I'm not sure the difference between archaebacteria and eubacteria? Also, what is the difference between those two and protista? This is kind of stupid question but I have trouble on separating them from six kingdoms, which my bio book provides. EDIT: The book provides six kingdoms as: eubacteria, archaebacteria, protista, fungi, plantae, and animalia.

I heard somewhere that when two brothers are born, the younger one's peak height is nearly always greater than the older one's. Why does the younger sibling have this advantage? What is the biological or genetic explanation?

From the view of physics and chemistry, a life is no more than a kind of system with some interesting physical and chemical properties. In the lecture of the winner of Nobel prize of physics in 2004,David Gross,he presented 25 problems in future phyiscs. One of those questions asks, if there is some theorctical biology, if it have underlying conceptal structures, like physics, and if new mathematics is needed for the description of such theory. This is an very interesting question, isn't it? I'd like to regard a biological object as a physical system. But how can we understand the behavior of such a system? How can it evolve? How can we give a compact expression for the r…

  9. Sometimes, it would say that stomata rarely open or even close at night. If plants close the stomata at night, how can the plants get oxygen? Are all the stomata fully closed? If not, the problem is simple because oxygen can still diffuse into the plants in a low rate.

OK, this is sort of out of place, but it might get the best response here. I am continually adding to my website, and among the things I add is a section for Biological Science. What is the best way to divide up this section? I want it modeled sort of like this: http://www.neonostalgia.com/soc.html Note, not all the links work. Enter into Theology, not Literature, for I haven't even touched literature yet. I hope to get that up sometime this week. But as you see, it goes from Sociological Sciences (Biological Sciences) to Theology (?) to Christianity (?) to Early Christianity (?) which contains individual resources. Also, I could do, if need be, for the sake of keepin…

hi, im currently studying Biology in uni (final year) and we are doing a module called "forensic Biology, Archeaology and Geology". Anyway..... we have been asked to answer this question as an essay title ESSAY TITLE: A Nigerian man, newly arrived in the UK, was stabbed to death in a wood on the outskirts of Reading during August 2003. His body was moved immediately after death and was eventually recovered from a shallow grave on a moor close to Aberdeen in January 2004. Explain in detail the how the body would have been recovered from the soil and the nature of biological, geological etc analysis that would have enabled the above scenario to be established. N…

  13. I just learned about five kinds (maybe there are more but I only learned 5) and I want to be assured that what I know is correct. The first one is random gentetic drift which frequency of an allele of gene varies from time to time by random. No one allele dominates over another completely. The second one is natural selection ---survival of fittest--- which is the animal or allele that best adapts the environment survives. The third one is artificial selection such that humans picking the horses to breed for the race. This is not the one who best survives on the environment determined by nature but rather humans, who wants to have "best" allele and manipulates …

Which activity would you choose in order to burn aways your fat in your body?100m or jogging? Experts said that jogging is better as it helps us take in more oxygen than usual to break down carbohydrates and then a little fat. Why doesn't 100 have the same effect? Moreover, it can help you release extra energy in a short time to support your vigorous activity. In other words, it helps you break down more carbohydrates. Am I righT?

In Animal Physiology class today, we were discussing thyroxine, iodine, and how lack of iodine causes goiter, and how goiter used to be common in some areas until we supplemented salt. But that got me thinking: Why don't we hear of animals getting goiter, or suffering from iodine deficiency? I mean, we're eating more or less the same things (plants and other animals), so if the local human food doesn't contain enough iodine (due to soil deficiency or whatever) why wouldn't we see the same in native wildlife? Is it some aspect of biology that's peculiar to our brand of neotenic apes? Or is it something to do with diet, like the parts of the animal we eat, or h…

I saw a commercial about a Wild Planet episode or whatever some time soon about a lion taking care of an antelope. Now I just read an article about a tortoise taking care of a hippo. Interesting. Any comments or ideas on that? I'm really interested on why the lion takes care of the antelope, since I thought lions ate antelopes.

Hi, I need someone who has a good knowledge in bacteria engineering or whatever it's called to tell me if what I've thought of is possible or not. All I know about bacteria is that it can reproduce rapidly and that it can be modified to reproduce other things... That idea brought me on thinking that it could be possible to create a "pen that never runs out". This pen would work so that its ink is constantly reproduced in form of bacteria(or by bacteria, whatever). There should also be a small device inside the pen which would keep the number of bacteria constant, that is, prevent overflow, and another device which would be used as a food source for bacteria (if i…

I have a trouble getting the answer to this question. There are two parts to it. I answered the first one but I can't get the second part. If the 3rd DNA base in your gene for insulin was mistakenly duplicated -- meaning another copy of that letter were placed between the current 3rd and 4th base --what type of mutation would that be? Ok. That was the first part. I put "frameshift mutation" because it changes the codon of the DNA. How it is going to be readed changes because of the copy placed. Using the first question, here is a question that I DID NOT get: If the event above actually occurred, what would be the first three amino acids in the prote…
