I got some questions about common bacteria found around the house and fluid transfer. 1. What temperatures would bacteria die through heat? And what temperature would it die through cold? If it even dies from freezing, or would it revive after it defrosts? 2. I read that bacteria can't survive in things like honey, because the glucose content is so high. But can bacteria survive in or on salt? Lets say I licked a spoon, and just left it there in the table overnight. Assuming the bacteria is live and multiplying, then in the morning, shoved the spoon into a container filled with salt. Come back to check it later, would the bacteria live or die?

For anyone who has read any of my posts on the subject I'm quite the a-life/computational biomodeling fanatic (namely in regards to the creation of a computer simulation of a human being). So I was really enthused to see this story about a company working on creating commercial a-life software for the general public: http://www.economist.com/science/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=6740040&CFID=78583140&CFTOKEN=39f9741-109e11f6-1292-4b21-93bb-7a3672e4ced1 Really, I guess isn't anything new... there were several a-life titles from Maxis, including El Fish, Unnatural Selection, and their upcoming game: Spore. But this looks to be far more complete a simulation…

I just learned this ideas a couple days ago: There are about 5 mass extinctions in Earth's history according to fossil record. According to the pattern, it seems like we are due for one. My Bio teacher told me that the extinctions already began, but not directly apply to human becaues human are the one who caused it. We are destorying rain forests, every week, there are 40+ spieces becoming extinct. We don't have a chance to study those spieces before they become extinct, therefore, we might destory the cure to cancer and other 'uncurable' dieseases. We going to end up making ourself extinct. Do you agree?

I'm sure most of you know that there are certain types of brain waves; Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. Each one in higher Hz rates that the previous, gamma being the highest recorded. These brain waves are often associated with daily functions, being the lower frequency waves are associated with deep sleep while gamma is with almost god-like concentration and higher brain functions. Some actually belive that there is a way to tap into these brain waves with outside influence, i.e. meditation, music, beats, drums, etc... Now, do you believe that certain music could essentially tap into the higher frequency brain patterns? or that they have no effect or is…

Ok, I'm not very knowedgeable in the field of Biology (I've taken high school biology, and planning on taking a college level course next year), but I find it very interesting. I made some agar from gelatin and a few other ingredients and have been growing bacteria colonies. I started this one on December 22, and this picture shows its growth by December 29. Does anyone have any ideas to possible bacteria species? The colony is roughly 4.4 cm tall, and about 2.5 cm wide (i'm talking about the colony on the side, not in the middle).

  8. I got kicked out of a classroom for thinking black people are black because of the warm climate and that they are still evolving out of it. I made a polar bear and brown bear reference and it really pissed the teacher off. I'm wondering, am I wrong and there just happen to be black and white and everything inbetween people, or is it really because of the climate? Please don't mistake this as racist, for any of you extremely easily offended. I've never read anything about it but I think I did hear on discovery once "dark skin to help fight the heat" or something to that affect. If we all started living in spaceships in outerspace and the blacks kept mating with the bla…

I need some help brain storming on research projects I could conduct on a ten day trip to Belize. I can study just about anything that is accessable. We would be traveling in december to the Rio Bravo Conservation District. the research center of Hillbank. The people of San Carlos are readily avaible too. Somehow I have to tie in humanity in order to receive my grant to travel. I am a Pre Medical and Psychology, undergraduate student. *if that helps at all* Any ideas would be really great!!! Thank you!

In my science class we are testing the affect of different concentrations of fertilizer for germinating radish seeds. The radish seeds with fertilizer added to distilled water didnt grow, they were attacked by a fungi but that dosn't matter... The control did germinate however (no fertilizer) and there are these purple stains on the paper towel which holds the seeds to the side of the beaker. Everyone elses control also had these purple stains, how did these stains get there? Also, Perlite was used to soak the distilled water. Sorry I can't provide pictures. edit: I need to write this report by thursday, I will check on the experiment again tomorrow. Any discu…

  11. Collaborative Digital Brain Mapping Comes of Age Online geomapping services, exemplified by Google Maps, provide high-resolution satellite maps to anyone with an internet connection and have set the standard for online digital mapping. We are now beginning to witness similar digital mapping technologies spilling over into non-related fields, one of the more interesting of which is neuroscience and the collaborative digital mapping of the brain. Launched less than a year ago, BrainMaps broke new ground through its application of digital geomapping technologies to brain mapping. Today, it remains the sole site devoted to online collaborative digital brain mappin…

This is just a hypothesis I came up during health class but my teacher is unable to verify it. Let's say you eat at McDonalds and go to get couple beers. I said it depends on the amount but my classmates said: Food in the stomach allows a person to drink heavily without becoming intoxicated. I have to disagree on this statement. I remember from movies (since I'm not legally allowed to drink so I can't test this myself ) that even you were eating some other food with alcohol, you will still get wasted, or intoxicated. I'm pretty sure this is right but I"m just curious.

I need help! Does anyone know about the experiment where you use agar blocks and sulfuric acid to demonstrate diffusion? What is the evidence of outward diffusion? and with kite diagrams, what do you do if you have no values for a few of the sections, do you just forget it and keep drawing your line from the last point to the next point that you have a value for?

For all of you unfortunate wildlife lovers without access to the BBC (UK TV), you might like to know that they are currently showing an absolutely breathtaking wildlife series called "Planet Earth". I've just discovered that they have put all the best clips on their website on a Planet Earth Explorer page. Have a look and especially check out the great white shark attack off the coast of South Africa - stunning.

When I first learn about genetic engineering and DNA last month, my teacher told us that someone did an experiment on mouse and squid. They took the DNA code that make the squid glow in the dark and insert it to a mouse. The mouse's offspring all have the ability to glow in the dark. I just think it's kind of funny. And they should probably do that to hamster and sell them in the pet store. Wouldn' t it be cool to have a hamster the glow in dark? they did that on plants too! man, I want a plant like that so badly!

Recently it seems there's been a lot of interest in the upper limit for the existence of extremophilic organisms, but I haven't been able to find very much on the lower limits of temperatures at which life would be feasible. So, what organism at the moment is the record holder for (reasonably comfortable) survival at the extremely low temperatures? I've read -15°, but I'm not sure how up to date this is, as the site also listed 113° as the upper limit for hyperthermophiles, which I know has been recently surpassed. Also, is there any theoretical lower temperature limit for life? Apparently at temperatures above 150° biological proteins should start to break down, …

Many people don't believe in Evolution, are they afraid what we might find of our past? What if we are really evolved from sea living organisms like fish? Does that make us any less of what we are now? I personally believe that it doesn't really matter what we are in the past. Who knows? We might be evolved from small living mammals lived a long time ago like mouses. We might be related to pigs. That doesn't make us stupid. In fact, nothing can change what we have achieved. We are human, an intelligent speice that is above all other organism on this planet. We have proven ourself to be. What other organism can build the Great Wall of China? Invent computer? None.
