The disappearance of a specie does affect the survival of their predators, and changes populations of other related and predated. What ecological bad could come if all mosquitoes cease to exist ? Less frogs and salamanders perhaps ? Would that trigger a major disruption in ecology ?

Some Science fiction authors described Human race as “Self Destructive” in their stories. Are we really? If Population increases exponentially, our needs for the usage of resources would also increase. We may postpone the run out of resources with our full effort, but it would come to an end sooner or later. I think we can do nothing about it. Do we have any other options?

Ok, maybe my Google skills just suck, but I can't seem to bring this up. I saw it in a news story last week and it blasted itself back into my skull when I woke up this morning in a strange, Dok Gonzo-like episode. (Ok, don't draw any funny ideas about Pangloss' lifestyle from that.....) Anyway, I was just wondering if someone could tell me more about this. I believe the idea is that scientists (?) have come up with 14 or 15 singular instances of things that can be done to flatten carbon emissions down to zero growth. I think each of them represents a billion tons (tonnes?) per year of carbon emission. If I remember right, only seven have to be completed in order…

Some insects seem to show very intelligent behaviour. Ants make nests, and engage in farming. And termites build high-towering cities. Also bees construct hexagonal cells in their hives, or "colonies". And the bees in these colonies, communicate information to each other. They perform the "figure-8" dances. The dances advise all the other bees, how far away some food is, and in what direction to fly, to get to it. Yet each individual bee, has only got a tiny brain. A brain the size of a pinhead of tissue. But somehow, all these tiny brains, combine to make the whole colony, consisting of 100,000 bees, behave intelligently. Now, bacteria exist in colonies fa…

Hello As a city kid, I have zero knowledge about agriculture. To learn a bit about this, I will spend a few days on a farm at the end of the month to talk with farmers who went from "conventional" agriculture to organic. In the meantime, I'm reading a bunch of books about agriculture, both conventional and organic, but am having a hard time finding sound, non-biased, scientific information about... 1. what problems organic agriculture is supposed to solve (too much, too strong pesticides/fertilizer? lower nutrition in food?) 2. whether these solutions really work, and if they have any drawbacks For instance, some organic farmers refer to BS like homeopathy or biodyn…

Well at a state park the other day i was observing the quarry rocks only to find them covered with the tine bright red spiders known as clover mites. they repopulate rapidly and live inside the rocks. There are so many and well noticing them i also noticed that the rocks all over were orange, and close up it seemed to me that this color had come from the many dead bodies of the clover mites. Its a known fact that when squished they leave a red residue that difficult to get rid of. is it passable that the many dead bodies of these bugs is actually coloring the rock formation?

The Alternative Travel Project is about making small changes at home that ripple and affect changes around the world. The project, created by actors Stana Katicand Seamus Dever (from hit TV show Castle),promotes people to leave their car at home to help the environment. The Car Free March contest encouraged people to leave their car at home for 7 days throughout the month and to record the experience. We decided to take it a little bit further, and came up with an extra challenge of our own. Prove that no matter where you live, you can get to a place using any of the alternative transportation available. Our video was chosen as the winner! This was our experience, hope yo…

Yesterday I got into a little debate with my uncle regarding the behaviour of ambush predators, specifically whether an ambush predator such as a cougar, leopard, jaguar, etc. will still attack a human that they have been stalking if the human spots them. Now, don't misunderstand the point of my question; I am fully aware that the predator will SOMETIMES continue the attack, but I'm just talking about probabilities here. If for example, a cougar or leopard has been stalking a human in the forest, and the human catches sight of it and makes it clear that they will hold their ground and put up a fight, maybe wielding a stick or something, is it LIKELY that the cougar w…

Environmental compliance became a serious issue when the electronic wastes began to cause harmful effects on the health and environment. rohs (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive is one of the laws that were adopted by the European Union, with an aim to control such hazards. Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, together with the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive, forms the European Law. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive focuses on the restriction of certain harmful substances for the manufacturing of the electrical and electronic equipment. The products manufactured in the member states of the European Unio…

Much attention has been drawn to the pollution and other environmental hazards that are on the rise these days. Prevention and control of these have become the need of the hour. Many laws and rules have been adopted and implemented in a view to control this. A few of them are the REACH, RoHS, WEEE directives, etc. [/url]environmental compliance refers to abiding by these environmental laws and rules. These laws govern the use of toxic substances and the wastes that are generated from the electrical and electronic wastes. The use of some substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc is banned completely by certain laws such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (R…

My intention was to get some suggestions about resources to use, but discussion is good too. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there about primate diets. I've read some of Primate Behavioral Ecology by Strier, so I might contribute. Folivorous primates have to counteract the toxins in leaves, which they might do by eating other things. No, the colobus monkey eating burnt wood doesn't have Pica. The book says insects and leaves are high in amino acids. I eat seaweed, and I read that seaweeds have all essential amino acids. Maybe it was a misunderstanding of this webpage since I was only skimming the "Abstract" portion. http://www.sciencedi...3088146060076…

I was designing a fantasy treehouse last night, but today when I showed it to my mom she said it would kill the tree. I didn't intend for it to look like the tree is dead. My basic idea was for the tree to be hollowed out in the trunk, a multipurpose room in the trunk, ladders to the higher part of the tree, and beneath the leaves a bedroom. What could someone do to make a treehouse INSIDE the tree, without stopping the tree from ever growing again?

The question was posed to me on a survival board regarding whether the Earth's crust would provide sufficient shielding from a solar flare massive enough to generate a Flux Compression Event (FCE). I answered blatantly "No." I asked the simple question that if our own magnetic field about 1/50th that of Jupiter and about 1/500th that of the sun and we can read that non-compressed field at the surface, what makes anyone think the crust will shield them (in a bunker) from a compressed burst 500 times as strong. The quantities are off the top of my head, so I won't feel offended if someone presents the actual figures. The point will still be the same. A compression even…

Dear All , A very Happy Darwin Day to all.On this day I would like all of you to introduce with the fascinating world of Darwinian or Evolutionary Medicine. Evolutionary Medicine is all about understanding the evolutionary origin of diseases , understanding the selection forces that have shaped those traits. The field is emerging like anything and due to the constant efforts of the founders evolution will soon be part of Medical Curriculum in USA.I would like to share my brief write up on Evolutionary Medicine with you all : INTRODUCTION: Darwinian Medicine which is the synthesis of two different disciplines of Evolutionary Biology and Medicine is emer…

I always wonder how we can form a picture of an ecosystem from fossil records? All a fossil can tell us is that the animal lived in a certain age... but it cannot tell us what else lived (unless we see bite marks or find prey in its gut or something). I'd like to have a little discussion, and I'm curious what you have to say. Here's a few of my issues (which may not necessarily be true): 1. Larger animals fossilize easier (or, rot away slower). Digging into quite recent layers of soil, how often do we find the smaller animals, despite the fact that we know smaller animals are more common in almost every ecosystem on earth at the moment? Has there ever been a study…

I recently watched a clip where an Orca induced tonic immobility into a Great White Shark, rendering it defenceless and it forged the idea that Orcas are the supreme marine predators...however I believe this was a rare incident and not solid evidence for the unknown nature of the relationship between the two aquatic heavyweights...let's say a fully-grown adult Great White Shark and a fully-matured Orca interacted and there was no tonic immobilities being used or the Orca was separated from its Pod (pod of Orca would win obviously) who'd win? I know it's difficult to exactly find a shark that resembles the average size and weight of a Great White because they vary from…
