  1. Recently I've done an experiment and we are required to determine the percentage NH3 in the complex by mass. I had no problem doing the experiment but stuck in the calculation part Really hope someone can help me here!!! >.< The experiment was done by titration, the complex we used is... (CuSO4*5H2O + H2O + NH3 + ethanol + acetone) - sorry I don't know how I should call this @.@ But those are the things we used to make that complex... First I dissolved 0.2g of the complex with 25mL H2O, & 31.05mL of standardized 0.1M HCl was used to titrate it. Then we are required to find "%NH3"...... Can someone please kindly tell me (at least the for…

  2. Hello What compound would glow when exposed to infrared light? It is used applied as paint on a piece of cardboard to test the illumination from remote controls and infrared beams. Read it is some phosphor compound, but unsure if it is plain white phosphor with something else or not. It is shown here: http://img.alibaba.com/photo/10846815/Infrared__IR__Laser_Test_Card__Anti_stoke_.jpg Thanks, Miguel

Is there anyone else other than me that cannot access their site (forums and even the main site)? When I attempt to go to the forums, I get a "404 Not Found error", and when I go to the main site, I get a "There is no website configured at this address" error. I hope someone knows what the issue is, perhaps they are just having server problems?

I've continued my hydrogen production experimentation, and am now re-trying some of the techniques I've been told... 1. Mix NaOH and Al foil in water to produce hydrogen gas. Unfortunately, though I get rapid bubbling (some times even minor explosion when contained), I can't ignite the produced bubbles. I'm using a gas-stove lighter and I can't even hear the slightest 'pop'. What could be going wrong? 2. I was told that HCl + Al in water will produce hydrogen gas. Is this true? It doesn't make sense to me. Should it, or do I have to add CuSO4 or CuCl to the mixture? Also, I've been wondering how I can remove the oxide coating that forms on Al. If I could, p…

I was told by my chem teacher that oil and water are immiscible because water was polar and oil was non-polar, so that water molecules were attracted to each other, and forced the oil molecules up between the gaps. This is the "like dissolves like" rule of thumb. However, in Skylab, it was discovered that ordinarily immiscible substances became miscible in microgravity. How does this fact relate to the one above?

  11. I know 'partial molar volume' is the increament of volume per mol of A by addition of small amount of A into large amount of B. Am i correct? But now the question is, what is 'partial molal volume'? I failed to find the definition of 'partial molal volume' via google. Hope you guys can help. Thanks~

hey guys, this thread falls into the catogory of both chemistry biology but more so to chemistry so I put it here. I've always been interested in chemistry off and on. I've always wanted to mix things together in a beaker, cause it bubble, glow, smell, turn into something new, and everything else. the only thing I really did was do the famous vinegar and baking soda fizz reaction that blows out carbon dioxide...really only useful for bad smell and blowing out matches... soo...I was wondering if you guys could tell me a list of chemical combinations that react in different ways like this that I could do just for fun, that aren't too dangerous, but that use …

But can you do something or put a chemical into the washing machine when washing clothes which somehow prevents creasing of any sort ! This would be amazing if i could find a solution to this problem ! I like solving problems Cheers

I am taking an education class in teaching lab science, and I am supposed to give a chemistry demonstration as a requirement for the course. I want to give a demo on something regarding mixtures and pure substances, separation of mixtures, or energy and energy changes. However, I am limited as to what chemicals I can use (I have no acess to lab chemicals) so the simpler the better. Can anyone give me some suggestions???

I have problem to determine the molarity of H2SO4 from 95%-98% H2SO4 solution with volume of 2.5 L stated on the bottle. Besides, i am not sure what is the meaning of 95%-98%. Is this percentage is in term of volume, number of moles or weight of H2SO4? If the molarity above is obtained, suppose i mix 1 volume this H2SO4 with 2 volume of water, what is the new molarity and number of moles of the diluted solution? These problems are killing me. Please help~! *Are these informations useful?* density of H2SO4 = 1.841 g/cm3 Molecular mass of H2SO4 = 98.08 g/mol

YAAAY 20,001 post. Anyway, I typed this up the other day but I wanted to make sure that everything was accurate, is it? As Extraction From Realgar David Aldridge Arsenic can be won from realgar by reacting the powdered mineral with Fe filings. The result will be solid As, and solid FeS. This needs to be done under a hood, as some of the As is vaporised into Arsine. Fe: 1 Mole is equal to 55.847 g As: 1 Mole is equal to 74.92159g S : 1 Mole is equal to 32.066 g If we break up everything into 1/10th of a mole for each of the elements (The As and the S are still attatched, we are just figuring out how much of each element is present), we would find th…

I would like to ask would the same electrode dipped into different electrolytes affect its electrode potential, say, would the electrode potential of Zn/Zn2+ differ when Zn electrode if dipped into sodium chloride solution instead of 1M Zn2+ solution? And I would like to know how cathodic protection work. I was just told that during the process, metal article to be protected is connected to the negative terminal of an electrochemical cell making it as the cathode, as electrons flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal (the metal article be protected), it prevents the article being corroded when exposed to moist air. Afterward, oxygen receives the electr…

Hello. As a kid in the sixties I read on a chemistry and physics experimenter's book written for young readers, a simple process to home make something like what is now named rhodamine, capable of dying a whole pool water deep red with a few drops. Cannot find it now... Does anyone know how to make such a highly concentrated water soluble dye/ink/colorant with simple compounds ? Sort of remembering borax as one ingredient, but not sure after 35 years. Oh, those days with no television, no internet... and plenty of good books to discover ! Thanks, Miguel (YT had a good suggestion using oriental food dyes, but still trying to find the elusive formula; maybe …

So, I want to become a high school chemistry teacher. In order to get my licensure for the state of PA, I have to take the Praxis II Chemistry Content test. Has anyone taken it?? I just want to know how difficult it is. I have taken the practice test they offer on the ETS web site, but I feel that it was pointless due to the example test including a disclaimer which stated, “This test is not an indicator of difficulty or scope of the actual test.” Therefore, I really have no idea what to expect. Can anyone help me with this????
