I joined the ACS the other day and I'm actually pretty excited. Being only a freshmen in college I feel like it has solidified my place in chemistry.

Of the three steps in CCS - capture, transportation and storage - capture is by far the most costly (almost 70% of the total cost of CCS). So what could really bring the costs down? Will they be new types of enzymes (see an interesting"]http://powerplantccs...tml]interesting post on enzymes) for making the CO2 capture process more efficient? Or will it be through better materials for capture? (see here for an interesting"]http://www.azom.com/...474]interesting update on this ). Or could it be a better method of amine-based CO2 capture? Or could it be something radically different like using"]http://www.powerplan.../alg.html]using algae to capture CO2…

Hi, I am obsessed with nanodots and want to make some. I am wondering if anyone know what kind of certification i would need to buy cadmium oxide and selenium to make them. I have degree in physics but I do not work as a chemist or in the science field right now. Any help would be great! thanks

Hi, So for our next lab this week in chemistry, we were asked to look around and find out about gas-forming reactions. Our teacher said that we can do pretty much any reactions (even those that smell bad or "explode", as long as it is done in very small quantities in a controlled envriomment), so I was wondering if anyone knows any gas forming reactions like that? It's ok if they don't smell, or explode or anything, any gas-forming reaction is welcome. I just want to get as many as I can before the lab. Thanks in advance for any help whatsoever.

ok so i have a nice arsenic metal chunk for my element collection but it is coated in a dull gray material which i assume is some oxide of arsenic well i would really like to remove the dull gray layer in order to show the shiny arsenic metal underneath (which is MUCH prettier) any one know what oxide forms on arsenic at room temp (assuming it is an oxide of some sort) or if it isnt an oxide, what is the dull gray coating and how do i remove it. any ideas are welcome, and i have both nitric and hydrochloric acid. I was going to try one of those but i figured i should check here first to find out the best method for removal and to find out what the coating act…

So this is my first semester doing undergraduate research, and I'm very exited about it. We have been doing a certain experiment for a couple months now and the first big hurdle we are facing is getting a pure product. Basically, we are trying to make a substance and then analyze it by XRD. The problem is that we are getting a lot of impurities in the final product. I don't want to go into too much detail, but basically there are two steps: adding NaOH to a substance, and then oxidizing it. So far we have tried doing the reaction under nitrogen, and instead of adding the oxidizing agent as a powder we dissolved it and added it at a constant rate. Still there a…

So, I've come across a certain terminology aspect in literature. It's like this: ICa. I looked at this and thought, "Calcium iodide, what? No, the bonds don't work that way." Anyway, I went online and about the only thing that made sense was that the I stands for "iodized." Does this seem right to any of you? This is the first time I've come across a term like this.

I've tried to learn the rules for drawing the lewis structures (otherwise knows as dot-cross structures) of molecules but there are a few problems.. First of all in some instances the octet simply cannot be completed and in others there are more than 8 electrons in the outer shell. If I encounter an unfamiliar molecule how should I set about drawing the lewis structure? Secondly, I ran into a few problems with the SO4^ 2- molecule.. Why is it that the "correct" structure is a central S atom with single bonds to two O atoms and double bonds to the other two O atoms like this? O | O=S=O | O and why isn't it this.. O || O=S=O …

There's an experiment called the "barking dog" in which nitrous oxide and carbon disulfide ignite in a large, long glass tube, resulting in a slow explosion although the glass tube does not break. I first saw this experiment in the old British movie “The Browning Version” (1951), where a chemistry teacher performed it in front of unprotected students. I've also seen it in modern videos on YouTube, again involving spectators without eye/etc protection. Is the apparent dangerous of shattering the glass tube real? Why, or why not? How has this been proven conclusively?

=Lets say you titrate a weak acid, HA, with a strong base, NaOH. Now, before the equivalence point, the pH is calculated like a buffer because HA + OH- -> A- + H2O. So you have a mixture of a an acid and its conjugate base. My question is, why doesn't this act like a neutralization reaction like a strong acid and strong base? In order to get OH- you have to dissociate NaOH, so you also have Na+ in solution. Why doesn't the Na+ react with the A- to form a salt like a strong acid and strong base would? I'm also confused about buffers in general. You have an acid and its conjugate base... why don't they react? How can they coexist in solution? Help, I s…

okay, yesterday we did an experiment involving oxidation and reduction. It was one of those experiments where you make a circuit and with time notice a build up of metal in one of the two electrodes. Anyway, we used copper for the electrodes. here are the results: Current: 1.0 A Time: 900 secs Charge: 900 coloumbs Initial mass of cathode: 2.58 g Final mass of cathode: 2.85 g Mass gain: 0.27 g 1) Calculate the quantity of charge, measured in coulombs, required to deposit 63.5 g (1.0 mol) of copper metal. pretty standard question, anyway any help would be appreciated. both electrodes (anode and cathode) were made of copper. this was dunked into copper sulf…

In order to remove paint from our skin, why do we use turpentine? Why doesn't water remove the paint? I guess it has got something to do with miscibility/immiscibility of liquids but I don't know the exact reason. Thanks, Ron

Hello everyone, This is a DIT molecule. http://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/displayImage.do?defaultImage=true&imageIndex=0&chebiId=15768 Now the book says there is a coupling reaction DIT + DIT ----> gives T4 molecule or tyroxine hormone Now this is how T4 looks like http://www.speciation.net/Public/Data/sp/Image/thyroxine.gif I don't understand how you can get this when there is a addition reaction between these two. Does coupling mean something else. Thank you I don't know why but it says pictures are not allowed in this board.

I have a small question: I know the standard electrode potentials of reduction for Ti3+ and Ti2+ to Ti-metal, which is surprisingly low (lower than Zinc even!). But i can't find the same values for the same process with tungsten (W). Which metal is most "noble" of W and Ti? The reason i wonder this is because i was discussing with a friend who has a ring alloyed with both metals, and he claims that titanium is more noble. Ti resists corrosion because of a passive layer of Titanium oxide, similar to aluminium, but in terms of reduction potential, titanium is very "un-noble". If it wasn't for that oxide layer, titanium would corrode very quickly in normal co…
