I have been given a quantity of TO-92 transistors with the National Semiconductor brand on them. However, I cannot identify them. When I asked National, they told me they sold their discrete line to Fairchild in 1997. The Fairchild Web site isn't very tech-question friendly, and singularly bereft of eddresses, so I'm going to ask here in a better hope of getting an answer. There are two types; all have colour codes on the back: 427 A05 yellow-red-purple 333 A05 silver-silver-silver Anyone have any inkling? Only three colour bands doesn't sound particularly useful, but.. Thanks!

I want to purchase a thermal ammeter. I am not sure if that is the common name for the instrument. The ammeter measures the temperatur change undergone when the current runs through the instrument and then determines the current that must of run through it. I would appreciate any help in finding a distributor or manufacturer of this type of ammeter. David

I am using an analogue ammeter to make current and voltage measurements. The analogue meter utilizes and electromagnet; it is not heat based. I am curious if their is a bandwidth for which this type of meter is accurate. I know that digital, hand- held multi-meters have bandwidths that are usually limited to between 40 Hz and 100Hz. David

What companies or individuals sell spark gaps? I am searching unsuccessfully on the internet for a manufacturer or dealer of vacuum spark gaps. There are no vacuum spark gaps sold on ebay. I am seeking a vacuum spark gap to replace an air spark gap in my 250 KV Tesla Coil. I would appreciate any advice, David

I was going to post this a while back but got stuck into some uni work so here it is... I wanted a magnetic stirrer but I didn't want to pay $100+ for one so I decided to make it from what I had in the garage. The idea was to use an old fan, a couple of magnets, a stirrer bar and a power supply. Here's the list of things that I used, remember that you can use a vast range of alternatives depending on what you're going to use the stirrer for (I need(ed) it for a couple of chem experiments): - 12 V (0.15A) fan from an old power supply - 6 x neodymium disk magnets (4 x 5mm) - magnetic stirrer bar (white, coated) - power supply (5-6V) - 5 pieces of wood, 6 na…

for a photography enlarger (Jessop 3500) screw fitting. it has to be between 2.5 and 8.5x magnification. but if you just have the lens itself that`ll be fine too, I can probably machine something to fit. from what I can tell it has to be a `D` shape convex type, but if you have a multiple lens array that will do the same that`s good too I can`t pay a Huge amount (it`s a simple lens!), I`m after something nobody wants/needs anymore, postage will be covered and a cost if needed. cheers

I had an odd piece of glassware that needed an application, and it So reminded me of a thermometer, that I figured Why not! top down: I`m using methylated spirits in it, this stuff in the UK has a purple color, so I added a little Rhodamine B to it to make the color a little more visible. it`s accuracy is amazing with a resolution of 5 degrees c over 8mm. although it`s not a very Fast thermometer, in a room where theres slow temp changes it works great! it`s also under a partial vacuum as I heated the liquid up to 50c and then sealed the top. I`ll find a nice piece of wood somewhere and mount the whole thing on it eventually, maybe put it on a …

You've probably heard of x-ray crystallography as it is a very common and useful technique used to analyse bond distances, angles etc - in simple terms - probe the atomic arrangement in crystals. Last year we had to learn in-depth how this method works and the apparatus behind it so I got that down pretty well. If you're already wondering - NO I don't know how to make one at home However, something occured to me recently. If you think about it, those green lasers have a bit smaller wavelength than the red ones, at around 532nm, and they are also better-visible to the human eye, not to mention that a decently-powered green laser can be purchased for around $80 these days.…

Looking at a supplier website, I found a cautionary statement that they could ship no laboratory glassware or other equipment to anyone placing an order from the State of Texas! It seems a regulation has been imposed that requires a PERMIT from the Texas Department of Public Safety to purchase or possess lab apparatus! This was imposed as a means to thwart the use of such equipment to manufacture illegal drugs. Consider the enormous number of commercial concerns, schools, R & D operations, not to mention amateur experimenters, who now must pay a fee to obtain a permit, in order to continue work. Does anyone have additional information pertaining to this, s…

Hello - I have been searching to purchase some special vials, these vials are called "Accuform Microvials" by Kimax. I like to acquire only six or so,with threaded caps, clear glass. with a capacity of about 1 ml or < I have included a photo of the type of vial I am seeking But so far in my search I have found them listed by various companies, but they only sell in by the case, generally that costs around 96.00 dollars or so, trying to avoid this kind of cost since I only like to acquire about six total, but I can't seem to find any place that sells these vials in smaller quantities? Any help or advice with this small problem, will be greatly appreciated. …

  15. Hiya, I am new to this forum so feel a bit cheeky asking for help first off but my brain is in totally blonde mode. I am a third year degree student and my project is in novel antimibrobial products... I plan to look at levels of inhibition at depth thus simulating wound depth but my mental block is with the methodology. I plan to puncture agar at different depths, inocculate these depths with MRSA and then apply the antimicrobial and asses its properties from this, but i cant think of a standard peice of equipment from which to do this as i need something deep like a beaker but it needs to be able to be sealed and the flatter the better for visable colony counting... i…

  17. In salvaging some [very] old PCBs, I came across an interesting little item: a 50mm × 50mm × 10mm DC-DC converter: 5VDC to ±15VDC. Perfect for op-amp breadboarding.. The same board had several socketed DT201A chips (outsized DIP-24) that probably also relate to power conditioning or the like. It's labeled a "DATA TRANSLATION DT15150" and I can find lots of references to that online in the surplus parts categories. However, so far I haven't found anything that defines its specs. I'd like to know what the voltage and current limitations are, but short of disinterring an old hardware design lab I'm not sure where I'd find 'em. The 'Data Translation' company as such …

Refluxing is often an important part in Chem, esp some of the organic synths. but the condensers and "Quickfit" apparatus can be quite expensive and you also need constant running water etc... so here is a Very simple and cost effective way to get the same result! this shows what you will need for 2 of them: this is the 500ml version in 2 pictures because it`s quite tall: so as you can see, all you`ll need will be a long necked round bottom flask, a stopper to fit this with a hole drilled through it, and a long glass tube that fits inside this hole. then along the tube I put several small transistor heat sinks on it. I`ve used this apparatus…

Hey everyone again. It's been a long time since I've checked things out here on SFN. A lot of changes... Anyway, tonight I finally got around to taking apart an old guitar hero controller. I've kept the circuit boards thinking there might be something interesting they could be used for. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about circuits and electronics (really my weakest area in engineering studies so far). So does anyone have any ideas on something good that this can be used for and how one might go about doing so? Thanks.

  22. I had the opportunity to pick up "How to measure anything with electronic instruments" (John A. Keucken) from the local Half Price Books store. The book consists of circuits, schematics, diagrams, and some basic theoretical explanations. All pretty neat. Are there any other resources for making "any" electronic instrument or measuring anything? More recently, my interests have been in figuring out how to do chemical analysis ("do it yourself" chemistry instrumentation), though I would appreciate the help of anybody with some information and links. - Bryan BTW, contents of the Keucken book specifically include: zero current voltage measurement, ammeter, re…
