Hello All: I'm new, and this is my first post. I hope I am in the correct forum. If not, please let me know where to post. I'm experimenting with NiFe batteries, and have constructed a small set. I would like to build a larger bank, but the cost of nickel is prohibitive. Can anyone here give me any information regarding the following: 1. Can nickel plated material be used instead of a nickel bar? 2, What other materials might be used for anodes/cathodes? 3. What other chemicals could be used for electrolyte? Hi, Hope someone can offer a little help. I am trying to understand the reaction of carbonation in concrete and more exactly how to accelerate the reaction ie high, low, or nil water in the concrete at a higher or lower temperature. Hoping someone can offer a little insight into the reaction Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H20 Do you need water for this reaction to take place ? I think the above reaction is Acid Base because it produces water, but CO2 isnt an acid unless it is in water (Carbonic acid). Its exothermic which means that it will react quicker at elevated temperatures - yet CO2 is more in water soluble at lower temperatures. Hence Im confus…

There is an ASTM test for hydrolyzable chloride involving dissolving sample in 45.0 mL of 0.1N KOH (MeOH), reflux, add phenolphthalein indicator, titrate with 0.1 N HCl (aq). The equation is (V-B)(N)(3.55 g Cl/eq)/(W) The volume of the sample titrated is invariable LESS than the blank. I am getting some strange results here. Does anyone have any information/suggestions/ideas? Sure would appreciate the input. Thanks!

I've put some undissolved ninhydrin in a test tube and added about 0,5 mL of conc. KOH(about 5 M). The colour changed to dark blue. I tried the same thing with ninhydrin(aq) and nothing happened. When I added H2O2 to the blue solution, CO2 started bubbling from the solution( I know it is CO2 because I tested it with Ca(OH)2 (aq) and it turned cloudy white, and after adding HCl turned clear again). Is it possible that H2O2 oxidized that blue compound to phthalic acid? What would be the structure of that compound? And can anyone propose a mechanism?

It is quite common between chemists to consume large amounts of coffee while doing lab work and/or writing scientific essays and I just wanted to ask everybody how they feel about the application of high doses of caffeine in science. After all I heard, the whole issue is double-edged. I understand that, from a scientific perspective, there is more than one kind of salt. The salt that we typically use as a seasoning on our food is called sodium chloride, aka table salt. My car is currently stuck in ice in a restaurant parking lot. I live within walking distance of this restaurant (and, as a direct result, I'm a regular customer there), but the walk (as opposed to the drive) is still F'ing brutal! Hello I am graduate student at a university working on a M.S. in environmental science. I am asking for advice on creating emulsions in water beakers with lipids (poly unsaturated fatty acids). I want to create emulsions with fatty acids like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6(n-3)). Seeing as how they are not saturated they should have some solubility in water...at pH 8 it is predicted at around a few grams/liter. However when I dispense 20 to 10 mg into a 1 L of water lipid droplets/vesicles still form, even after shaking vigorously. Hi! What is the maximum temperature(or heat) that a typical sunmica/formica sheet used on table tops can tolerate without damaging(its upper layer)? In many households, I've noticed that a hot vessel just off the stove is rarely placed directly over the tabletop; a stand or some cloth is placed between both the surfaces(to prevent apparent 'damage' to the table). The general consensus around my city seems that the kind of mica used in tabletops doesn't have much thermal resistance. Is this true?

Hello, it was recently that I had thought of the following process: U-238 goes through Alpha decay Products Th-234 and He-4 are produced He-4 has no electrons being newly emmited The He-4 inside of a vacuum goes towards a sample of Mg-24 Mg-24 gives 2 e- to the He-4 He-4 and Mg-24 both obtain full octets. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could expand on how taking the derivative dlnY/dlnx of a partition function that describes the different species ligating species, Y=1+kx, in this case a ligand, x, binding to protein with a single site creates the function for average ligation(k is the association constant). That is, after taking this derivative you get Y'=kx/(1+kx). My question is why does this work and where does this derivative come from? Is it somehow derived to get to this point or is it simply an observation?

Are there any good books that contain mostly problem sets and the answers or solutions to them? I have a piece of Alumina (Al203) to be coated with metallic multilayer of Cu-Al-Ti. I choose to use evaporation method instead of Plasma sputtering because some books says Plasma sputtering PVD cause some impurities incorporated in thin coating.. So my problem is to find the phase transition diagram of those metals because i need to know the pressure and the temperature at which the solid metals start to vaporize..
