  1. I guess they didn't teach the part about turning the other cheek that day.
  2. The fact that you said my lack of knowledge about the bible was getting annoying. I've barely bothered engaging you on this topic, especially not for at least the last several weeks/months.
  3. I answered your question. I have read the bible. Flood stories are quite common since most cultures and settlements arose near water sources. You also seem to be confusing me with someone else.

People are replacing Calvin with Donald Trump in 'Calvin and Hobbes' while leaving the speech bubbles unchanged, and it's kinda perfect: http://uproxx.com/webculture/donald-trump-calvin-and-hobbes/3/ Lots at the link. Two selections below:
  6. Perhaps a place to start (but not end) your discovery of this field, Raider: http://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/focus-areas/what-powered-the-big-bang/ http://scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/2012/02/09/the-big-bang-for-beginners/
  7. Uhm, what? You're not making sense. Instead of referring people to previous posts that have already been described as unclear, the onus is on you to convey your point another way to ensure accurate understanding.
  8. I understand, don't disagree in spirit, and want you to be well. Thought of this for some reason: Cheers!
  9. My preference would be for science to be used primarily to help us realize more of our potential and to be focused less on trying to find new ways to change ourselves. I concede, however, that my opinion is limited to my own experience and should in no way way be used to prevent others from pursuing whatever path they feel is best for their own personal wellbeing.
  10. I certainly think we will continue to advance our understanding of the brain and make strides in our abilities to alter genetics and change certain traits. What I struggle with is how you're equating homosexuality (whether intentionally/consciously or not) with mental illness, schizophrenia, autism, and others. Basically, I question the premise of why we'd ever want to, especially when you refer to CRISPR technology which would mandate doing all of this before fertilization or in the womb, hence would not be a personal choice of the individual and how they themselves feel about their own sexuality. No... somebody would be doing this TO them based on reasons related to social biases and prejudices.
  11. Well... I suppose there could be changes made using lobotomy or shock therapy or TMS if (for incredibly unlikely reasons that are entirely unrelated to the passing and generational whims and biases of the public) one wanted to forcibly change their thinking about sexual issues.
  12. For the ethical issues explained above, science as a general rule isn't wasting a lot of research dollars trying to figure out how to change someone's neural structure in ways that will change their sexual or gender preferences. The premise itself is flawed, IMO. You're looking for a type of "plastic surgery for the mind" that simply doesn't exist and worse still that is motivated and inspired mostly by religious and societal intolerance.
  13. IMO, they can. Also, this: The idea that this is some binary state is part of why the ignorance continues to unnecessarily perpetuate. [mp][/mp] Is anyone talking about denying this? You've confused me. The point I'm hearing is that we must let people be who they are and stop trying to force every square peg to fit through society's rigid rectangular hole.
  14. Exactly. This conversation would be moot (and mute, frankly) if society weren't so inundated and inculcated with long outdated outmoded under educated puritanical gender norms.
  15. To the thread title, former Labor Secretary under Bill Clinton, Robert Reich makes some interesting points here: http://robertreich.org/post/139385548525
  16. Not just Trump. Per last nights GOP debate, Cruz, Christie, Bush, and others all said that they'd support continued use of water boarding if they became president and that it could help save lives and by definition isn't torture / is just "enhanced interrogation." One thing you might realize is that effectiveness and empirical support of a proposal is not a high priority for republican ideas or voters who have done amazing things with social media reinforcing the alternate reality bubble.

  19. You can just post it somewhere else. No need to be abrasive. There's nothing stopping you from starting a thread in one of the existing topic buckets. Now that you mention it, though... Might be better to discuss adding a geology or dendrology forum, as you seem to have a chip on your shoulder that needs extraction.

Long time climate change denier and foe of NASA and science, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was just named as chair of the Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness, where he will oversee NASA and science programs. Fellow climate change denier Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) will also chair the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and the Coast Guard. Oh wait, that's not a joke. This really just happened. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/12/ted-cruz-nasa_n_6456270.html Wtf. Seriously, America?
  24. Tone, intonation, and visual cues don't translate well through text, especially on a site like this where membership tends to be skewed toward precision and pedantry (myself included). That said, a sense of humor is mostly for ourselves anyway. If others happen to share it with us and have a quick chuckle, then good for them... happy I could help! If not though, no worries. Their loss.
  25. How about an entire forum where you can create all of the threads on the topic that your little heart desires? >> http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/28-suggestions-comments-and-support/
