Hello everyone, (These questions seem long but the answers are very short. So please read) I'm going to start biology next year. I was just reading the first chapter of my biology book. I'm finding radioactive isotopes bit hard. These are 3 quick questions in the textbook. These might be very easy, but I'm very new to biology. Your help would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you 1. The Chernobyl disaster involved radioisotope that takes a long time to decay. This is why it created problems for generations to come. If you were choosing a radioisotope to use in medical diagnosis would you choose one with a slow or fast decay? My guess is fast. Less proble…

Our teacher assigned us to different topics, in which we need to make a sort of book. It should have objectives, introduction, body of the report, generalization. I was assigned to ribosomes. I just need some help because I can't seem to decide on the scope of my report.

Hello, how are you doing could you please help me with a question about my weather class, which is giving me a hard time the question is Why there is more moisture over a desert than over the poles? our professor just told us that the reason wasn't because the atmosphere can "hold" more moisture at higher temperatures (which exist over the desert) than the colder temperatures found over the polar regions. thank you.

Hey folks, I'm currently looking into the viability of collecting genetic materials. More so from a security, or marketing stand point rather then a genetic engineering standpoint. I'm sure someone here has done research on a similar topic and I was wondering if there was any paticular scientist or maybe an article on the subject you rather enjoyed or found informative. I'm not asking form movie or book titles, though they are welcome (as I do enjoy the occasional Sci-Fi read) but I'd like to try to keep it to scientific articles. Even one dealing with the morality would be nice. Thanks in advance for any help you can muster. EDIT: This is not business…

I found this excellent chart of modeled climate change attribution, also comparing the reconstructed temperature change to the instrumental record: I think this is a great chart for answering some of the most common questions about global warming, such as "Why did the global mean surface temperature level off mid-century then start increasing again?"

I have to design my own lab. How can I determine how long it takes for Amylase to digest starch in a sample of a cracker? If I test the sample for starch with iodine, will the black-purple color turn to another color once the Amylase digests the starch? Thanks.

Hi, i'm a grade 10 high school student and i just had my biology test today. Basicly, i'm kind-of worried as the test was sortoff (bullshit) xD. Some of the questions wasn't even in our review so i'm deeply worried. I remmeber some of the multiple choice questions and i want to know your opinions as to what the answer may be. 1. Could the spring runoff off fertilizers that contain nitrogen and phosphorus be: a)generally beneficial to the ecosystem b)help grow excessive algae I put answer A. 2. Which of the following biomes is best suitable to having trees losing leaves in the winter. a) tundra b)tropical rain forests c)deciduous forest d) all of the…

Editors of Wikipedia report that in general people who use condoms are 70% or 80% less likely to receive a given STD. I would like to know if any members of this scientific community can give me a better idea of the percentages involved with and without condom use in regard to STDs in order to work on a hypothesis of mine. My ultimate question is, what is the likelihood, probability, or chance for an average sexually active male, using a condom, to receive an STD from intercouse with another sexually average woman (or vice versa). Thank you for your time, shardsofnarsil

Ok first I want to pose a general question, and then following that if necessay I'll go into some detail about what caused me to come to this conclusion. (i'm a bit stretch for time at the moment) Okay it is known that the general person can see light with a wavelength between 400-700nm. Now somepeople can see down to 380nm. Now I wondering if illness (say cold/flue) could lessen this ability? I've heard that this effect exists on sound, so it is not a far shot. I'm assuming it narrows the range of frequences that are communicated form sensory organs to the brain. So is it possible that someone could see light of say 380nm when healthy, but when ill would have…

Hello, I am not familiar with anything to do with the numerous topics within the scientific field, and I hope I am in the correct topic area for this post? please let me know if it is not. I am an IT student carrying out a final year project, and as I worked for a pharma company last year I have decided to base my project on exposing IC50 data via a web service. I am having difficulty in getting to grips with the IC50 side of the problem and could really do with some help in understanding what it represents, what associated data is recorded and how results are obtained. some of these questions may seem really daft but as I said this is not my field so appologies in a…

I have a few questions that I found it difficult to answer. 1. What is the term use to describe the different shapes of E-coli and Micrococcus? 2. List down some safety precautions while using the high-power lens. For the first question, I write E-coli is worm like stucture while Micrococcus is wround in structure. I wonder if are there any special name given to this different so will need your help. The second question I understand better but I have limited points. I cant think of the danger and care for using high power lens or oil immersion len? are they? Eg. be careful not to allow other lens to touch the oil except oil immersion len.

Hey, I've been doing some research for my application to university about stem cells and I've struggled to find much about the actual procedures that are carried out on animals by veterinary surgeons. I know that there are techniques that are used on animals for injuries such as breaking tendons...a Anybody know anthing more? Also, do you think its ethically correct to start stem cell lines? Ollie

There's a lot of debate about whether or not viruses are alive, I know, which is why I chose it for my research paper. There still isn't a lot of good information out there, most is just personal opinion. I spent all evening in different libraries doing research but it seems most scientists havn't published much about it. There are good articles about the connections viruses have with living things (the development of the nucleus, etc), the history of viruses, and how they operate, but not much about whether they're alive. I guess my conclusion will be that even if viruses are not alive, they still share a vital connection with other living creatures.

Does anyone know why a person;s eyes appear to be sunken after a long illness? I've read that it has to do with dehydration but i need it to be more specific. I need to know what part of the eye causes it to look sunken. I thought, before reading into sunken eyes, that it had to do with the iris, but not sure anymore. If anyone can help me it be greatly appreciated. Oh also is it the frontal portion of the lens where suspensory ligmanets radiate?
