "random encripted traffic" though. I don't think that all data is encrypted. And by looking at other things you can often guess what it is. Say someone had multiple connections using port 6881 and a lot of data was being sent to multiple different IPs, flowing in both directions (down/uploading), it sounds very much like BitTorrent.
  2. Ha, I just posted that in another thread, then came here and was going to repeat it, to find you beat me to it! Like he said, largest particle to show wave-particle duality is a buckminsterfullerene (Carbon-60).
  3. Remembering that wave-particle duality is a consequence of the uncertainty principle; the double slit experiment has been performed with buckminster fullerenes. These massive C60 molecules showed interference, despite their size. When the demon is working with molecules he cannot avoid the uncertainty principle. Furthermore atoms do not need to be cooled for the effect to become apparent.
  4. IE6, WinXP SP1, all works fine. Maybe she has an overprotective firewall that has an issue with JavaScript. Try deleting all cookies, temp internet firewalls (on/offline) etc. She is using IE6, but is she using WinXP? I know you can get IE6 on Win98. I do have a computer with that setup in the other room, would you like me to try the slideshow on that computer? (it's really no problem to me, it's just in the other room)

  6. What exactly are you trying to do? By the sounds of it you want to put your SCART lead into your home made circuit and then feed that into, your TV? Speakers? If you draw a current from a SCART lead that is in use it could possibly corrupt the signal or, at least, weaken it. One SCART lead doesn't cost too much, so I'd say; try it! And tell us how it goes.
  7. That sounds reasonable. He needs to know the momentum of the particle to calculate whether to let it through or not. He also needs to know the position so he knows when to block/unblock the connection between the boxes. He can't know both of these parameters (in the detail he requires) due to the uncertainity principle, therefore he can't do his job, or at least he can't do it properly.
  8. Are you using it in the same room that you have been using it in for the last few months? If you just moved to a new place which might have metal reinforced walls or something... I'm not sure, to be honest.

  10. I know generally physics prevents the demon existing, or says that when you analyse the whole system the entropy does increase, but what specifically does QM have against it? Sure it would make the demon's job harder, what with quantum tunneling, but why does QM actually forbid it?

    I'm guessing when you do this (with acid powder) there is no reaction? If the boric acid is very weak the reaction could take a long time. So maybe try disolving the powder in less water.
  13. I'll keep it short too then. I'm thinking less of the Wal-Mart and more of those nukes, in warheads, on missiles... I wouldn't trust N.Korea's leader with a handgun, let alone a nuclear bomb.
  14. The question has been answered, and this is the conclusion I reached the other day. Initially I thought about observing at a point. I realised that, at a point, the photons could cancel, just like a dark fringe. This sounded wrong though, if the two photons just cancelled, where does the energy go? The answer lies in the setup. We were observing at a point, we should have been thinking about the whole system, not just a single point. If you look at the whole system then you will have fringes (dark/light). So although at a point it can be dark, this just means that the photons are somewhere else, in a light fringe. From this we concluded that the photons, as such, cannot cancel. The photons will always exist, basic conservation of energy. However the probability waves of the photon, or just the light waves, can cancel. This is what you see when you look at a dark fringe.
  15. Cool. It is common thing when downloading big files that they don't have the expected file extension. Often they are zipped with the .rar extension. You need to unzip this with winRAR. This sometimes get people because they expect anything zipped to be .zip, this is not the case. The other most common suprise is to get, as aj47 got, a CD image. Extensions like: .iso .cue .bin .mds are all CD image files. You open them all using a Virtual CD program, such as Demon Tools (see post #3).

    Although you can get them. I've seen IR-only binoculars on sale before. They're considered more specialist, you'd need to find a specialist shop or somewhere on the Internet where you could buy them. They're probably quite expensive though.
  18. .bin is a disk or CD image, kind of like cue or iso files. Try getting something like Demon Tools: http://www.techspot.com/download208.html Install that Run it (it opens a prog which runs in the system tray) Right click on the system tray Go to the Virtual CD/DVD Select a drive and click Mount Image Then just browse and select the .bin file Then go to my computer and it will appear (or it might auto start) like a normal CD. Except there's on physical CD, hence it's known as a virtual CD drive.

    If you sent them an email then they've now got some of the info they want! Along with your name, so now they can sell it on and send you spam! You're probably not automatically put on their database, so don't start panicbing, but still, that's what came into my mind.

  22. Took me a while, but I think I understand, this is hard for me. That's a good answer, but I interpretted Skye's question differently. I read it as: in a system with one atom and one photon, can you teleport a second state, at the same time, onto the same atom. To which I answered: no, an atom can only hold one quantum state. Changing any part of the system gives it a new quantum state. One atom can only hold one state. Your (Martin's) answer is better because it takes a more real life situation in which there are "hundreds of billions of atoms". In this system, as you increase the number of states (ie. the number of photons) being stored on the set of atoms, the fidelity will decrease. If that was intuitive; "don't wait for permission----venture an explanantion or a guess" .

  24. Yep Sisyphus, Maxwell's Demon would work, in theory. I think there might be some technical issues with the delivery and installation of it though . Just a quick summar for those who don't know, Maxwell's Demon is a thought experiment. In the original there is a demon which can see things on a molecular level, and it sits between two boxes (A and B) which are linked. The demon lets fast moving particles into A, but doesn't let them out. At the same time he lets slow moving particles into B, but doesn't let them out. The overall effect is that box A increases in temperature whilst box B lowers in temperature, all of this without the demon adding any energy to the system. This defies the second law of thermodynamics. There are various responses to this. Some include taking note of the fact that to observer the molecules energy, say photons, would be needed. Also the Demon itself would need to use energy to stop some particles, and to move out the way of others.
  25. Aww, you're good! I tried the not breathing thing, it seemed to taste the same. Haven't tried the solidifying part yet. I'll probably get around to it sometime next week.
