My specific question is how do I add a banner on my webpage using microsoft word? I've got the code for it, but I'm just not sure how to add it. I'd like to put it in the upper left hand corner of the page, so I'm assuming I'm adding some kind of "box" so that I can drag it and drop it where I want. I'm trying to avoid using big programs for this stuff. I originally built my previous page using Yahoo's HTML based program - highly unstable and crashed all the damn time. Not to mention, I couldn't just FTP the files - I had to establish a folder and let the program connect and do the publishing "transparently". I don't like that. As a result, I never, ever…

I have a Dell Inspiron 530S with an Asus WL-138G_V2 wireless network card. The card works fine in Windows Vista, but it isn't working with Fedora 7. I downloaded the Linux driver from the Asus web site, but it would not compile correctly even with the kernel headers in the correct folder. Several Linux forums suggested to use ndiswrapper to install the Windows driver. I've tried both the Windows 98 and Windows XP driver, but both of them show the error "SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory" when I try to enable the card. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a computer that I wish to sell, but before I do I want to upgrade the processor from 450mhz to 1ghz. I want to make sure that the new processor is compatible with the computer. The main thing that I'm concerned about is the difference in voltage. The specs for the two processors are here: OLD PROCESSOR: http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL364.html NEW PROCESSOR: http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL4BS.html I can't find a model number anywhere on the motherboard, but the model closest to it that I could find is the BH6 from ABIT: http://www.motherboard.cz/mb/abit/bh6.htm The difference with that one is that on mine there is only one ISA slot an…

I also need to upgrade a processor on another motherboard. This one is an Intel CA810: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/ca810/sb/cs-012832.htm It says that the processor connects to the motherboard through a 370-pin PPGA socket. My question is, will original FC-PGA chips work on this motherboard, as long as the specs match those in the chart? It doesn't specifically state that it's PPGA only, and since they're just variations on the same 370-pin slot, would it still work? I ask this because I can't find many regular PPGA chips that are higher than about 50mhz. Ken

I need a system for my website (yes, it can be a standalone, it can be its own portal.. whatever.. i'll take anything at this point) that accepts files from users (Images only with the name of the 'author' and a short explanation) and stores them in a db with these details. Either a db with these details or a folder and an accompanying database.. whatever.. The thing is this: We (at work) want to do a competition of drawings. We want people to send their drawing with an explanation and preferably a category (we're willing to be flexible..) and it will be stored on the system for a committee to view and choose winners. The catch, however, is that we want the im…

When I upgraded to Gutsy, someone told me that I didn't have enough RAM, even though I had the minimum required of 256 MB. So I put the idea of installing Xubuntu on the shelf. I did not really have any problems with Gutsy at first, but I have updated it a few times already. Now, I keep getting this sporadic baby crawl activity on the internet. I doubt that it is a RAM issue, but I am wondering if there is anything I can do. It doesn't seem like an internet traffic issue, because Saturday night should be just as free as Sunday night. Saturday night, it was slow. Sunday night, it was fast. Now, it is slow again. I have no extra programs running, but who knows w…

I have a question. I am thinking of upgrading my PC and am wondering about whether I should install 32 or 64 bit Vista. I keep reading everywhere that 32 bit Vista only supports 3GB of RAM, and since the PC I was thinking of buying has 4GB or RAM, I would need 64 bit Vista to get the best out of it. However, I am confused as to why a 32 bit operating system should only support 3GB of RAM. 1GB is 10243B=230B while a 32 bit operating system should be able to handle 232B=4x230B=4GB. So why are we losing the extra GB? By my calculation the 32b operating system should just be able to handle 4GB of RAM.

Hey guys, I'm writing a registration page in PHP again, and I was thinking of adding an option to "Check if Username is available". I want the registration process to be as userfriendly as possible, so sending the person out of the page (as in - using php routines to do that) and then telling him the username already exists is a pain for the user, or a serious pain for me (i will need to store his pre-supplied fields and return them again to the registration page so he doesn't have to type 'em all again.. pain!) So.. is there a way of making a little "check if user exists" pane? I was thinking perhaps an iframe with access to php script.. but i'm not sure if that …

My PC is acting weird. I now have 12.9 GB free hard disk space in C drive,2.59 GB free in D and 1.75 GB free in E. Three days ago, I formated my C drive and installed a new copy of windows. Same day, I had a problem of "Generic Host error" frequent popup. I tried a few things(a few virus and spyware scans) and then I tried to repair windows. I got the error message "windows can't access a mass storage device and may ask you for drivers during setup" and after sometime, setup will terminate. So, I took the easy way out of re-formating the C drive and this time I installed a different copy of windows. On same day, when I used the restart button on CPU, I couldn't login aft…

I think I need to get a new DVD drive, but this one is practically brand new, maybe a year old. When I press the button to open the carriage, the light comes on, it starts to open, but it goes back in and stays shut. Now I would automatically assume that this was a DVD problem, however, I have had a lot of program errors lately, computer freezing up, done quite a bit of hard shutdowns. I was wondering, is it possible that this is caused by a software issue, like maybe in the BIOS? I updated to the newest version of Ubuntu and that didn't help the DVD. I am just thinking that maybe with all of the hard shutdowns, something may have happened that a new DVD player would…

