I learned that electron stability depends on the Zeff value because it takes into account shielding. However, the Zeff of, say a 2s He electron is less than the Zeff of a 2p Carbon electron. BUT the He electron is obviously a lot more stable, as it is a noble gas and doesn't bond easily. I know that the He electron is closer to the nucleus where the positive charge is, but the total charge on it is STILL lower than the charge felt by a 2p carbon electron. It seems like it shouldn't matter how close it is, because in the end it is effected by a lower charge. Would I be right in saying then that the fact that the He has a full 2s shell which is the lowest energy sta…

Is it possible that the experiment has shown that the compound actually formed is Li4SiO4(500 degree temperature) whereas the calculation using VASP show that Li2SiO3 has the lowest energy of formation. Could we conclude that at 500 degree temperature the kinetically favoured compound is Li2SiO3 and not Li4SiO4

Hi, I'm a little new to the field of chemistry, so if this question seems a little too basic, then sorry for that. The questions is: a compound has the formula X (subscript 2) O (subscript 5) where X is the unknown element. The compund is 44% oxygen by mass. What is the identity of elemnt X? What I thought of doing was that, by converting it into grams, 44% O is 80g, but wasn't sure how to work from there (If I'm even suposed to do that.) Could you also please explain the (proper) procedure? Thanks

I know how to get the answer for this question using hesselback equation but I don't understand the question. I have some questions about the questiuon. 1. The PKa value of the sulphydryl (-SH) group of cysteine is 8.33. Calculate the fraction of anion to free sulfhydryl group at PH 7.O. So is this Pka value referring to SH + H20 <---> H+ + S- reaction Why is this reaction significant. How does getting the PH of the equlibrium constant of this reaction provide any meaningful value. Also in this amino acid there is only one SH group(meaning two atoms) so how can an equilibrium reaction occur. My question is related to PKa values. I don't…

Why does nitrogen have a positive charge when all four hydrogens and nitrogen have full outer shells. There is no hydrogen without an electron here. Thanks!!

Hello, This is probably very basic to most here, but I was wondering if someone could explain to me why/how running a furnace or heater causes humidity to drop in a room. Running an air conditioner with the cold evaporator coil on the inside of a room causes water to condense on the coil and run out the back to the outside, lowering the humidity in a room. I would have guessed that a furnace would have the opposite effect on humidity. But instead, it too seems to lower humidity.

1.Determine the net charge of the following peptide at PH 7.0 PKa values C00H NH3+ Side chain Valine 2.29 9.72 Aspartate 1.99 10.0 3.96 2. The PKa value of the sulphydryl (-SH) group of cysteine is 8.33. Calculate the fraction of anion to free sulfhydryl group at PH 7.O. I'm not a homework posting type person. But today I'm really running out of time and really need help. Hope you understand and help. Thank you so much

i am doing electrolysis on a highly saturated solution of sodium chloride in a glass in the first 10 minutes the solution was yellow and only a salty smell.10 mins after that about an inch of thick stuff on top it was dark orange and the rest was not thick and was also dark orange and the very bottom of the glass was about an inch of clear almost colorless but a tiny bit of pinkish color . i stoped here just in case can some please tell what all this is and what would of happend if i let it go on longer like much longer. anyone that sees this and knows please tell me. thanks Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedupdate i collected the pink stuff and then i…

i would like some cool electrolysis experiments i already did salt water what else can i do with electrolysis? And can someone tell me what i made i had salt water and the anode and cathode was copper and the salt water turnd light blue so i dried it on a dish and had white and blue crystals what is the blue stuff? i did the same thing with steel nails and the water turned green after a wile it turned orange i dried that out and it had small orange crystals so what is the orange stuff ?

Just some info first. Phenol and Water is not soluble. At some temperature they are. At others phenol comes a solid, while at others phenol and water are just two phase liquid like oil and water. I'm doing an experiment to plot the solubility curve of Phenol-Water. I was asked to find the eutectic temperature, critical composition, and consolute temperature. Well eutectic point for 2 solids is the lowest temperature they melt, so is it just the lowest temperature phenol-water is soluble? Critical composition I have no clue, any ideas? Consolute temperature, consolute means i don't understand it from dictionary.com "–adjective Chemistry. 1. (of two l…
