  1. A simpler stance IMO is that the good things which are generally attributed to religious practice (sense of belonging, community, recognition of ideals higher than oneself, support mechanisms for dealing with loss and pain, etc.) don't themselves require religion as a prerequisite. All of those things can equally be derived from other social communities and groupings like sports teams, knitting clubs, Star Wars fans, etc. People can come together and lend one another support and comfort and grace in nearly any other social setting. Religion need not ever enter the equation. Ergo, the negative aspects of religion become amplified and more relevant to discussions like these since the negatives don't equally spread across all social / tribal groupings.
  2. And telephone counseling session leads to numbers above 30%. You said "very good" and "acceptable," and your definition seems different from mine... You must also compare the success rate of these interventions against the success rate of people who use none, NOT against "perfection."
  3. But his work is just one set of data from many decades ago, and new work / better work since then has been performed by numerous others and has consistently supported similar conclusions.
  4. It could be neither of those things. Perhaps it's just an relatively accurate read of the current sociopolitical landscape. Certain flaws in humanity are exaggerating themselves and seemingly trending in the wrong direction. Neither slippery slope nor abandonment of hope are needed to acknowledge that.
  5. I wouldn't call you a luddite, but I might suggest your view of the fast pace and capabilities of this technology is limited and perhaps lacking details, nuance, etc. Anyway, you are quite right that market valuations tend more often to come from emotion and bullishness than rationality and conservative bears.
  6. Do you? Nonsense Your comments are probably also worth ignoring until they're supported with the aforementioned systematic collection and analysis of empirical data.
  7. Why do they claim that previous brain states can’t cause changes in future brain states? That’s ridiculous. The brain does nothing but change from state to state.
  8. This doesn’t directly support my claim about where voters will go if Trump vanishes, but it is still insightful. Trump support has only grown in the past 2-3 months, same with DeSantis, yet Haley is flat in first in the nation state Iowa
  9. Hell, many guys would do it for a free slice of pizza and a smile from an attractive female. We’re hardly stoics as a culture anymore.
  10. Especially when celibacy and bluing balls are prerequisite.
  11. But my point is that’s bc Trump remains in the race. Haley is not who they’ll flow toward if he’s removed. DeSantis is. I don’t vote based on looks or skin color or who they happen to love. I vote based on who I think is the best candidate / against the candidate who is anathema to the values and principles that matter most to me. I do think she and Liz Cheney together on a ticket would be VERY hard to beat in the general election, even though they’d never make it out of the GOP primary.
  12. When religious practice wanes, humans appear to replace it rather often with less savory tribal affiliations like MAGA and Incel (and rather often both at once). Christian nationalists are Trumps strongest base, after all. It’s not just the American Taliban. It’s MAG-Qaeda! And raped children. Don’t forget about all the child raping.
  13. Capable and smart, but cynical and lacking in consistent principles. She’s a very skilled political operator who moves her position swiftly to align with the polls, but even dead leaves can go with the flow. We need leaders who shape it, not just get carried by it. At 40-60 points behind, she only stands a chance if Trump is somehow subtracted from the equation, and even then Trump voters are far more likely to flow to DeSantis.
  14. And now here we are yet again for the 4th or 7th time talking about a topic which did nothing but waste time in the first place and which was not allowed to be introduced again.
  15. Coincidental. Over interpreted. Just so. Conclusion on search for support. Fictional narrative. Not worth my time. All of the above…
  16. I mean there are diminishing returns as wages keep growing.
  17. Right, but it’s still akin to trying to push back the incoming waves from the ocean using a boogie board. Sure, I agree. The board moves some water, splish splash splosh, but that’s not really the point. This IS happening. This IS an arms race. We are likely NOT going to be best served by unilaterally disarming ourselves.
  18. Making it restricted in some countries hardly protects inhabitants of all
