Now we have a group who would import lions and cheetas into the US to create "ecological diversity." How many of us think THAT is a good idea? The following is a cut and paste, as it was an article off AOL's welcome page: Group Wants to Bring African Animals to North America By JOSEPH B. VERRENGIA, AP DENVER (Aug. 17) - If a group of prominent ecologists have their way, lions and elephants could someday be roaming the Great Plains of North America. Scientists say African cheetahs could thrive on North American plains, where cheetahs roamed thousands of years ago. The idea of transplanting African wildlife to this continent is being greeted with …

When someone has completed a research project and written an article on it, how do they decide which journal to try and get it published in? Do they just try one journal, or do they apply to many of them? There are so many journals out there, many of which are about the same topics and have lots of content overlap. How does the whole process work??

In John Emsley's "Nature's Building Blocks: An A-Z Guide To The Elements," a book i've read over and over, i've noticed this paragraph: "The reason for gold's imperviousness to oxidation and corrosion lies in the remarkable grip it has over its outermoust electron, the one that is available for chemical bonding. It does this by virture of the large positive charge of the gold nucleus (+79) which exerts a gravitational effect on its electrons, causing them to move at a speed approaching the speed of light. This increases their mass, making them move closer to the nucleus." Is the gold nucleus the only one that has this property, or are there others?

I get bored easily. Any way I can extract gasses from the air or extract sizeable quantities of metal from ordinary sources? As far as I know, you can pass a magnet over fortified breakfast cereal and collect some fine grains of iron. It's not enough though.

when was fire discovered? is the impulse/ability to start fires to some degree evolutionarily ingrained, or was it learned after a certain amount of social order was achieved, and then passed on by teaching? just wondering.

They honestly need to set a restriction on the use of "scientifically proven!" by those outside scientific research. I'm sick and tired of hearing new "wonder cures" on the TV that have absolutely no scientific basis at all and are probably just sugar pills marketed to the morons. Also: - Germanium was "scientifically proven" to be a cure-all and prevent cancers and such by some crazy Japanese guy. Subsequently the FDA disproved it and even found it detrimental in large quantities in the body. - Jews were "scientificially proven" by the Nazis to be inferior and were subsequently murdered. - Nitrous oxide in tablet form is "scientifically proven" to somehow pro…

Is that true? Also that some nowadays humen have three nipples, where does the third nipple grow at if so? and is it itchy as two previous nipps?

this is part Humorous, but quite interesting. you`ve seen all the adverts for anti-aging cream full of chems etc... I`ve accidently discovered the opposite (seriously, I have!). we`re having a few friends around tonight and I`m cooking stuffed Squash. I hollowed out the beasty and removed all the seeds, washed my hands and thought nothing off it. about 5 mins later the palms of my hands are bone dry and all wrinkled and shiney! I did a test patch on my face (it cant hurt me as it`s 100% edible and organicly grown), I look like an old man now ) this will be great to use around Hallowe`en time, that and some talc powder as a dusting just another Cr…

An elementary school text book would quote something similar to: As clouds rise higher and higher, the air gets colder and colder. When the water vapor in the cloud becomes too heavy, it falls back to the ground as rain or snow. As you grow older, you may learn about the mechanisms and conditions in which water evaporates, and in which it condenses. Despite all that, I still can't answer the question, why does it rain. Let me explain more about my confusion. I am not discussing about the precipitation that occurs at the boundary between a warm and cold front. That mechanism is fairly clear as you have an abrupt change in atmospheric temperature, and suddenly …

I bought a small torch light bulb one hour ago as my old one was faulty after I connected it to a 15V battery. Now, it is quite different from my old one, not exactly the same in some manners. For the old one, it can endure a voltage of 2.4V and so does my new one. However, a label " 0.8A" was on the old one but "0.5A" is on the new one. What does it mean? I guess it probably is the ampere of current passing through the circuit with a voltage of 2.4V with the presence of this bulb. I guess so. By the way, I have no idea on which bulb can give a brighter light. I think the new one could be brighter as the resistance is higher, am I correct?

I read this book titled "Know it All" by Ed Zotti and I found this question. When a cereal says "fortified with iron", does that mean it has pieces of metal floating around in it. To my disbelief, it is true! The book says if "you were to run a powerful magnet through such cereal, tiny black specks will stick to the magnet." These are iron filings. Um...I bought this book from Kinokuniya, so I think it shouldn't be kidding. Is it true? The idea sounds really weird though.

The titanic sunk because there was a large gash which whent through 4 bulkeheads, and 3 was the max to stop the ship sinking. In hindsight, would it have been a better idea to not try and avoid the iceberg, and hit it head on so that only 1 bulkhead (the front) would have burst?
