I was just wondering what they are made of, I know the core is carbon and I think the black powder around the core is zinc chloride, is this right? Also what is the outer casing made of, is it zinc? It isnt magnetis and it looks like zinc rather than alu.

I ran out of copper sulphate, and want more. ANy easy ways to synthesize it? I think u could burn it with sulfur if im right, but that might leave me with some unusable charcoally black stuff if im correct... or am i?

I have to make a solution of 10,000ppm hypochlorite, since 1ppm is like 1mg/l for a solute in water solution. Does this mean that i have to add 10,000mg hypochlorite in 1liter water? If hypochlorite is in a liquid form, should i take into account its density and from that to find the volume i add to the water to get a totol of 1 litre? Besides; Is 1ppm the same like 1mg/l ? Or does it depend in other factors like both the densities of the solute and solvent? Thanks for any inputs.

Last week I was filtering a high concentration solution of H2SO4 solution with some standard filter paper. Once this was done, I placed it in a oven at around 110 degrees C to dry. When I took it out after about twenty minutes, I noticed that the filter paper had changed to a black colour and that it had degraded and of course I had lost my damn results! Does anybody know what is happening here? I've also try this with Nitric acid and HCl and my results have worked out ok.

Is this compound possible? Someone asked me and I wasn't sure. I mean, Mg is +2 and O is -2, so you would think you'd just get MgO. But what if you had the Mg bonded to two O, and then those two O bonded to a third, to make like a square. Would that be stable?

I heard it was possible to make a fuel cell with 2 beakers and a salt bridege, one beaker with dilute acid, one with dilute base, and sometin with bubling o2 and h2 through it and sometin bout electrodes. Does anyone know a little better how i could make one. I thought it would be cool for my Hydrgoen fuel project im doing.

Is the aluminum we use in real life the actual Al(s) from the periodic table or is it like Al2O3, since there is oxygen everywhere so it changes? If it is the Al2O3, how would this interfere with the results from a experiment where a strip of Aluminum was part of the reactant but in the eqn its Al(s). I did experiment 2Al(s) + 3CuCl2.2H20 (aq)---> 3Cu(s) + 2AlCl3 + 6H20 THe purpose was to find how much copper was produced. So if its not Al(s) that I used but Al2O3, how would this affect the amount of copper produced. Ne ideas need help. Also could someone plz tell me what deionized water is. Is it pure water containing nothing else. Or does it have some mi…

Hi everyone. From what I remember, the highest electronegativity differential between two metals, the larger the voltage obtainable in a battery when those metals are used as its anode and cathode. Did I remember well? Using easy to get and cheap materials; as aluminium, copper, iron, carbon, lead, zinc... which two would yield the highest potential ¿lead and copper? Am trying to build a simple seawater cell to activate an ultrasonic beacon at expense of the electrodes. An electronic circuit transforms the cell output to a higher voltage for circuit operation. Current capability is proportional to electrodes area. Thanks, Miguel

Last night I was looking over a bunch of my elements, and I realized that some elements have some really cool looking oxidation to them. Scandium and Bismuth both have a multitude of different colors to them from the different thicknesses of the oxide coating. The scandium in particular looks really neat because the colors are quite pearlescent and the base color is kind of yellowish. The bismuth just has really intense blues, golds, reds, purples, and other colors of the rainbow. Potassium has a neat look to it............. to a certain extent. When the oxidation is first starting, it has a violet colored taffy-looking oxidation to it. Sadly, as the oxidation furth…

Does any one know how much a certain volume of nanotubes (single or multi-walled will do) would weigh, as well as an equivalent volume of mammalian skeletal calcium? Which is "stronger," and which has greater flexibility?

I thought of a method to prepare sodium chloride solid. First, pour a certain amount of hydrochloric acid into sodium hydroxide, add a few drops of methyl orange with titration, stop when the colour turns from yellow to red. There are some excess acid mixed with a solution of sodium chloride. Evaporate with steam bath and get the filtrate (crystal), wash it with distilled water and dry it. Is it a good method? Moreover, I want to ask why the change of pH value is very little when an acid is adding to an alkali.

i once saw an experiment with H202 which made me remeber the name... it must have been something cool but now i cant remember what, Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is something you can buy at the drug store. What you are buying is a 3-percent solution, meaning the bottle contains 97-percent water and 3-percent hydrogen peroxide. Most people use it as an antiseptic. It turns out that it is not very good as an antiseptic, but it is not bad for washing cuts and scrapes and the foaming looks cool. so knowing this, assuming its cheap; 1) what can i do with hydrogen peroxide H202? 2) how can i seperate it from the water? evaporation?

Well its official .... after 2 terms of basic Chemistry .... Chemistry is not my cup of tea sigh ---- I find it interesting and it certainly is key in life processes but as a pure science .. it just ain't speaking to me I've returned to school at the ripe age of 49 - moving from hi-tek hell (R+D) to Allied Health care studies. I'm a science junkie and I've always chewed up math - physics - earth sciences - electronics, but chem is chewing me up right now. So I'll be adjusting my major to less chem focused area. This is a real surprize - I thought I'd be chewing through chem and struggling with Biology and Anatomy and Physiology - but just the opposite is true. I'm…

If I hypothetically found 200+ lbs of fertlizer grade kno3 crystals in broken bags, which fell off a farm truck, on the side of a road last weekend and brought the stuff home in trash bags... What possible uses does KNO3 have besides the common pyro BP and sugar mixtues? What could i make out of 200 pounds of KNO3? I have heard that Nitric acid can be made from it, but where would i get the conc. H2SO4? Pb car batteries maybe? What other neat stuff can be synthesized from a large amount of KNO3? It seems to be very pure based on some testes i have conducted.

I am going to make a smoke bomb. It goes like this. 60/50 ratio. Black powder with sulfur powder. I have both. I am going to use like 3 grams of powder and 4 grams of sulfur. In a cup or something. It said the powder will burn off the sulfur and make a white smoke. Is this true? I don't want it to explode. I am going to start it by inserting a hot red wire.

I just saw this really cool fireworks display out my bedroom window and I though: How can I make my own firework? (hopefully from household stuff) Ive put it under chemistry as im sure it involves mixing chemicals together! but how would i go about making one? (preferably a really cool one e.g. big and colourfull)

I've been looking for an XRD of Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) to compare it with an XRD i've done myself, problems is I can't find one on the internet anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? If anyone knows where the peaks would occur between 0 and 70 degrees then that would be a big help too. cheers

Hi everyone, I'm doing a project on the magnetic moments of some lanthanide ions. Specifically Ce III Nitrate, Pr III Nitrate, Dy III Nitrate and Er III Nitrate. I calculated the magnetic moments for the ions using their term symbols. I think I may have bodged them up though and I wanted to check with someone whether this was the case. Term symols for the level lying lowest in energy: Ce+3: 2F5/2 Pr+3: 1S0 (J=0 clearly not good) Dy+3: 8S1/2 (gives a huge magnetic moment) Er+3: 6H5/2 Thanks for any help, Natski
