I've looked into how glow sticks work, but wonder if there would be any way to make edible ones using foodstuffs?.. I know that quinine is fluorescent, and apparently so is Vit-B12 and chlorophyll, but are there any other chemicals i could use to make them? Also, are there any chemiluminescent reactions that could be used?

Can someone help me with this problem? A 8.48 g sample of an unknown organic compound containing only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen was burned completely to produce 12.42 g of carbon dioxide and 5.08 g of water. Find the percentage of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in the compound. I just need to know how to get started, and what to do, my teacher confused herself on this one and no one in the class can do it.

ok, here`s an observation I wasn`t sure to put in Chem or Bio, and it really only applies to Smokers or someone that knows a smoker that`s game for an experiment take an ordinady copper penny (wash it) then put it in your mouth for 15- >20 mins, swish it round whatever DONT SWALLOW IT! (you`ll have lots of explaining to do at Airport security LOL) take it out then smoke a cigarette, each drag you take will taste sweet just like sugar! and it lasts for ages after you`ve removed the penny (over an hour each smoke will taste sweet!). has anyone got an explaination of the mechanism behind this? warning!!!! you DO risk swallowing the coin! and too much c…

I don't know why, tap water in my home has a undesirable smell which I couldn't tolerate. The smell is like fish smell. I've tried using different utensil to boil the water, but the smell still persist. I've decided to drink less of it each day. Does anyone know how to remove the smell? I don't want to be thirsty all the time.

branching of from posts #3 and #4 in http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17097 so as to not go off topic. I`m interested in organic oxidation mentioned, specificaly the conversion of R-OH to R-COOH (ols to oics) with KMnO4. I`m sure most are familiar with the Glycerine (1,2,3 propan triol) and KMnO4 reaction. what is it that makes it actualy Catch fire though? is there any stage where Propanoic acid is made before it catches fire, and can this reaction be slowed down (maybe dilluted in water?) and this acid extracted? secondly KMnO4 and sugar (C12H22O11) react when wetted with water giving off alot of heat, can this also be slowed down and someth…

The other day, I was making a solution of water, 10% sds and 10 M NaOH. When I addedthe sds to the water first and then the NaOH second, Almost immediately, there was a white precipitation. When I added the NaOH first and then the sds, nothing happened. Why does this happen one way and not the other, and what is the precipitant?

Are Amyl Nitrate and Amyl Nitrite two different chemicals? Some sources say they are and some say they aren't. Which is which, and why is there a difference?

Hello..thank you to all for your contributions. I enjoy reading them. I have on regular occasions had reason to produce nylon, casein plastic(though formalin is now banned)and slime goo - using guar gum and borax. I would be very eager to find a process (procedure)which could be used to make the sticky rubber that's found on novelty toy insects or on the rolling lint remover, or even the rubber stuff that's used to stick your ATM or credit card on the letter that you are posted with it. In addition, does anyone else have any other polymer making recipes?

So, in my chem lab we had to write a procedure that helps us determine the difference between natural and synthetic vitamin C. I know all the lab procedures we should use (mostly titrations, spectroscophy and the like) but I don't know what the difference is, so I don't no what techniques to use, or how to interepret those results. Can anyone help a brother out?

Can someone explain to me the precise mechanism of 1,2 cleavage by periodic acid? I understand that a cyclic periodite ester is formed, but when I count the oxygens, one seems to be missing. HO OH \ / HIO4 \ --C---C-- --------> 2x C=0 / \ H2O, THF / The periodite ester has four oxygens (two double bonded, two single) and one OH group - water must be involved, but I'm not sure how. I am assuming that in an h20 solution the periodite acid goes to IO4-, and that the H+ isn't playing a huge role. I have looked around on the net, but I haven't found anything that answers my curiosity …

can anyone help me with these questions? (1) In the Group 2 (IIA) oxalates, in what manner is the water bound? (2) what are the 2 different structures of CuSO4.5H2O? who first determined these structures and how?? Thank you.

I was looking into various types of alternative fuels, and I happened to read an article on algae being used to produce a useable oil. I have alot of seaweed nearby and I was wondering if it was possible to extract oil from this and possibly use it in a small engine. If this is possible would someone be able to explain how I would go about extracting the oil? Thanks, Newfie

For school i have to demo 2 decomposition reactions that look "cool". Since these ppl are newbie chemists they will only be impressed with stuff such as H2O2 with soap decomposing and NI3. ANy other ideas?' Edit: dumb me- i accidentally called the tittle combustion reactions

I am used to reading mass spectrums of elements with giant atomic stuctures e.g. copper and zinc so im finding this quite hard. At the moment I am looking at a mass spectrum for paracetemol (4-Hydroxy-(N-ethanoyl-aminobenzene)) which has four main m/z peaks at around 43, 80, 110 and 151. I know fragmentation will occur but i cannot account for all of them. The peak at 151 can be accounted for the unfragmented molecule and 43 for a C2H3O group but what about the rest. I would have thought the c-c bond would be most easily broken but there is no evidence for any methyl radicals? Help would be much appreciated

Anyone know how i could easily extract acetic (ethanoic) acid from common household vinegar with home made equipment? I'm bored and i happen to have some pure ethanol so i thought i would have a go at making an ester.

I recently synthesised aspirin by refluxing 2-hydroxybenzoic acid with ethanoic anhydride. Then filtering and recrystalizating with HCl I obtained about 1 or 2 grams of the impure aspirin. Hears my question, when i dried the crystals in the dessicator on filter paper it burnt a hole right through. I know ethanoic acids is a biproduct but surely its not responsible. Anyone know what happened??.

You are a physician in an emergency ward. A girl has entered respiratory collapse due to chewing on wood covered with a lead-based paint. Tests have shown [ce]PB^2+[/ce] in her blood to be 1.5 x 10^-5 mol/L. Reports have shown that [Pb] > 1.0 x 10^-9 can be considered lethal. To quickly reduce [Pb] to 1.0 x 10^-9 mol/L you have decided to inject a [ce]Na2CO3[/ce] solution directly into her blood so as to cause a [ce]PBCO3[/ce] precipitate to form [ce]K_sp = 3.3 x 10^-14)[/ce], which can be filtered from the blood by her kidneys. If her body contains 1.7L of blood, what mass of [ce]Na2CO3[/ce] is required to precipitate the Pb from her blood and bring [Pb^2+] down to 1.…

I am an athlete looking to advance my training via live high train low program. i am curious how to take oxygen out of air, or create altitude, or an hypoxic environment. i have figured i might be able to do it via an air compressor and pumping nitrogen into a tent, but i am figuring it would be difficult to monitor and i kinda don't want to die. www.altitudetraining.com has several examples, but i am looking for a cost effective alternative to buying this expensive equipment. plus, making stuff is fun.