Hey, Okay.. picture this: A remote Unix server with freeBSD, php, mysql. A php.ini file that's been changed and tweaked repeatedly, with no success. One annoying - repeating - error message: Cannot load session extension. Please check your PHP configuration. One, very frustrated, moo. Egh. Okay, I uploaded the files of phpMyAdmin, wrote the most basic stuff in the 'config.inc.php' file, then went to php.ini and made sure sessions are enabled, they are. The session details in the php.ini file are: session.name=PHPSESSID session.autostart=1 session.cookie_lifetime=0 session.cookie_domain= …

Okay, first off, I'm just a little above complete newbie concerning C. I tried to learn it and got as far as pointers. Those I could not understand, no matter which tutorial I tried. So if anyone could propose a quality one, that would be great. But that's not the reason I'm writing this. I've been on-off working on this primitive program that would convert given units to given units. Length, weight, time, temperature, all of those. And a problem has arisen right at the beginning. My problem lies in converting small units, such as millimeters, to big length units, such as AU's or Light years. To even get the program to display such big numbers (as in the equivalent o…

Hi I recently started learning some SDL but I cant seem to get SDL_CreateRGBSurface to work. http://linux.die.net/man/3/sdl_creatergbsurface http://docs.mandragor.org/files/Common_libs_documentation/SDL/SDL_Documentation_project_en/sdlcreatergbsurface.html I have some basic code which displays a moveable image, and I want a solid color generated with createRGBSurface for my background. So when you move the image you cover up the old image w/ that part of the background and redraw the image. For some reason using 8 bit will generate an all black background (regardless of rgba values), and anything else seems to be completely null or something (the image leaves a…

I purchased an IBM System x3400 7975 server, and I can't find very much information about its power usage. It has two power supplies, and I have them both plugged in at the moment. Here is what the instruction manual says in the server specifications: The way this is written seems very confusing. It says that the server has "one of the following power supplies", yet mine came with two. Does this mean that the second one is redundant, or would an optional third one be redundant? Also, does the wattage refer to the amount of input required continuously, or is that the maximum that the server can output to the hardware components? The server can support two…

Ok, so I bought a small Western Digital passport hard drive (.5" 120gb model) the other day with the notion that I'd put things like my Steam files on there as well as a few other games and movies, something like a portable entertainment drive for my laptop so I don't have to lug around my other two external drives, both need external power and are about 3.5" thick. The thing I wanted to do with this new drive when I'm set up in my dorm room was mount it on the back of my laptops screen, the top of the notebook once the lid is closed to keep it out of the way (my desk is cluttered as it is). But I'm curious if the magnets in the drive will screw up my screen over time…

I've found several guides for this and downloads of specific distributions which all seem to very simply tell me how to put Linux onto my pc using a cd. The computer I'm trying to install on doesn't have the luxury of a cd drive. Does anyone know any good distributions that I can install with just one 3.5" floppy. The computer is old so I don't want anything other than a simple efficient version- no GUI, I don't even want to be able to connect it to my network. My requirements are that it should boot up, have directories, be able to run VI (text editor), be able to run scripts, tansfer data to/from a floppy, be able to compile and run programs in fortran77, and op…

I apologize for not putting this in the help thread, wasn't sure if it should go there or not. Anyhow, I have read that if you have two hardrives, it will greatly increase system performance to disable Pagefile on one and make the Pagefile on the other larger. Is this true? For example: I have one 80G. (Master/boot drive) and a 20G for random stuff. (I have 1G RAM but is shared with onboard Video) Just now I set my Master/Boot drive to no pagefile and increased the 20G harddrives PF to 2G min 4G max. Is this more efficient and/or safe?

I would like some ideas or some recommendations regarding this new anti-virus. It is not so popular, but I have heard some positive reviews about it. My tech support services teacher recommended me to use it, but I backed down because I'm used to Norton anti-virus already. Have anybody here tried it, or know about it? If so, what do you think? Is it worth a try?

I moved my computer to southern california like a week ago, so it spend a few hundred miles bouncing around in the trunk of my car. 2 of my 3 hard drives got their power cables disconnected from the trip. after some effort i got everything hooked back up, but couldnt get it to start with hard drive #2 powered on. as soon as i unplugged the power to HD2 it starts fine. the first time i started it up, i know for a fact i used firefox. i got directions online, checked email, etc, and i havent used internet explorer in at least 6 months. only problem is, firefox was installed on HD2. i thought that was a bit odd... the next time i restarted the computer i went to run …

I throw away my dialup modem and phone line to get connected to the internet using gprs on my mobile phone, since the reviews that i saw online stated that gprs goes up to speeds of 32kps to 48kps i was quite happy with that,,,,, but now the problem that i am faceing is that i am getting a much lower speed than that, when i establish the connection using a bluetooth device the connection states that i am connected at a speed of 115. kbps (i know thats just the port speed) in task manager under the network tab the utilization of the connection allway stays under 20%, which means that i only have 20% of that 115 kbps working for me, which i guess means that i am only gettin…

Ahoy. Well. I've had the unfortunate experience the other day; some idiot kid tried to add himself to my skype contacts. When I (quite politely, I must add.. he's an ass) refused, he stated he is going to hack into my website. I'm a PHP/mySQL programmer, so I know a thing or two about servers. I wasn't all *that* worried about the actual code (server access is not really something he could acquire, at least not in his very low level, as I was convinced he has later on). But I figured I probably *should* do some reading and improve my security. My website is just an example of what I can do in PHP/mySQL for potential customers or just people who want me to prog…
