    apparently copper chloride is the one to use for the best blue. what i want to do is soak my wicks (Kevlar) in a liquid version it, let them dry so the copper chloride is then a solid, theoretically a powder, throughout the weave of the wick which can then be lit and burn blue. The wicks are for a fire staff, they are 63mm wide, 200mm long and 4mm thick. So not your average candle wick. Would this work? If so how do I make the copper chloride? or is there another substance that would be more appropriate?

    Hello. I would like to carry out an investigation on plastics/polymers. My questions are: 1. What are the latest researches chemists doing? 2. Are there researches suitable to be done in a high school laboratory? 3. Where should I look for the relevant information? Thanks a lot!

    Hey all, I want to collect, in a chamber of some sort, the secondhand smoke of many smokers. The goal of this is the deposition of most, if not all, chemicals and tar. How can this be readily achieved? (And yes, I have used google.) Are there certain substances that will not deposit? I'm not asking for a complete list, seeing as how there are myriad substances within cigarette smoke, but a few examples would be handy. Also, why would they not deposit? The goal is to render as pure of a deposit film as possible. Can this be achieved?

    Hey there forum, the other day I was "exploding" some potassium with water, I know becase of what I saw that the reaction is: 2 K + 2 H2O ---> 2 KOH + H2 My question is, considering there's extra water, the reaction would continue as following? KOH + H2O ---> KOOH + H2 Does that happens? And the water is still caustic? Does another reaction take place after that one?

    I've been attempting to recreate this experiment (link), but without using a hydrogen cylinder. The only problem is, that no matter which acid or metal i use, no matter how fast i generate the gas, my bubbles don't float. They burst into flame nicely but they don't float. I'm not sure what's causing the bubbles to be so heavy... is it gaseous water?

    I am new to the forum and need help on a very practical problem. I have obtained a very large number of medical catheters, sterile in packaging, that have platinum electrodes on them. I have been removing them by hand and now have a large quantity of them. The electrodes themselves are pure platinum, but each electrode had a small gauge copper wire soldered to it with tin/lead (60/40) solder. I can heat the electrodes pretty high because they are platinum, but that doesn't remove the residual solder or copper. The electrodes are thin wall and tubular, ~ 1-2mm diameter and 2-5mm in length. The wires were spot-soldered to the inside of the electrode. I'm working with electr…

    1. Write a balanced chemical equation to represent the reaction between iodine and propanone in acidic medium. 2. Explain why the concentration of iodine in the reaction mixture can be expressed in terms of the volume of sodium thiosulphate added. 3. Does iodine take part in the rate determining step of the reaction between iodine and propanone? Thanks a lots!

    Ok, so I read other posts on using epsom salt as an electrolyte, and copper electrodes with 9v to create copper sulfate. This method apparently worked for some people, but my water isn't blue, it's yellow. I tried to think of anything that's yellow, and came to sulfur. It's a really fine yellow powder suspended in the solution, and I'm not sure what it is. I'd sniff it, but that doesn't seem very wise. Any ideas? Thanks:-) I just touched it, to see if any temperature change had occurred, and it feel slightly warm, compared to the copper/water mixture I have sitting next to it in an identical container.

  14. I have it on good authority (GPA-2145 09) that burning 1 M3 (ideal) of methane at 15 Deg. C and 101.325 kPaa, and then letting the combustion products cool back to 15 Deg. C will provide a net of 37.708 MJ of energy. How would a person recalculate the heating value if a different reference / combustion condition was used? I tried the following but didn't get what I expected: CH4 + 2 O2 --> CO2 + 2 H2O molar density at 15 C and 101.325 = P / R T (ideal). = 101.325 / (8.31451 * 288.15) * 1000 mol/kmol= 42.2923 mol Molar HV = 37.708 MJ / 42.2923 mol = 891.604 kJ/mol at 15 C Delta H (CH4) = Cp * moles * Delta T = 0.035 kJ/(mol.K) * 0.55556 K = 19.4 J /…

    I am trying to make steel bolts and nuts rust so that I can determine the amount of torque needed to unscrew the nut from the bolt. I have searched the forum and found diverse and conflicting information about the various chemicals so I thought I was post this as a new topic. I have tried various recipes and combinations of chemicals to make bolts rust and/or corrode, I am not talking about a pretty patina on the surface but so that nuts are hard to remove from the bolts. What are your recommendations for chemicals, ratios, durations, etc., and why. Why do you think of common household bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide and in what ratio/mix? How would Vinegar affe…

  21. I am doing research on the partitioning coefficent of Radon in the gas and liquid phase with respect to salinity. I ran into a snag when I failed to realize Instant Ocean (approximate ocean salt material) froths when gas is bubbled. I have a small Dryrite tube and can't modify the rest of the tubing (system has been calibrated for the exact gas volume) and the problem is once any liquid gets into the dryrite tube (meant for humidity only) it turns into a rock. So basically I need to figure out something I can put before the dryrite that is only gas permeable but wont absorb radon. Any suggestions?

    A friend of my is starting to become obsessive about contaminants in his food and drink, and recently has decided that using a plastic kettle to boil water for tea is building up toxic levels of Bisphenol A in his body. I am less convinced that this is anything more than a media beat-up, but I have no evidence to base this on. This is not his only theory, and he tends to believe in a lot of so-called alternative medicines and other far more obviously bogus science, so that may colour my perception of this latest obsession. My question is as follows. Is Bisphenol A a problem in the levels most people are exposed to, and even if it is, is the plastic used to make a kett…

    cool take a look at this video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tAsOfqCy4A0 cool isn't it? is it just as simple as sulfur hexaflouride in a tank and a foil boat or is there more to it? If you put that stuff in a glass container with glitter in would it do the same thing as those snow storm souvenir ornament things with the man in which you shake?

    Hi. Salty water does conduct electricity, but after it dries, it does not. Can someone suggest some household doable type of fluid, that applied on a surface -say glass-, can conduct some electrical current after dried ? I need a minuscule quantity, about 1 cubic millimeter to restore an indium-tin oxide trace on a LCD display. Silver ink is minimum $50.
