I just finish playing Portal 2 and me and my friend have been arguing if its possible (in theory) to make a portal gun like in the game? I think it is possible to make it and he dose not he says "A portal gun is impossible to make since there is no way to connect the 2 portals" and I say to that statement "its possible to make one since they would be on the same wavelength" (maybe the wrong word for it) So my question is is it possible to make a portal gun in any way, shape or form?

Are the atoms in molecules locked in a fixed position so that the molecule has a constant shape? Or do the nuclei and electrons swarm around each other in patterned (or random) ways? edit: "atomic" in the thread title should be "atoms" - sorry.

I used to think that the temperature of water was 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Celsius, at normal atmospheric pressure, but it seems that the type of container and degassing of the water can considerably change the boiling point, sometimes up to 10 degrees Celsius. Any comments on this quote and subsequent video demonstrations? UC London Link to Experiments

  4. Other sciences – Forensics We've all seen them — photos of missing persons — and they are almost always well-coiffed, well-dressed, well-made-up, posed, smiling, happy photos. But are they the most realistic depictions to publicize given that the person is kidnapped, abused, injured, unhappy, and/or without cosmetics? Solving abductions before they become murders is more important than vanity. Why not publicize more "everyday" candid shots of missing people? What about profile or ¾ shots? How often do we actually see someone full on? If it's a child, what about a "from above" photo instead of a "same level" photo? What are the pros and cons of these variou…

With light we know that frequency varies along a linear spectrum that contains all colors. But what about flavor and/or scent? It would seem that these sensory data would be more multidimensional but what factors actually cause flavors and scents at the molecular/chemical level? Is there more to it than Ph-level? Are there actual chemical reactions involved to generate specific flavors and what is it exactly that is getting communicated to taste buds other than a certain level of electrostatic potential?

And how is it categorized. I used to think that science comes under either physics, biology or chemistry. However, you get these 'sub sciences' such as geology that combines physics and chemistry together? Then it goes further than that . Would you consider electrical engineering as physics or a separate science? I like things to be tidy it seems science is messy.

So based on a post I just read I'd like to know what you and your colleagues/friends/associates/stalking victims like to talk about. The statement in the post said that scientists prefer to talk about things they understand... now most of the physicists I know (and that's a fair few) prefer to talk about things they don't understand than things they do. So, what are your views, opinions and observations of this?

Hopefully you will experience the good ghosts and not the bad ghosts . Also , I don't know why this thread is in religion , when it could just as much be at home in theoretical physics .

Brought over from the nuclear reactor thread If you have a finite sum of money to spend, where do you spend it? Where will it do the most good? That's the question that has to be answered. It makes no sense to improve safety of something that has one death in a million if there is some other phenomenon that has one death per thousand. In the US, 33,000 people died in traffic accidents last year (the lowest in decades; the average over the last 40 years is around 40,000); The EU has a similar total, though I'm not sure what the worldwide tally is. So now you need to justify spending the money on making nuclear reactors incrementally safer vs making drivin…

Obviously history can never be a science in the sense in which natural sciences can claim that title. Even Kant at the end of the 18th century recognized that since the description of natural phenomena can be based on universal framework concepts of space and time, nature is much more readily characterized by general, 'scientific' laws than any social phenomena can be. But still, history claims to be more than just a jumble of anecdotes of past events, and instead seeks to explain phenomena in terms of general themes which have more explanatory value and general significance than mere stories about what happened in bygone days would have. Thus academic history opera…

Hey all, I've been thinking about this for a little while, and my searching around has brought me here. This seems like a great forum! If I were able to teleport, what would happen if I teleported to a higher elevation? For instance, I live near sea level (around 400 feet above sea level), what would happen if I teleported to a mountain at 10,000 feet? Would I experience the bends or something similar? On that matter, how quickly are you able to safely ascend to higher elevations?

Start with the origin http://pinktentacle.com/2006/02/aist-develops-3d-image-projector/ The link pretty much explains how it works. The problem with their way is that it requires light so intense that you ned strong sunglasses, and only allows for one colour and no brightness control. But what if you could use a controlled medium that emitted light at lower power, and did not need glasses? and what if that medium could produce different colours, depending on the colour of the laser? that's where this comes in: the box is filled with a transparent material that emits light where two lasers overlap the red boxes contain the lasers, that can emit different colours…

  18. Survey Participants needed: Invitation to my short survey at the University of Bremen. Hello, I'm looking urgently for English native speakers as participants in a survey that I developed at the University of Bremen. I am a student of cultural science and I need your kind help to finish my degree. Overall, the survey should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes and is quite enjoyable. The survey is a project of the University of Bremen and is used for scientific purposes only. It is completely anonymous. The data are evaluated only within this test and are not given to any third parties. If you are interested in further information, I can send you an …

I have been on train for 1 day. When I finally reached my destination and came to home, I felt a little shaky. When I sit quietly and try to read a book, it seems like I am still in train and I still get shakes and jerks. The shakes vanishes on the second day of return. Any explanation how we get such shakes?

Clenched Jaw could gain the Head autonomy from neck, A Center of Gravity of its own. Tensing it backward, forward, upward, downward subtly. My head feels a sold unit, moves with more purpose, will and in many angles. While commuting in the bus securely seated with eyes closed I see the buildings and trees rush backward. (Not actual things that are there but my memory of them seen sometime before) How does it happen? While at it (In the bus with eyes closed) I see fine strands of lines (like in the Optical Illusion Illustrations) close together Eddy,Undulate,Gyrate in a topological swirl. What are they? I feel fresh, I feel i am seeing something physical in my eye (One Eye or both the Eyes I don't know) I am posting all this with a view to obtaining feedback from people who are already doing it, and from experts to know it surely. So that i can do i…

Subject had a small breakfast and was commuting with closed eyes. Hyperglacemic daze swelled up inside his head. Normally it would have sneaked up on him, he could have yielded or shaken it off. Then while commuting he could see the surging dizziness in front, 'A cloud of unknowing'. He starred at it, The sleep swell. The rush he got from commuting fused with his focus, gave him energy to stare at the sleep daze. The daze, like a cloud, like a storm reared up, rushed away with a whoosh. Subject was clear-headed, refreshed, with a sense of achievement as though he won a battle with sleep. All because of commuting, over excited neural circuits - SMF was kind enou…
