Dear all, In order to prepare LaFeO3 (sol-gel method) I used ferric nitrate as the starting product without noticing it to be a hygroscopic material. If I use ferric nitrate should I heat it at some temperature before weighing it? Also if I use Fe3O4 which acid can be used for dissolving it? Is there any alternate material for Fe which can be used for sol-gel synthesis? Am a Physics graduate and I am unaware of the chemistry involved. Pradheesh

I realize that this is supposed to be a really easy concept, but I have a hard time understanding it. Could someone please try to explain to me what a state function is, without saying "a quantity that depends only on the current equilibrium state of the system" or something essentially similar? Particularly I would much appreciate it if someone could show me some examples of how things like heat and work do depend on the way the system acquired the state? Thanks a bunch

  3. im not sure if this is right but..... i have been given an element which is Neon. i am told that Ne consists of three isotopes: Ne-20 Ne-21 and Ne-22 (which i asume to be the number pf protons) in the proportions of 90.9% 0.3% and 8.8% i need to find the average relative atomic mass of Ne... do i just find the mass of each proportion of isotope and then add them all up and divide by 3 to get an average?

I have a quick question that I hope some of you all may be able to help with – every year I do the gummy bear molten potassium chlorate demo to illustrate Cellular Respiration. However after speaking with another science teacher in the area he told me I probably shouldn’t do this demo due to the high risk of impurities in the potassium chlorate – which could lead to disastrous results. Do any of you have any experience with this, or maybe elaborate more on the risks? Thanks

How do you determine which chemicals are dominant in chemical reactions? For example: HCl + Na = NaCl + H2 But why does it not go this way: HCl + Na = H2Cl + Na Is there a list that I can learn that tell me which chemical take priority? Another example would be: Na + Cl + HCO3 what would it make and how do we know? NaCl + HCO3 or NaHCO3 + Cl? One of them must have priority over the other.

I know that there is someone who can help me. Like a process of avoiding the air pollution which can help all the countries. But how can I do it in a way of presentation, likewise an exhibit? Or could someone help me in making ideas, because this is my first time to do it. Post ideas with relevance to the theme and will contribute good effects for the whole world. Thank You for advance.

On an average day there is roughly 21% oxygen in the air we breathe. A person on average takes in about 250 L or air per hour via breathing. Does the human body respond or act differently to higher concentrations of O2 oxygen? Do people with hundreds of plants in their home, or an oxygen generating system become healthier, more energetic, etc. etc. Have there been studies on low concentrations of oxygen vs high concentrations of oxygen for humans? - What is the minimum about of oxygen a human needs? Is there a maximum?

The cation of an acid and the anion of a base combine to make salt. H+ + OH- ==> H2O. Does this mean water is classed as a salt? I have been trying to find a good definition of salt (clear), does anyone have one? Also can someone clarify what Hydronium is for me? Is it another name for H+ or H3O+? Wiki is confusing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydronium

I was wondering what metals won't react with an acid to form hydrogen gas and came across a web site mentioning "activity series". I looked this up and found several sites, but they all list the metals in a different order. Does anyone know where I will find an accurate list of activity series? I don't know which site to trust (wikipedia has another different list as well). I would really love a complete list (in order) of all the metals that don't react with acid to form Hydrogen gas. Also, now i'm interested, I would love an accurate activity series list if anyone know's if there is a universally recognised one... How can there be so many variations?…

Hi, for my high school project we have to present a demo showing the combined gas law. I've looked all over the internet and have tried to come up with some ideas, but I cannot think of anything. We need something that will show the basic theory, without having to provide any measurements or anything. Thank you for your time ;D

  18. So far whenever I look for some online I don't know if they are the right kind. I've gotten a lot of results for construction goggles and such. I figure I am going to be in lab a LOT throughout college so I should get a really good comfortable pair that doesn't leave red lines on my face. Right now I am still using my $5 pair. So, anyone know a good website or have a suggestion for me?

  19. Warning: This thread will contain the dreaded "mystery compound that fits what I need" scenarios and will have MS paint diagrams. Most of this stuff is just thoughts in their development stage so have fun and don't bust out your torches and pitchforks if something is wrong. <this part is pointless but kinda fun> Preface: I was watching Avatar and as many of you may have noticed there was a mind blowing number of situations that made me squirm with nerdy disgust. Many of these logical holes aside (due mainly to the fact many of them would have ended the movie many many minutes/hours early, such as "hey lets fire a cruise missle into their holy tree rather than f…

I'm sorry for this second question, but I am very lost in this chapter. I have no idea what to do on this problem. Please advise me. gas pressures N2 245 torr (1 L) Ne 745 torr (1 L) H2 489 torr (.5 L) Each of the bulbs contains a gas at the pressure shown. What is the pressure of the system when all the stopcocks are opened, assuming that the temperature remains constant? (We can neglect the volume of the capillary tubing connecting the bulbs.) Thanks guys.

Hi The EquPixy 2.1 add-in for Microsoft Word will help you to work with chemical formulas and equations. The figures that designate the number of atoms in chemical formulas are automatically converted into subscripts, and the ion charge numbers and atom oxidation degrees are converted into superscripts. The function of writing a capital or lowercase letter depending on the length of pushing down the keyboard key is available for writing chemical elements; if you push down and immediately release the key, a capital letter is written, if you push down the key and hold it for a second a lowercase letter is written. The EquPixy add-in has the ability of checking the valid…

Hello everyone, 1. As you increase alkalinity of the solution open chain form of monosaccharides increase. I like to know the chemical reason behind this. 2. Aldehydes oxidize things more than Ketones. I know that this is due to the hyrdogen atom but how does that make aldehydes more reactive. Isn't oxygen in ketone a strong oxidizing agent? 3. What happens to monosaccharides in the presence of acid? Thanks for the help
