  1. Ask Kim Jong Il. He threatens defectors with death.
  2. Barnum effect, that's the term I was looking for. If we have established the possibility of a cultural induction of sign traits, how about environmental? Do the seasons and their coincident climates have a detectable effect on the development of children born on that season, and possibly even in utero? Some women gain significant amounts of weight, become depressed, etc during the cold months and if these women were to be pregnant during that time, wouldn't these variables factor into fetal development? Or would the effect be miniscule?
  3. I wasn't implying that opposable thumbs were all that was necessary for intellectual evolution, but that it is an essential part to possess to even have the chance for it.
  4. If there is, it would probably have to do with people consciously or subconscioulsy assuming the characteristics of their astrological sign. For example I know a woman who jokingly excuses her dramatic antics by saying she is a leo and can't help it, or a man who says he must be a good lover because he is a Scorpio. Also, the Chinese and some other Asian countries take their astrological sign very seriously, to the point that matchmakers would arrange marriages with the children's birthyears as major deciding factor. This has got to produce some effects, even though the causes are cultural, not cosmological.
  5. How important are opposable thumbs to becoming an advanced and intellectual species? Because obviously dolphins and birds would take quite a long time in evolving such a grasping mechanism. So the question is, are such mechanisms essential for intellectual evolution? I would think yes, because tool manipulation is the first step toward technology. Thus, I would imagine that the next animal to evolve to human standards would have to have opposable thumbs or something similar.
  6. Oh, I see. Then please remove "immigration" and insert "emigration," instead.
  7. I like that. Are you by chance a business major? Because you think like one.
  8. An obvious one would be immigration laws. But also poverty and a language barrier.
  9. http://www.domehome.com/ I want one these in the future when I buy some mountain property. It's kind of radical, but I like it.
  10. No, it's your circadian rhythm. Humans along with many animals and plants have developed a natural daily cycle. During wakefulness, your brain produces different chemicals than when asleep. These chemical releases are set by an internal clock, the effects of which are difficult to override. Check out the Wiki link which can explain better than I.
  11. Well, the device is fictional, so in accordance with the intentions of the creator, I would have to assume that it doesn't harm the wearer. However, as Coral pointed out, yes that would be a tricky manuver. I thought we could discuss rape-repellents, their practicality and their possible implications. My personal opinions on this would be that it wouldn't realy work as a deterant. Why? First, as Obnoxious already mentioned, rapists may learn to check for and remove the device. Second, rape is about violence first, sexual gratification second, therfore the perp may just as well enjoy beating the life out of the victim wihtout penetration. The device may even have lent the woman a false sense of empowerment, which incidentally could have led her into a questionable situation in the first place. So, is there a better measure against rape? If so, what would be an option?
  12. http://femdefence.info/index2.html Should this product be produced and marketed?
  13. This sounds tricky...and math is not my strong suit. Edit: Is this a trick question, or a valid one? I had a tentative answer, but I don't think it is correct.
  14. If the thoughts of earth stability were true, we'd all be living in Pangaea. I have a question regarding the main topic: I am not well read in nuclear physics, but would there be a possible way to recycle and reuse some if not all of that radioactive waste? Or do reactors produce an absolutely unusable byproduct?
  15. Actually almost all physicists believe that the universe is not composed of space existing in a passing time frame, but that we as a matter fact exist in a space-time, a physical environment composed of three spatial dimensions and one dimension of time. The four dimensions are thought to have been created simultaneously with the BB. If what you propose was true, it would be the same time on earth as it is on a planet some lightyears away, but Special Theory of Relativity proposes that is not the case; there is no universal standard of time.
  16. 2. neonate. 1. sorus (sg.), sori (pl.).
  17. Sayonara, Yep, you are right. There is a difference.
  18. It's HTML code for a space, like when you normally press a spacebar. Edit: too late with the response, it may be deleted.
  19. Hmm...historically, it would seem that elite minorities often had little trouble dominating the less-priviledged masses.
